Based on a review of historical events, especially in the 20th and 21st centuries, which caused immeasurable displacements of human beings, this article proposes to analyse the «migrant writing» in the Hanoi novel, by Adriana Lisboa, bringing a reflection about exile, transculturality, memory, post-memory and melancholy, aspects present in heiresses of family traumas or exiled characters. Hanoi brings the complexity of these human transits, the implications originated from the deterritorialization and coexistence with other cultures, experiences that cause strangeness in the world’s apprehension. In this novel, the Vietnam refugees in the USA need to adapt to a new culture and language, both very different from their own.

This paper discusses the genre of the first part of the Narrative Compendium of the Pilgrim of America (1728), by Nuno Marques Pereira. Based on the evidence found in this eighteenth-century prose fiction work, it is proposed that it consists of a «pretended history», according to the conception of this genre of history that is outlined in the dialogue I of Court in the Village (1619), by Francisco Rodrigues Lobo. Having no intention of defining this genre (or species), this article presents considerations that aim to contribute to a critical reading of the Pilgrim of America appropriate to the Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian literate practices of the early 18th century.

Poet António Serrão de Crasto (1614-1685) was a member of the Academy of the Singular Ones (Academia dos Singulares) from 1628 to 1665, and penned two tomes of academic poetic works in 1665 and 1668. This article aims to briefly present the 72 poems contained in those academic publications, and two occasional speeches given as he presided over academic sessions. It also includes some separate poems found in handwritten form or in books authored by others. In this article, I seek to put forward a short bibliography of Serrão de Crasto by collating several bibliographical sources known to date. Generally, the rhetorical artifice present in the texts lies in switching around serious and jocular styles, as the poet shifts between the seriousness of the subject and the playfulness of the concepts, ornaments and words with which he treats the argument or, conversely, as he clothes a trivial or low subject with high ornaments. Most of his romances, sonnets and gloses feature this shifting between serious and facetious styles.

In this paper, we discuss how the «letrado» type, conceived as someone who has had access to a higher level of education, is handled by Gomes Eanes de Zurara in his chronicles, written in Portugal in the third quarter of the fifteenth century. We analyze the motives that lead the «letrados» to be praised or vituperated by Zurara. Finally, based on the Zurarian historiographic writing, we discuss the limits of assigning the term «letrado» to the chronicler himself.

Using as its background the celebration of the 450 years since the publication of The Lusiads by Luís Vaz de Camões and the several discourses which have originated in the media around those same celebrations, this paper aims at analysing the contribution of this work for the shaping and development of Orientalist discourse in Portugal. I begin by listing the terms that Camões used to refer to Africans, Middle Easterners and Indians and then I compare them with modern media representations of the same peoples. I conclude that, despite the temporal difference, modern representations are defined by continuity and similarity rather than by rupture and difference. In the final section, I try to assess the different memories regarding Camões and his work as well as the history of Portugal and of the African and Asian people in the contemporary world.

In this essay we intend to comment Graciliano Ramo’s «Pequena história da República», in a way to observe the satiric mode and the didactic character of this biography about Brazil. During the analysis, we have stablished dialogues between Ramos’s work and other manuals that have been produced along 20th century in Brazil.

The paper analyzes the conditions of the Santa Barbara childbirth ward, at the Royal Hospital of S. José, based on the understanding of Alfredo da Costa, a professor at the Lisbon Medical-Surgical School, an obstetrician at this hospital and the director of this maternity. Both the opening lessons of the Medical-Surgical School Obstetrics Course in 1899 and 1900, as well as the report delivered in 1906 to the Lisbon Medical-Surgical School Council, denounce the deficient conditions of the space and the lack of essential materials indispensable to the proper functioning of the ward, as well as the poor physical state of the parturients.

The purpose of this reflection is to find out how José Saramago (1922-2010) uses parody for the development of his narrative, both regarding the clear and effective deconstruction of the biblical text and the maintenance of certain elements found in the canonical accounts for later subversion. This last characteristic of the parody is hardly taken into account in the various critical readings on the construction of the fictional discourse in O evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo (1991), since clearly the «deconstructive» parody, with the full subversion of biblical texts, can already be seen at a first reading of the narrative.

Along the nineteenth century, almost all manuals concerning to the Brazilian History helped to build, disseminate and sediment a positive and modernizing image of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, overestimating the «hits» and reducing the «excesses» practiced by the minister of the King D. José I. In this article, we analyze how Pombal’s controversial figure was incorporated into the official historiography of Brazilian nation, based on ideological assumptions agreed upon by the founding partners of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Brasil, under Emperor D. Pedro II protection and patronage. The validation of Conde de Oeiras, especially in didactic materials, obeyed a teleological conception of History, a method that persists in twentieth and twenty-first centuries’ historiography.
