This contribution uses a phenomenological and psychoanalytic framework to rethink the porous boundaries between being and likeness . I move from a Surrealist advertising pamphlet produced in 1919 to the facial surgery techniques of 2018, contextualizing theories of the dyadic relationship between text and reader (Iser) with practices of image-solicitation and digital intimacy on the Internet. In unpacking self-surveillance techniques and state-run biometric technologies, this paper examines how our use of faces informs the ways our faces are used against us. Through analyzing how the performance of fantasy and the realization of authorship are imbricated through images of humankind, I research new developments in Augmented Reality avatars, linking the language of the face (Levinas) as a staging ground for potential empathy and conversely, systematic exclusion. In tracing the data double while looking at the biopolitical function of social media, this paper considers how our images of humankind fix our embodied nature while fixing others in place.

Defined as the “twilight zone of the 21st century” (Cirucci and Vaker, 2018) Black Mirror, the British anthology science fiction tv series created by Charlie Brooker, has reached the status of a sort of philosophical classic that echoes the angst of an era. Through an in-depth analysis of the volume I riflessi di Black Mirror. Glossario su immaginari, culture e media della societa digitale (The Reflections of Black Mirror. A glossary of imaginaries, culture and media in the digital society) edited by Mario Tirino and Antonio Tramontana (2018), the paper sets out to investigate how the semantic nuclei of Black Mirror may be analysed in terms of a glossary confronting the existential conditions of modern technological civilization and the tuly radical challenges we face.

On 4 May 1949, all the players of the top Italian team of the time, Il Grande Torino, died in an air crash. The tragedy of Superga seemed to be representative of Italy in the immediate post-war period and for this reason it managed to connect with almost the entire nation. The images of the carcass of the plane at the base of Turin’s basilica evoked the war images broadcast by the newsreels between 1940 and 1945. The Torino players were heroes and as heroes were celebrated at their funeral, which seemed to indirectly refer to the cult of the fallen in fascist culture. The funeral held in Turin was attended by 500,000 people and managed to unite a large part of the population in a public rite, during which not only did the deaths of the Grande Torino appear to be celebrated, but also those who had died in the Second World War. Public funerals such as those of the Grande Torino gave Italians the opportunity to openly vent intimate emotions linked to personal experience, helping to build the new nationalCatholicpost-war community.

Sport, understood as a social phenomenon and object of research, brings together the efforts of the most diverse fields of academic knowledge production. In the present paper, we propose a cartographic study of the images that are present in the biographical narratives of four Brazilian Olympic athletes, exploring their interconnections, subtleness and ambiguities. We defend that the study of the images of the nocturnal heroes, normally placed in the background by media processes, can act as important amplifier for the understanding of the complexities that constitutes the social imaginary of the sport phenomenon. Our argument is that, in their trajectories, these athletes manifest solar, lunar and “in between” hero experiences. The theoretical framework connects three previous studies: the research on the theme of the nocturnal hero; Rubio’s investigation on “Brazilian Olympic Heroes”; and the cartographic method for the investigation on the processes of image and imaginaries’ creation proposed by Leao.

The article discusses the relationship between national narratives and sport, incorporating the cases of women's hockey and rugby in Argentina (which allows to debate the gender problematic), as well as the transformations produced in the role of the State as producer of the patriotic narrative in the contemporary neo-populisms. But, postulating the centrality of the sports hero in these narratives, it analyzes the passage from Maradona to Messi: from the “kid” to the “good boy”.

In recent years, in a symptomatic manner, peculiar practices are spreading. As David Le Breton brilliantly explains, in the « physical and sporting activities at risk » the individual - often in the presence of a wild nature - becomes heroically the only sovereign of his existence by means of a bet on his abilities, engaging a challenge that, at the limit, puts life at stake. The possibility of finding death in the challenge ensures - in the positive performance - an intensification of the biographical meanings (Le Breton, 2002). According to Le Breton line of thinking we can affirm that individual, becoming the hero of his own existence, fights the anxiety of a world lived as hostile, indifferent and meaningless. Analyzing this particular phenomenon, in an investigation that takes into account the sociological reasons of its indicative success, is the aim of this article.

The original label of “sport for the disabled” is currently facing a transition. From the idea of “minor competition” to its gradual affirmation as an independent sport reality, even a way to support social activism and, on closer inspection, a privileged instrument to deconstruction the social stigma of disability. It has been analyzed the current media attention on disability and the narrative ways used to talk about it, in the light of the inevitable mutual interaction between social imaginary and mass-culture representation. Disability has been converted into a myth since the Paralympic champions have become popular not only for their sports results, but also because of their life stories and thanks to the cultural and advertising industries. The social imaginary migrates from the pietism and social invisibility of the stigma to the celebration of the “extra-ordinariness” of the Paralympic myth. However, these heroes will soon end up being locked up in a new cage of sense .

The article analyzes the narrative of the brazilian newspaper O Globo about mediatic construction of the heroine image of the judo brazilian athlete Rafaela Silva. Many journalistic examples were searched with nominal athlete’s citations published in sports editions in 2012 (London Games) and in 2016 (Rio Games). Based on hero theory concept, it has been verified that the athlete was presented as a character that goes through the stages of the journey proposed by Campbell (1995). The conclusion of Helal, Cabo and Marques (2009), confirmed by Amaro (2014), ratifies a specific vocabulary used by sports press about the Olympic medalists. This is valuable to show her route. Textual references such as "overcoming” and "dedication", associated with Rafaela’s life, also allow us to identify repeated characteristics that prove how the Olympic heroes imaginary are treated by specialized media that helps the consumption of the megaevent.

In sixties Roland Barthes shows that sport’s event composed little mythologies. With the postmodernity images of sports collide with fan’s skin. In a sport’s universe redifined by transmedia storytelling, the ethnographic documentuary is proclamed as a new style of reporting athlete’s life. Since 1998 and the film “Les Yeux dans les bleus” inside France football players realized by Stephane Meunier and the TV Canal +, this kind of intimacy film has increase a lot. Technology and uses of image renewed sport mythology. We can see it on movie in fictionnnal flashback (Pele, Niky Lauda, Howard Winstone), in publicity with peopleized sportsmen (Beckham, Riner, Bolt) or with the new generation of high level athletes with social media and show TV (Iverson, Shields). This way of shivering uses in sports treatment is a sign of a skin turn wich embodied myths.

The sports genre has historically been the most present in the world of videogames, since the first experiments like "Tennis for two", probably because simulating a gaming activity with already known boundaries is easier to understand (Bogost, 2013. Conway, 2010). Since ancient times, myth was the favorite creative place to elaborate individual or collective human passions. Even in videogames, the introduction of mythical protagonists makes the game boasts a charm that allows players to experience, with strong emotional involvement, the game interactivity. This article aims to discuss how football simulations use avatars of legendary players, from the present and the past, to support a certain ideal of sports culture and celebrity.
