Knowledge of a foreign language is considered as a means of intercultural communicationand as a tool for learning about another culture and spreading own, which contributes to spiritual mutualenrichment. The article is based on the results of the analysis of works of Ukrainian scientists, devoted to theproblems of forming of English professionally oriented reading competence, as well as the development ofa system of tasks to increase the level of forming of this competence. Purpose. The purpose of the article isto design a system of exercises and tasks aimed at forming English professionally oriented reading competenceof prospective theologians. Methods. Review of research in Ukraine to analyze the typology of exercises forthe forming of English professionally oriented reading competence of prospective theologians. Results. It is notedthat the methodology of work of prospective theologians with professionally oriented texts involves pre-text,text and post-text stages. The concepts of “exercise” (organized repeated performance of certain operations, actions or activities in order to master foreign language skills and abilities, and for their improvement) and“system of exercises” (a set of necessary types, kinds and varieties of exercises performed in such a sequence andquantity that take into account the patterns of skills formation and skills development in different types of speechactivities in their interaction and provide the highest level of foreign language proficiency in given conditions) aredefined. The typology of exercises is described. Conclusion. Exercises for the forming of English professionallyoriented reading competence of prospected theologians at the pre-text and text stages, as well as communicativetasks for the forming of English professionally oriented competence in reading of prospected theologians atthe post-text stage are designed. The prospects of further scientific research is determined.

Teaching foreign languages and cultures as well as translation is to be regularlyimproved. Various educational technologies are used for this purpose, with one of them – edutainment – beingthe most efficient for the digital generation of learners. The purpose of this article is to describe the experienceof applying the edutainment technology as a modern technology for the formation of translation competenceamong students majoring in Philology/Translation during the “Theory and Practice of Translation” classes.Methods. The studies on teaching technologies, edutainment in particular, conducted abroad and in Ukraine havebeen reviewed. Results. This study has proved that teaching modern generation learners requires innovativeeducational approaches and technologies, such as interactive, gaming, project ones and others. Edutainmenttechnology helps decide the problem of students’ distracted attention combining the monotonous educationwith dynamic entertainment that motivates them to study and reach the desired results. Interactive nature ofedutainment involves all learners into the process, with both weaker and stronger students feeling their belongingto educational activities. Thus, educational and entertaining game ‘Jeopardy!’ (adaptation of the televisiongame show of the same name) was used as an edutainment technology to work with translation students andform their translation competence. This game facilitated the analysis of the text under consideration for its furthertranslation, prompted the learners to remember and use their knowledge on translation techniques and thecurrent topic, involved the students fully into the learning process, engaged and motivated them to activelyparticipate in the game to win it. Conclusion. To sum up, it was found that using the adapted ‘Jeopardy!’ gameas the edutainment technology during the “Theory and Practice of Translation” classes facilitates the processof forming translation competence components of future translators.

Abstract. Introduction. The school breakdown in spring 2020 made both teachers and learners all overthe world face new challenges: how to cope with distance learning (DL). It was not simple even in the welldeveloped countries. In Ukraine teachers tried to find different solutions. This period was a sudden but hugestep towards implementing ICT into the learning process. Purpose. The aim of the present study was to get aninsight into the way learners see distance learning, to hear their opinion and see their attidude to this form ofeducation, the difficulties and challenges they encountered during this period in the learning process in generaland in foreign language (FL) learning in particular. The focus was made on the learning habits, motivation, assessment, applications used, time spent on learning and stress students might have experienced. Methods. An online questionnaire containing closed-ended and open-ended questions was compiled and filled in bylearners of the upper grades of different schools. The data analysis was interpretive and statistical. Results. The material was sent mainly in the form of written text or video links and recordings via Messenger, emailor Google Classroom, very few online lessons were held. Most learners had difficulties; the most problematicarea in FL learning was grammar. Feedback and assessment were mainly in written form. The attitude tolearning was quite serious, learners developed their digital skills but some became demotivated. It was moretime-consuming, more difficult but less stressful and also less effective than face-to-face learning. Conclusion.Despite all the difficulties faced learners developed learner autonomy, digital skills and gained experience ina new form of learning that can be useful for them in their future studies as in the digital age DL is gainingground worldwide.

Abstract. Introduction. Successful professional communication of future bachelors in applied mechanicsrequires mastering lexical competence. Proper material selection is an essential prerequisite of the effectiveteaching and assessing process. In order to identify what lexicon needs to be taught and checked it is requiredto highlight the selection criteria. Purpose. To identify the unit of lexical material selection; to specify textselection criteria and select texts; to substantiate lexical items selection criteria and select terms that will formfuture bachelors’ in applied mechanics vocabulary. Methods. Thorough study of researches on lexical materialselection; selection and analysis of chosen authentic texts, selection, analysis and classification of terminologicalunits. Results. The research showed that future bachelors’ in applied mechanics vocabulary consists of generalEnglish lexicon and subject-specific vocabulary, i.e. terms. In teaching technical English it is relevant to focuson terminological units that need to be selected from specialism-related texts. Professional texts should beselected according to the criteria of authenticity, the professional value of texts, current relevance and novelty, interdisciplinarity, relation to topic, and terminological abundance. The selected texts are the source of terms that should be chosen following the criteria of relation to topic, frequency, professional and semantic value. The analysis of selected terminological units allows grouping them according to their types and structure.Conclusion. Thus, lexical material selection is a vital part in lexical competence teaching and assessment.Specialism-related texts chosen according to the abovementioned criteria are considered to be the source of futurebachelors’ in applied mechanics vocabulary and the context for test tasks. The selected terminological unitsare the basis of future experts’thesaurus that enables them to communicate effectively in professional situations.

Abstract. Introduction. The article provides an overview of scientific works devoted to the preparation ofprospective teachers of the German language in the process of their individual work. The works of linguodidactistsare analyzed, as well as their scientific contribution to the development and formation of prospective foreignlanguage teachers' intercultural communicative competence. The article presents the scientific works of Ukrainianmethodologists and linguodidactists and demonstrates the current state of the research that concerns the problemof intercultural communicative competence development of the prospective German language teachers inthe process of their individual work. Purpose. Consideration of existing scientific works that touch upon theintercultural competence of prospective German language teachers' development in the process of individualwork. Methods. Analyzed the work ofscientists on each aspect of the topic under study. The analysis of these worksmade it possible to assess the level of elaboration of the issue. Reviewing the scientific papers, dissertationsand articles to determine the importance of our scientific research. There are presented publications that revealthe specifics of teaching undergraduate students in the process of individual work. The necessity of scientificresearch for the intercultural competence of prospective German language teachers' development in theprocess of individual work is determined. Conclusions. The educational and methodological support of theeducational process of undergraduate students majoring in Philology is considered. The relevance of the developmentof a scientific approach to highlighting the specifics of training future teachers of the German language duringtheir individual work is indicated. The absence of scientific and theoretical substantiations was revealed in orderto develop prospective German language teachers' intercultural communicative competence in the process ofindividual work.
