Electromagnetic energy can penetrate incompletely shielded enclosures through the action of three different coupling mechanisms. Two of these mechanisms, diffusion through the thickness of the shield and magnetic field coupling through imperfec tions in the shield, can be combined and represented as a Transfer Impedance which relates the magnetic field at the outer surface of the enclosure to the resulting electric field induced along the inner surface.

New engineering techniques currently are being applied to solve medical/biological problems associated with developing methodologies for the long-term cryopreservation and subsequent thawing of deeply-frozen human kidneys. This paper deals with the recent ad vances achieved in the use of electromagnetic (EM) energy to thaw cryogenically-preserved canine kidneys— which are similar in size to human kidneys. One of the keys to successful cryopreservation of cells, tissues, and organs is the ability to efficiently thaw the bio logical material without damage. Accurate control of the rate and uniformity of the thawing process in addition to knowledge of the effects of any cryoprotective agents employed during freezing are require ments for success. Investigations at Georgia Tech have shown that the illumination patterns and power level of the electromagnetic radiation must be carefully con trolled to obtain rapid, uniform thawing. An accurate knowledge of the electrical properties of the material as functions of both temperature and cryoprotectant level is required to exercise appropriate control on the radiation.

Ten thousand vehicles were measured at each test frequency, 50 MHz and 153 MHz, using land mobile receivers with a NADME unit (Noise Amplitude Distri bution Measurement Equipment) which was used to indicate peak noise levels. A standard dipole was positioned three meters above the ground and ten meters from a single lane exit ramp. Except for the ignition noise created by the vehicles on the exit ramp, the measurement site was quiet.

Malfunctioning of electronic home-entertainment equipment in the presence of strong rf fields is of growing concern to the con sumer, the government, and the various radio services involved. Even though the amateur service represents a small fraction of the total number of transmitting installations spread throughout the nation, the increasing frequency of EMI complaints is posing a threat to its continued growth and existence. Be cause of the seriousness of the problem, the American Radio Relay League has accentuated its efforts to find a solution. A general survey of the EMI situation has been under taken and susceptibility tests performed where applicable. This paper deals with the results and conclusions of those efforts undertaken at League headquarters in New ington, Connecticut.

This paper presents a survey of improved measurement techniques, instrumentation, and data presentation for accurate, meaningful evaluation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of electronic systems and sub systems. These techniques and instrumentation were developed as alternatives to conventional, MIL-STD461/462, measurements which recommend screen room testing with conventional antennas. These alterna tives are used to accurately measure and quantify EM emissions from electronic equipment and/or for estab lishing standardized EM susceptibility test fields. Dramatic improvement (worst case errors of 1 to 3 dB compared with 40 dB from conventional screen room measurements) have been demonstrated. The techniques described in the paper include: 1) low-Q or under ground enclosures, 2) mode stirred, shielded enclo sures, 3) specially designed, shielded, transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cells, 4) broadband field probes capable of measuring complex average or peak fields without causing perturbation, and 5) time and ampli tude statistics for characterizing the measured data.

During the past 40 years, the automobile industry has taken the lead in initiating and pursuing programs to measure and control electromagnetic interference from vehicles and has sought to assure compatibility of vehicles with other equipment. It has a long and successful history of cooperation in the development and use of standards relating to control of radio frequency emissions. Although the earliest efforts by the industry were aimed at protecting onboard entertainment radios, protection of other communications services has since been given primary consideration as the need for such protection was identified. This presentation will trace the history of the development of the SAE standard for measurement of electromagnetic radiation from motor vehicles from its inception, treating the need for each revision and method of acquiring the data necessary for accomplishing revision. The greatest emphasis will be placed on the latest and most extensive revision of the standard, copies of which will be available at the meeting. The report also will update the status of the SAE measurement procedure in the world community and its relationship to measurement procedures specified by other standards writing groups. Also treated in this presentation will be goals for the future of the standard, one of which is to make it a more internationally acceptable standard.
