Jubilee, Anniversary or Maybe Birthday? – Lexicographic Examination Inspired by One Hundred Years of The Society of Friends of the Polish Language Summary One hundred years of the Society of Friends of the Polish Language became an inspiration for us to present a lexicographic history of words referring to this highly regarded event. The following lexemes have been examined: jubilee, anniversary and birthday. The analyses, carried out on the basis of their dictionary entries, indicate a number of different transformations on the semantic level.

The folk image of the world captured in the names of plants motivated by the place of occurrence (on the example of the Podhalan lexis) Summary The main purpose of this article is a description of the vision of the world of the rural community on the example of folk names of plants, which are associated with the place of occurrence of botanical species. The analysis has been developed on the names collected in the several villages located in Podhale region. Contemporary villagers discover the motivation of individual names according to beliefs, prejudices or general knowledge, specific to their community. Therefore the research tools of ethnolinguistics were used to analyse the statements of the oldest inhabitants. The recorded names of plants reflect the way in which language users are conceptualized. Moreover, they testify to the instrumental type of rationality and the bipolar way of evaluating the surrounding reality by language users.

Why samochód? An Excerpt from the History of Polish Automotive Vocabulary Summary The article discusses the history of the term samochód. It centres on the earliest period when the word was used in Polish language and on the advent of Polish automotive vocabulary at the turn of the twentieth century when the word competed with such synonyms as samojazd and automobil. The article lists the factors that could have helped solidify the contemporary meaning of the term. These include: familiarity, the earliest dating, and easy formation of derivatives as well as the influence of the automotive and general press.

Exponents of the “pact of fact” in the structure of the 18th century hand-written newspapers by Teodor Ostrowski: source incipits Summary In the second half of the 18th century, hand-written newspapers created an unofficial (alternative to printed newspapers) circulation of information. The article analyzes a collection of hand-written newspapers by Teodor Ostrowski from 1782, which were representative of the 18th century unofficial press discourse. The concept of the “pact of fact” was referred to and it was assumed that it was a conceptual framework in media-linguistic studies of texts whose press status must be determined and assessed. Measures were described which in Ostrowski’s hand-written newspapers fulfilled the terms of the pact of fact and indicated sources of information. Repeated lexemes and collocations were presented, the function of which was to refer to direct (spoken) sources from the country, from abroad and, to a lesser extent, to printed newspapers.

“I usually treat myself either too flatteringly or mix myself with the mud” – self-presentation strategies used by Czesław Miłosz in his letters to Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz Summary The article concerns the self-presentation strategies with which Czesław Miłosz built his image in his letters to Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. The tools of communicative psychology, sociology and pragmalinguistics were used for the analyses. The epistolographic material shows that Miłosz willingly used ingratiation, thanks to which he gained the favour of Iwaszkiewicz and his patronage. He juxtaposed compliments to the master with auto-invectives, he intertwined acts of self-depreciation with the images of narcissistic self-love. As a result, the correspondence shows a contradictory image of the future Nobel Prize winner, a self-portrait that evolves with age and experience. Fascinated by Iwaszkiewicz, full of complexes and selflessness, a novice writer, a sensitive and emotionally immature young man with narcissistic inclinations on the pages of his letters turns into a writer and faithful friend who is aware of his talent.

The picture of the human attitude towards the sacred in the songs (on the example of texts performed by polish-speaking children from Divine Heart Parish in Czech Cieszyn) Summary The subject of this article are texts of songs performed by children and young people in the Czech-Cieszyn Divine Heart Parish, or more precisely, the emerging image of the attitude that a person should adopt towards the sacred, his place in relation to holiness. The analysis of the texts showed that the texts most often evoke the inferiority, obedience and servility of man, then thanksgiving, gratitude for life and salvation, praise of God, especially through singing. Man should adore God, love, trust in him, hope in him and strive for the sacred. Man desires closeness to the sacred, he needs a Lord through whom he satisfies his needs. After all, he should also spread he faith.

The Concern for the Polish Language at the Moment of Breakthrough Summary The Society of Friends of the Polish Language was formed in May 1920, soon after Poland regained independence, at the initiative of Kazimierz Nitsch. The Society remains active till this day (the only hiatus in its activities was due to the Nazi occupation). The Society’s goal has been the popularization of knowledge about the Polish language. This goal is realized with the help of the publications in the Society’s journal “Język Polski”, with open lectures, as well as with advanced training courses for teachers. In the second part of the article, the author discusses the developmental tendencies of the Polish language after the political-economic breakthrough of 1989, exploring threats accompanying these tendencies. Five groups of problems are explored: a) the issues concerning grammatical and lexical systems, b) the problems of text construction, c) changes in the stylistic varieties (the expansion of common Polish), d) vulgarization, e) ideologization of language. In the last part of the article, the author discusses the activities the Society ought to undertake at the present moment. Articles on various language-related phenomena still ought to be published, and diverse papers and open lectures still ought to be organized, however, it is also vital to use the Internet to disseminate the knowledge about linguistic problems concerning the Polish language
