The importance of the plural work of Jorge de Sena (1919-1978) in the field of Portuguese literary criticism. His intense work of critique dedicated to Portuguese-Brazilian cultural, political and literary relations, based on the life experience in the two countries connected by the same language. The concept of culture defined by a threefold requirement: methodical doubt, analytical judgment, synthetic vision along with a method of analysis that consisted of a penetrating interpretive dialectics.

Based on a more comprehensive study dedicated to presenting the concept of the SEA in Portuguese and Croatian phraseology, in this work we focus on the aspect pointing to the conceptualization of the SEA as Other Space (otherness, «non-self»). The analysis of the semantic-conceptual structure of phraseological units (idioms and proverbs with figurative meaning) with constituents from the sea semantic sphere revealed that the motivation of the subgroup’s idiomatic meaning is based on some kind of «cultural» or «secondary» experience (and not physical-perceptive) of space, implying a considerable influence of «folk theories», which in principle are subjective. In this case the SEA, at the conceptual level, represents a space that, in relation to the subject, is «exterior», alien, unnatural, inadequate, where the subject «does not exist». We propose to identify the most relevant metaphorical structures for such conceptualisation, as well as the specific mappings that motivate meanings of units in our corpus.

The article focuses on four poems by Gregorio de Matos (1636-1695) dominated by the topic of menstruation. After the contextualization of the theme from an anthropological point of view, we study the unusual way that the topic assumes in the texts of the Bahian poet, highlighting in particular the imagery variations performed by the author, in a register in which the obscene is attenuated by humor.

In the wake of Les fleurs du mal, the fin de siècle literature incorporates into the ethos of eroticism a demonic vision of divinity confrontation. The work of António Patrício is on the boundary between the presence of God and the confrontation with God, which is the other possible side of seduction. In D. João e a máscara, this confrontation with divinity is revealed in the close relation that exists between death and eroticism. Aspiring to eternity is a way of craving for the divine. Paradoxically, if the desire to be like God is the desire to attain the absolute, on the human scale one can only secure this through death: «Nothing can we call our own but death».

This article attempts to clarify the thesis by St. Thomas Aquinas, according to which it is possible to prove that the existence of God can be demonstrated. On the basis of the analyses in Summa Theologica I, q.2 and Summa contra gentiles I (I-XV), there is an attempt to understand the meaning and relevance of this thesis, its implications and its philosophical and theological significance. Thomas Aquinas’ analyses underline the importance of distinguishing between a knowledge about the existence of God and one regarding his essence, while highlighting in each case a set of difficulties and lack of knowledge factors. In a context where the idea of confusion plays a central role, Thomas Aquinas tries to show that: a) no matter how confused knowledge about God is and no matter how large the disproportion between the human and divine perspectives, there is an ineradicable notitia Dei, and b) this notice is linked at the same time to the inability to know God’s essenceand the ability to demonstrate His existenceby means of certain effects and traces of His. This all leads to the peculiar demonstration of the existence of a Deus absconditus. It is precisely the discovery of this God who manifests himself and at the same time hides himself that makes it possible to document the pos-sibility of demonstrating that God exists and that constitutes the foundations on which every and any demonstration of the existence of God rests.

Both A queda dum anjo (Camilo Castelo Branco) and Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma (Lima Barreto) update the figure of Quixote. In this article, we try to enumerate the defining aspects of the quixotism of the protagonists, in a first moment, and the satirical reach of this quixotism; and then to emphasize what distinguishes Calisto and Polycarp, drawing conclusions from this distinction.

The aim of the present article, based on the comparative method, is to analyse the topic of the double in the work of two authors belonging to literatures that, at first sight, seem to have little in common. The first is Mário de Sá-Carneiro (1890-1916), Portuguese writer and poet, and the second is Richard Weiner (1884-1937), Czech writer, poet and dramatist. The two authors lived in the same period of modernism, in Paris, being influenced by the same artistic and literary sources. In fact, there are some identical, typical modernist proceedings and issues in the work of the two authors (especially, the subjectivism and the identity/alterity problem). In this essay, the common double theme is analysed in the short-stories «Eu-próprio o Outro» (1915) by Sá-Carneiro and «Dvojníci (1916) by Weiner.

This paper aims to explain the reception of literatures in Portuguese language in the Serbian cultural space. Firstly, I will study the relations between Portugal and Serbia from historical and diplomatic perspectives, and afterwards I will focus on the teaching of the Portuguese language and culture in the former Yugoslavia, highlighting the translation activity in the process of approaching the Lusophone and Slavic worlds, namely Serbian world. One of the topics to be analyzed are the stereotypes about Portugal in Serbia, before and after contact with literature, concluding that the path of cultural cooperation in the Iberian and Slavic languages — is open, but always with new perspectives to explore.
