Formal journalism education in Ukraine has been criticized for quite a long time for still being affected by the old Soviet theory-based teaching model, rather than adhering to internationally accepted best practices. The system of teaching students at journalism departments has not changed significantly since Ukrainian independence in 1991 and many Ukrainian journalists have entered the profession with largely inadequate training. For instance, the practice of on-the-job training has been implemented only by some journalism departments, or is partly implemented by some lecturers. On the other hand, graduates of journalism programs in Ukraine say that more practical trainings help their professional growth. This article, then, aims to explicate the advantages and disadvantages that exist in Ukrainian journalism education, and it seeks to reveal whether Ukrainian journalists prefer formal or non-formal education for their profession. The findings are based on an analysis of 10 focus groups conducted with a total of 92 Ukrainian journalists (both with and without journalism degrees) and nine indepth interviews with Ukrainian lecturers and Ukrainian media representatives.

Angesichts der nationalkonservativen Fluchtlings- und Migrationspolitik der ungarischen Regierung, die von immer scharferer Rhetorik begleitet wird, untersucht dieser Artikel, inwiefern die Regierungskommunikation bereits bekannte Interpretationsmuster zu Flucht und Migration reproduziert. Die Muster werden aus bestehenden Forschungen zu Medien- und Policy-Diskursen abgeleitet und unter Ruckgriff auf die Framing-Theorie nach Entman in vier zentrale Frames zu Flucht und Migration ‚ubersetzt’: Securitization-Frame, Deservingness-Frame, Politik-Frame sowie Humanitarian-Frame. Einem qualitativen Ansatz folgend werden Pressemitteilungen der ungarischen Regierung auf diese Frames hin untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass besonders die ersten drei, auf negative Aspekte von Flucht und Migration fokussierenden Frames stark vertreten sind, wahrend der Frame mit Schwerpunkt auf humanitare Hilfe kaum zum Tragen kommt.

A partir de una breve introduccion al asunto de la diversidad cultural, se presentan algunos de los principales temas de discusion y preocupacion en la agenda latinoamericana, con respecto al papel o, mas bien, papeles, que juegan las industrias culturales, especialmente los llamados medios audiovisuales, en los procesos sociales, culturales, politicos y economicos en el subcontinente, marcados por una dialectica entre la diversidad y la concentracion. Los datos empiricos no son exhaustivos, sino principalmente ejemplificantes. Hay un sesgo hacia los medios audiovisuales debido a los campos de investigacion del autor. No se pretende ningun grado de exhaustividad. Palabras clave: Diversidad cultural, industrias culturales, medios audiovisuales.

In this paper I argue that audience ethnography needs to be repositioned as a fieldwork-based, long-term practice of data collection and analysis. This practice allows researchers to attain a greater level of understanding of the community studied while maintaining self-reflexivity and respect towards those one is attempting to understand within the everyday life of the community. Relying on my work in rural communities in Brazil over the last decade I discuss some of the ways in which ethnography, as a long-term, in-depth practice, can benefit our understanding of the reception dynamic as well as provide insights otherwise impossible to attain. I will propose a model for audience ethnography, which I term media engagement, to discuss how the process of ethnography functions to apprehend the complex dynamic that evolves between consumers and cultural products.
