The Concern for the Polish Language at the Moment of Breakthrough Summary The Society of Friends of the Polish Language was formed in May 1920, soon after Poland regained independence, at the initiative of Kazimierz Nitsch. The Society remains active till this day (the only hiatus in its activities was due to the Nazi occupation). The Society’s goal has been the popularization of knowledge about the Polish language. This goal is realized with the help of the publications in the Society’s journal “Język Polski”, with open lectures, as well as with advanced training courses for teachers. In the second part of the article, the author discusses the developmental tendencies of the Polish language after the political-economic breakthrough of 1989, exploring threats accompanying these tendencies. Five groups of problems are explored: a) the issues concerning grammatical and lexical systems, b) the problems of text construction, c) changes in the stylistic varieties (the expansion of common Polish), d) vulgarization, e) ideologization of language. In the last part of the article, the author discusses the activities the Society ought to undertake at the present moment. Articles on various language-related phenomena still ought to be published, and diverse papers and open lectures still ought to be organized, however, it is also vital to use the Internet to disseminate the knowledge about linguistic problems concerning the Polish language

Ways of implementing the news genre in “pieces of news” published in the “Monitor” in 1768 Summary The article concerns the linguistic shape of the journalistic genre of “piece of news”. The research refers to the texts published in the Enlightenment journal “Monitor”. The published “pieces of news” contain general information about the place, time and people connected with the described event. The description of events and people suggests a certain typicality. The lack of precision indicates that the main function of “pieces of news” is not informativeness. The linguistic shape of the statements, emphasizing the valuation, indicates their journalistic and opinion forming character.

The linguistic biography of Adam Mickiewicz and the problem of a monograph on his language Summary The academic level of the future monograph on the language and style of Mickiewicz will be largely dependent on utilising knowledge on the poet’s linguistic biography. I mean here the influence of domestic and regional language on the idiom of the author of “Pan Tadeusz”, his education and the impact of literary works on his linguistic development, knowledge of foreign languages, linguistic interests, and familiarity with Linde’s dictionary. The author recalls, reviews, and complements previous results of studies on Mickiewicz’s linguistic biography carried out by J. Trypućko and Z. Klemensiewicz.

Niemasz that is the phrase nie masz in the existential function as a problem of Old Polish text transcription Summary The present author while working on the final edition of Jan Kochanowski’s Dzieła wszystkie became interested in the problem of Old Polish transcription of the phrase nie masz and in its placement in word indexes. On the basis of Polish lexicons, dictionaries of Old Polish and Old Polish texts the author contrary to some editors’ practice who write niemasz or nie ma-ż concludes that the spelling nie masz is justified. Following the semantics of the quoted forms she shows that they are synonymous and follows a history of their occurrence in Polish. She also claims that despite the fact that in both forms the present tense expresses timelessness and they are generalized in the 2nd and 3rd person singular, formally they are predicates and they should be treated as other verbs in indexes.

Cracow’s commercial discourse from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century as a source of research on Cracow regionalisms Summary The aim of the article is to analyze the selected texts representing a commercial discourse used in Cracow at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. These texts are primarily the price lists of goods, kept in the resources of the Jagiellonian Library, the Museum of Cracow and the National Museum in Cracow. In the analysis of the collected materials, the Authors limit themselves to describing the regionally diverse culinary lexis (from the thematic field of sweets and desserts). They describe the lexical units that have been confirmed in the research as Cracow regionalisms (e.g. andruty ‘andruts’, makaroniki ‘macaroons’, precle ‘pretzels’). In addition, the authors verify the hypothesis about the regional character of the lexeme pomadka ‘soft candy / chocolate’.

Politeness and linguistic aggression in internet users’ comments Summary The presented considerations concern various forms of polite and aggressive linguistic behavior that collide in the comments of Internet users. Politeness manifests itself in various forms, following the patterns of traditional linguistic etiquette or modified by Internet users. Aggression is a form of verbal attack in which all linguistic means are used to discredit a given person. Both of these linguistic behaviors, especially in Internet comments,will change their faces and therefore it is worth observing and analyzing them.

From szacowanie to szacunek: semantic development of the word szacunek in light of lexicographical data Summary The proposed analysis of the word szacunek (‘esteem’) refers to the concept of cognitive science- oriented theory of text founded on the Lublin-based ethnolinguistic research. The aim of the analysis is to present the semantic development of the lexeme szacunek on the basis of system data gathered from dictionaries of the Polish language (general and etymological) and, for comparative purposes, dictionaries of the German language. The dictionaries record the word’s both objective (primary) and subjective (secondary) meanings which reveal szacunek to always be a result of an intellectual act of (o)szacowanie (‘estimation’) of somebody/ something. Lexicographical data therefore allow to situate theoretical considerations related to the semantics of the lexeme szacunek within the field of axiological research that invites the exploration of differences between valuation and evaluation. Maximizing closeness to the listener. The category of current language in the radio news Summary Post-modernistic informative models used in commercial media are becoming increasingly more informal. Therefore, there is a growing tendency in resorting to a more colloquial language. This has been proven not only by the non-formal accounts of the reporters but also by radio presenters’ verbalized speeches. Qualitative research of Radio ZET “Wiadomości” (eng. “The News”) (raging from 6th May 2019 until 2nd June 2019) enables us to reconstruct an informal view of the world portrayed in media, and determine particular areas in which colloquialisms are most often seen. They authenticate the message and make it more effortless. However, at the same time, they lead to stereotypization and superficiality. These seem to have an impact on the functions of informal language in media. Besides the well-known informative one, they contribute to the reduction of the distance between an addresser and an addressee, as well as increase entertainment value and persuasiveness.

Contribution to the prototype categorisation of offences. Selected aspects of cognitive analysis of the Polish legal language on the example of the Penal Code and the Code of Offences Summary The aim of the article is to establish a research hypothesis, according to which statutory definitions of crimes and offences are linguistic and mental categories, while assigning to them specific human actions and omissions is based on the separation of prototype copies, and moreover, it is subject to the phenomenon of the so-called “collection fuzziness”. The theses contained in the article will be verified in the course of further research on the structure of Polish jurisprudence, and perhaps – which would make it possible to emphasise the influence of culture on the categorisation of legal concepts and expressions – also foreign. Preliminary, theoretical analyses are based on a methodology derived from the cognitive linguistic current and may be of significant importance not only for linguistic research but also for the practice of justice in Poland and other countries conditioned by continental legal tradition.
