The effects of Covid-19 are continuing to increase around the world as the pandemic claims millions of lives. Malaysia is no exception and has been remarkably affected by the pandemic. Apart from the number of people who are or have been infected with this virus, millions of people are directly or indirectly facing many challenges to their living. The challenges include increased cost of living, income reduction or losses, decreased purchasing power, and unemployment, along with other societal issues created by the pandemic. This study contextualised the implications of the pandemic on consumers’ burden in Malaysia, focusing on the cost of living and unemployment. Observations on prices, inflation, and unemployment rates were conducted to provide meaningful evidence. Major findings revealed that the cost of living has risen, contributed by the increase in prices, especially for food items, healthcare, and education. The unemployment rate also expanded due to the lockdown measures, which led to income losses and reduction. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought challenges to the consumers as measures taken to curb the pandemic have altered many aspects of life and increased the consumers’ burden. Although the inflation rate remains manageable, a major concern lies in many people’s income reduction or income losses. This study implies that the government, together with private institutions and NGOs, needs to work hand in hand to minimise the consumers’ financial burden, especially during this pandemic. It is hoped that the discussion presented in this paper would shed light on the impact of the pandemic on consumers’ burden in Malaysia.

In Jason Inch’s TED talk on Future Globalization is advising that companies need to understand their consumer base in a rapidly changing global business environment. It is clear for everybody that globalization plays one role in this change; however, there are a few variables that are forming the term of globalization, such as mass migration, geopolitical orientation, the Internet and its way of easing communication. Knowledge about cultural differences is a crucial thing and even more important than it was ever before. Therefore corporations are obliged to also take economic and political variables into account if they want to target t heir respective audience. Moreover, Inch says that companies should be ensured that cultural understanding needs to be trained as well as languages, knowledge about religion, values and “most importantly” about the culinary delights in a given country. Nowadays, it is about transcreating and not about translating when it comes to doing business on an international basis. “Transcreating” is important because of the fact that we are now living in an interconnected world where only translating would not be effective, you have to make things understandable for everybody. Inch also stipulates that cultural awareness is determining success or failure in today’s world. People should build bridges by having that kind of knowledge and not being afraid and run away be cause they have a lack in intercultural communication. In my opinion, Inch is right in what he is saying; everybody nowadays needs to have intercultural knowledge to drive business forward. It is not only a good asset to have intercultural knowledge; it is a necessity to have it.

This paper examines the impact of risk willingness and opportunity recognition on business owners’ performance in Sabah, Malaysia. The paper adopts non-probability sampling, known as a purposive sampling method, in selecting business owners. A total of 600 surveys using self-conducted questionnaires structured on a 7-point Likert scale is distributed, and subsequently, 525 questionnaires are returned. The EAO dimensions assessed in the paper are risk willingness and opportunity recognition. Data collected are analysed using the SEM-PLS technique through the SmartPLS 3.3.2 software. The study found a positive effect of risk willingness and opportunity recognition on the business owners’ performance. Accordingly, this paper’s theoretical and practical implication supports some of the previous findings and arguments that EAO plays an essential role in influencing micro-business owners’ performance.

Ex-offenders released from incarceration experience difficulties securing accommodation, finding stable work, and connecting with families. Although ex-offenders have numerous noteworthy problems, ensuring gainful employment has always been inferred as the most difficult challenge. Many offenders who attempt to acclimate themselves to the society demonstrated gaps in their work history, limited skill sets, and incomplete education. This study deploys the Theory of Planned Behaviour and literature reviews to conceptualise the factors that impact employers' intention to hire ex-offenders. Specifically paying attention to employers who are hiring and have hired ex-offenders to work in their companies or organisations, the study proposes a hiring intention research model.

This study was conducted to identify the influence between presenteeism and productivity among employees at selected government sectors in Putrajaya working under Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) and Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM). The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of presenteeism and to get a deeper understanding on one of the main factors of performance issues in the Malaysian government sectors which is the productivity among government servants. Productivity among employees is a critical factor in the success of a business operation since it reflects success and adds to the ability to compete with other businesses in the industry. It was found that three dimensions of presenteeism which were work-related demands, personal factors and organizational policies had significant positive relationships with productivity. It can be stated that presenteeism is linked significantly with the productivity loss among the employees in an organization. Presenteeism is a phenomenon in which employees come to work but are unable to perform the tasks that are assigned to them. In this context, there are many reasons that contribute to this circumstance which include mental, physical, and emotional environment as well as the pressure that employees receive through their work, personal factors, relationship with colleagues and emotional life issues. By resulting in a decrease in productivity, presenteeism contributes to economic costs. It refers to the self-rated measurable loss of work performance due to health problems. The result from this study reveals that personal factors of the employees had the greatest influence on productivity, followed by organization policies and work-related demands. A high level of presenteeism among employees in an organization is not only associated with the cost of lost productivity but also impacts the employees' health and life quality, increasing their medical costs. In a nutshell, personal factor is one of the many determinants that may have a major influence towards productivity among employees.

This paper investigates the factors governing the determination of budget deficit in Nigeria from 1981q1 through 2016q4. Our methodology is based on Johansen cointegration and Vector Error Correction model (VECM) approach. The result from the Johansen cointegration test suggests one cointegrating vector, which indicates the existence of a long run cointegrating relationship. Evidence from the long run and short run parameters suggest that exchange rate, interest rate and one year lag of budget deficit are the major determinants of budget deficit. Therefore, to achieve a realistic fiscal surplus, the government should determine a high level of accountability in its fiscal operations. In addition, any fiscal surplus should be channeled into productive investments to diversify the economy and reduce the likelihood of potential budget deficits.

Islamic unit trust is a sunrise industry in the Malaysian capital market over the last decades to fulfill the demand from its Muslim investors. Muslim investors are only willing to invest their capital if the investment does not conflict with their religious beliefs, namely Islam. Previously, most of the studies focused to evaluate the performance of unit trust funds relative to the market as a whole. Meanwhile, it is also important for investors to accurately measure their downside risk because it is closely related to their future losses. Thus, Value at Risk (VaR) concept was introduced to calculate monthly risk for an Islamic unit trust portfolio using the three standard approaches which are Delta Normal, Historical Simulation and Monte Carlo Simulation. Results show that Monte Carlo Simulation is the best method to quantify risk exposure as the average Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) is the lowest compared to the other two methods. The findings also highlight the importance of embedding risk into investment analyses and provide insights to investors who are considering Shariah-compliant equity funds as a potential income-generating instrument. Therefore, financial consultants or fund managers can make informed decisions in setting up a well-diversified unit trust fund’s portfolio for their Muslim investors by applying the concept of VaR and its methodologies.

This study was conducted using empirical data to examine objectives by adopting the perception of attendees towards sponsors. Three distinct forms based on Tomalieh (2016) which proposed the relationship between brand knowledge, event sponsor-fit and attitude towards events to purchase intention was adapted. How consumers experience an event can also have a powerful influence over their purchasing intention behavior. Outcome of this study concludes that attitude towards the event is the most important factor and has a much more significant relationship towards purchase intention when compared with other variables. This factor refers to how event attendees perceive an event sponsor. This study adds to the body of knowledge by providing new data and empirical insight on the relationship between event sponsorship factors and purchase intention specifically for the event industry in Malaysia. For future studies, it is recommended that comparative studies with other industries as well as other developing and developed economies be carried out.

This study examines the level of graduating students' inclination to venture into agribusiness. The study also tries to examine and measure the relationships between knowledge, attitude, social environment, and level of graduating students' inclination to venture into agribusiness. In this study, 158 students of Bachelor of Science Technology and Plantation Management (AT220) at UiTM Cawangan Melaka, Kampus Jasin, Melaka were selected as respondents from the population of Faculty of Plantation and Agrotechnology. This study used the quantitative method as the best way to address the issue of the new generation's intention towards the agribusiness sector in Malaysia. In the quantitative method, stratified and convenience sampling techniques were employed as a data collection method. The first finding indicated that the students had a high level of inclination to venture into agribusiness. The second findings reported that there were positive significant relationships between knowledge, attitude, social environment, and agribusiness intention. These findings provide insight to the government officials in the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries to resolve unemployment issues and achieve successful economic growth through the agriculture sector. The results obtained offer several key implications for increasing our understanding of factors related to students’ intention to venture into agribusiness. It may able to overcome the issue of the unemployment rate by creating more job opportunities for the new generations in Malaysia. Thus, universities play an important role in creating young agricultural entrepreneurs which is a crucial issue in this country. Implications and conclusions are also discussed.

The trend nowadays is that when consumers prefer convenient food compared to healthy food. Due to numerous health threats, the demands for health foods are increasing. This can be seen from the number of purchases of functional foods which have improved tremendously in the market. This study was conducted to examine the influence of perceived susceptibility, perceived benefits and cue to action on intention to consume functional food among senior citizen. The respondents were 250 conveniently selected senior citizen who are visiting shopping mall. Data were collected by using a selfadministered questionnaire. The findings revealed that one factor such as perceived benefit recorded a significant and positive influence on intention to consume functional food. On the other hand, perceived susceptibility and cue to action were deemed as not significant in influencing functional food consumption intention. Future study was also proposed.
