Exclusion and the excluded in contemporary Polish Summary The article concerns the functional evolution that the lexemes wykluczenie i wykluczony have undergone in Polish from the 19th century (the moment of structural borrowing from Russian) until today. As the authors show, these words, initially present in the general language (as indicated by lexicographic notations), began to appear in scientific texts at the end of the 20th century. In the Polish language of the 21st century, they supplemented the terminological resource, and then – as at least partially determinologized units – began to function in the public discourse. The appearance of new collocations with these lexemes (e.g. wykluczenie cyfrowe, wykluczenie komunikacyjne) confirms the widening of the scope of the disturbing phenomenon, which is social exclusion.

The language of witnesses to history. A report from Warmia Summary The author analizes characteristic features of language and style in stories about plebiscite in Warmia, Mazuria and Powiśle in 1920. Narrations are chronological and consistent. Stories are full of geographic names, historically important persons and situations. Narrators often use first personal singular or plural to highlight their identification with Poland. They also use words marked witch emotions. When they speak about events concerning other people they use third person plural and report style.

Receiver profile in prefaces from the 2nd half of 17th and 1st half XVIII century in chronological terms Summary The article presents an outline of the intended recipient of works from mature and late Baroque on the basis of research on 160 preface to works published in the years 1650–1750. The chronological order of the sources makes it possible to compare how the recipient’s attributes have changed over the course of this century. The characteristics of readers are associated with several thematic circles. In some periods, the intended recipient is very schematic, which results from the high degree of formality of the preface genre.

Siksa, drob, źlamdok, pędrok, węzowica – knowledge and understanding of dialect expressions for children among the youngest inhabitants of villages in Lesser Poland region Summary The article presents the results of a questionnaire carried out among the young generation, concerning their knowledge of differential dialect expressions known to the oldest inhabitants of the same area. The study was carried out in 2014 and comprised four eastern and four western local dialects of Lesser Poland region. The analyzed test group was asked about the following five expressive lexemes: drob, pędrok, siksa, węzowica, źlamdok. The youth claim to be familiar with the lexemes that are present both in dialectal and standard Polish language (although particular meanings may vary). What is more, the meanings attributed to standard Polish version are more widely known than their dialect equivalents. Among the participants of the questionnaire, it is foreign words that are the least known, or completely unknown elements of Polish standard version. By means of adideation process, these words are identified as already familiar lexemes that are part of the standard language version.

Port-3City, CyLet and PomorSolABil – chrematonimic derivatives with multi-word bases and development trends in modern word formation (on the material of the proposals sent to the competition for the name of the Pomeranian metropolitan ticket) Summary The article aims to demonstrate contemporary nominating tendencies in the field of chrematonimy. However, this is not a reflection on authentic names (functioning in public space), but an analysis of proposals sent to the competition for the name of one facility – a system of unified fees for public transport (commonly referred to as a metropolitan ticket). The competition was announced on the Internet in early 2019. Over 3,000 ticket name proposals were sent in . From this set, some names were selected for analysis – derivatives with multi-word basis. They are presented in groups distinguished due to the word-formation structure of names. The attention was paid to the wealth of techniques and creative possibilities inherent in the word-formation means selected by the authors of the names.

The dialectal word szkut ‘boy’ in colloquial Polish Summary The subject of the article is the occurrence of dialectism ‘male child; boy’ in colloquial Polish. This word – despite its dialectal origin – is present in the statements of not only the users of the local dialect, but also of people who do not speak the dialect. The example material was excerpted mainly from the statements of Internet users posted on Internet forums. It seems that the lexeme is slowly stabilizing in colloquial language to the extent limited to one region – south-eastern Lower Poland, and is becoming another micro-regionalism.

Emotional persuasion techniques used in culinary blogs Summary In this paper, we present emotional persuasive techniques that are most often used by wellknown authors of culinary blogs. In the introductory part, we refer to the beginnings of gastronomic literature and show the development of culinary-related genres, starting from ancient cookbooks to culinary blogs. In the following sections, we discuss the distinguishing features of culinary blogs, such as evaluation and emotionalization, as well as persuasive techniques to convince recipients to choose the right blog and recipe: likableness, credibility, creating a community. In the final part, we conclude that emotional marking and valorisation of reality are the features that distinguish culinary blogs from traditional genres related to gastronomy.

Semantic transformations in a selection of medical terms on the example of medical journals Summary Medical discourse and medical lexicon are virtually unexplored in the field of Polish linguistics. Hence, the aim of this article is to analyse medical terminology, with particular emphasis put on the methods of creating new terms, i.e. such terminology mechanisms that lead to the development and enrichment of the terminology in question. The study is based on a set of terms and their specific contexts drawn from two journals: “Medical Tribune” and “Medycyna po Dyplomie”. It presents a number of Polish medical terms that have undergone the process of meaning specialisation, focuses on the enormous role of nouns and prepositional phrases in semantic derivation, as well as reveals a word polysemy in medical terminology.

Syntagmatic connections in lexical networks on the example of the mother lexeme Summary The article presents two lexical networks, the first of which is an experimental lexical network, which was created as a result of a cyclically conducted test on a group of 900 participants. This network uses the human associative mechanism. The second network was built using the Word-to-Vector algorithm. The syntagmatic links describe the meaning of the lexeme well. The article describes how the two networks represent the meaning of the mother lexeme. This particular example shows well the differences between sets of words obtained in different ways, i.e. with the use of the human associative mechanism – an experimental lexical network and a well-built algorithm. The experimental lexical network contains rich emotional characteristics of the mother lexeme, i.e. syntagmatic connections, which is fundamentally different from the set of words generated for the mother lexeme by the W2Vec algorithm.

The Old Polish continuations of the Greek διάκονος. A case study from the Greek and Latin lexical borrowings in Old Polish Summary This paper is focused on the problem of several Old Polish words, which have a common etymon in Greek διάκονος. The discussed forms are different formally and semantically and they were borrowed via different borrowing channels. The paper contains detailed etymological analysis of the investigated words and some conclusions concerning the problem of investigating the Greek and Latin borrowings in Old Polish in general.
