Investigations were made on the temporal and spatial development of partial discharges (PD) in spherical voids (/spl oslash/: 1 -5 mm) in clear epoxy plastic. Two very different types of discharges were found with respect to charge image, luminosity and propagation time. The electrical signal simultaneously displayed on a 1 GHz real-time oscilloscope, showing pulses with rise times in the ns and sub-ns range of varying magnitude and shape. Pulse phase/height analyses were performed showing a uniques pattern for all voids. A relationship was established between the shape of the detected pulses, pulse phase/height analyses and optical characteristics of the discharge phenomena.

Good maintenance and life extension of electric power equipment has bec essential in a contemporary mode of industry operation. Insulation testing has t the prevalent tool in evaluating insulation condition and preparing corrective act for apparatus life extension. Moisture and other contaminates can resu deterioration of the equipment which may precipitate outages for large service a and may cost millions in lost revenues and damages. Excessive moisture cor of an oil-paper insulation system can atso accelerate loss of life[l]. The abilii identify the existence of a questionable mechanical or insulation conditioi increased water contamination is highly desirable, especially when such condii could lead to apparatus failures.

Fire-resistant hydrocarbon fluids have been used since 1975 in transformers where an extra margin of fire safety is needed. Although they are only one of several types of PCB substitute fluids available, their use has grown steadily, in part due to their safety record and biodegradability. Recent advances in refining and processing technology have greatly decreased the viscosity of these fluids. This study investigates the relationship between fluid viscosity and cooling efficiency with similar hydrocarbon fluids.

Eichorn's 1972 paper C13 was one of the first to that the presence of acetophenone contributed higher breakdown strength of XLPE compared to LDPE. More recently, Eager et. al. 123 show acetopheone could be used to rehabilitate ag cable insulation. In the past fifteeen or so yea other papers have reported the results of measu made to understand the effect of the presence by-products of the cross linking reaction, acetoF c w l alcohol, alpha methyl styrene and cumene dielectric strenbgth of XLPE. These include a nu apparently conflicting results. The previously papers claim that the presence of these compou benficial, however, the results of Mizukami et. a show that their presence decreases the impulse br strength.
