Saramago's work was masterful in evoking and/or provoking the past and its crystallized discourses, with The Gospel According to Jesus Christ (1991) being a notable example. In this article, I propose to revisit this Saramago’s novel in order to argue that the work in question mobilizes a profanation of biblical figures at the lexical level. More specifically, and in the light of the Agambenian concept of profanation (2007), I argue that the narrator and the characters, through their lexical choices, set in motion a process of restoring certain words to a use that until then was denied to them not only by the weaving of the canonical gospels as well as by the historically constructed readings of these same texts, which, ultimately, contributes to a profanation of biblical figures.

Within Aluísio Azevedo’s literary production, O coruja (The Owl) occupies a distinctive place. This is not a work corresponding to the consecrated features of serial novel genre. First published in the footnotes of the newspaper O Paiz in Rio de Janeiro, between June and October 1885, O coruja caught the readers' attention through its protagonist and his tragic destiny’s exceptional character. In it lies an implicit and fierce criticism of the negligence by the authorities of the time with regard to the Brazilian people’s education at the end of the Second Empire. With a published volume in 1887, this novel remained little known, having never reached the popularity of works such as O mulato (The Mulatto) or O cortiço (The Slum). This article seeks to shed light on the novel’s importance for the debate over the necessary educational reform in Brazil, a topic that raised a great stir between 1883-1884. It is a heated denunciation of a system that favoured (and still favours in the 21st century) a small minority, which is represented in the novel by the antithetical figure of Teobaldo: a corrupt and opportunist, the perfect paradigm of the Brazilian ruling class.

This article aims to demonstrate that in Os homens dos pés redondos Antônio Torres used innovative aesthetic strategies to build a biting and daring portrait of the dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar in Portugal. The novel represents an avant-garde fictional work which offers an implicit denunciation of the dictatorship installed in Brazil with the 1964 military coup. Renewing the tradition of national engaged literature, it describes the authoritarianism, censorship and violence of the dictatorial regimes in both countries.

«Relação da missão da serra da Ibiapaba» is a text by Father Antônio Vieira from 1660th. After some frustrated missions to the region, Vieira decides to write the report as a way to collect resources for the Ignatians and, above all, obtain a favorable position from the Portuguese Crown. It is intended to analyze the rhetorical preceptives of «Relação» and its belonging to the demonstrative (or ecfrasic), deliberative and judicial genres, from classic authors such as Aristotle, Plato and Quintiliano. If, on the one hand, the text does not shy away from showing the hardness of the obstacles faced by missionaries, on the other hand, Ibiapaba is configured as a locus amoenus, in horaceous terms. The text's descriptive capacity (evidentia) shows a series of historical, geographic and ethnographic elements that allow the understanding of the temporal and spiritual action of the Society of Jesus in Portuguese America, in full Counter-Reform. The mission to Ibiapaba intends to allegorize, narratively, Ignatian conquests in Brazilian lands. More than that, «Relação» is based on the Society of Jesus’s providential theological-political thinking, with the inscription of the future in the events narrated. In addition to the classic authors mentioned above, the article is based on studies on the rhetorical genres of Rodolpho (2014), Santos (2018 and 2019), Guedes (2014), Pernot (2000) and within the scope of the allegorization and providentialism of Society of Jesus, Lima (2009), Hansen (1993 and 2017), Sartorelli (2011) and Luz (2018).

The article resumes and analyzes some figurations of the 1755 earthquake, paying attention to conventions related to the locus horrendus or horrendous place. Furthermore, it seeks to demonstrate that the dramatic effects of narratives must be apprehended from the linguistic codes and theological-political topics mobilized by the scholars of the 18th and 19th centuries, and not from aestheticizing, psychological or idealistic categories that assume the centrality of the taste as a paradigm of the arts.

This work analyzes Antes do passado. O silêncio que vem do Araguaia (2012) by Liniane Haag Brum, an account of the author’s search for traces of the life of Cilon Cunha Brum, her uncle and godfather, PC do B’s militant from the 60’s until his disappearance in the jungle in the 70’s. Liniane and Cilon, for different reasons, are victims of State violence, which justifies the reading of Antes do passado in the light of reflections on testimonial literature. Like many texts of this type, the report is made up of fragments and silences, but also, until almost the end, it is strongly marked by fears and mistrust among those who lived with Cilon and the narrator-protagonist; she doesn’t even seem interested in their stories of suffering. The work’s hypothesis is that Haag Brum’s text can be read as a «training novel»: a protagonist narrator who looks for a family member, who is not interested in listening to witnesses when the focus of the speech deviates from its objective and which, in the end, is transformed; not only her but also, to some extent, her writing.
