This article assesses the dominant debates about the agency in media narratives for community-based peacebuilding. By locating the common challenges facing the agency in media narratives for the purposes of community-based peacebuilding, the article contributes to the ongoing debates on ways in which media discourses can be tailored toward the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts between, within and among communities. This is predicated on the assumption that conflict is a function of discourse, and that media narratives take active part in the construction, negotiation, and circulation of discourse, all of which inform the degree of congruity between news content and expected outcomes. The primary objective of this article is therefore to generate conceptual and theoretical debates on the agentic and formative roles media narratives play in community-based peacebuilding.

The article examines how nuclear risk was perceived by German and Japanese journalists covering the Fukushima Disaster. Drawing from the theoretical framework of Beck’s World Risk Society, the journalists’ personal risk perceptions are reconstructed from narrative interviews, adding an important variable to the understanding of journalistic communication on risk and disaster. The results indicate that German correspondents in Japan were highly concerned about their personal safety while Japanese journalists hardly showed any anxiety with regard to the nuclear disaster. The varying perceptions also widely applied to the journalists’ professional experience of the disaster, although further influences like organizational culture came into play as well. The article concludes that historically shaped discourses are an important macro factor for media reporting on risk and disaster.

This research focuses on a Twitter protest about the Ayotzinapa case (the disappearance of 43 students in Mexico in 2014) that for years has existed under the hashtag #PaseDeLista1al43. The main purpose is to assess if this protest can be understood as a counterpublic. Through thematic analyses of tweets and 15 semi-structured interviews, the study found the following: Protesters deconstruct power relations within the case and challenge the government’s version about the students; seek to disrupt mainstream narratives with their messages; and developed a collective identity that helped maintain the protest alive for years. These findings point to the possibility of Twitter to house a long-lasting public that challenges dominant political narratives. A public that came together with a hashtag can go beyond short connective actions on Twitter and develop a community to discuss and solidify opinions, and then get attention from other publics.

Abstract The Public Media Service has been studied mainly from a historical perspective (e.g Lewis, 1993; Thompson, 1998) or from a Western-European point of view (e.g Bustamante, 2000, 2001, 2008; Hallin and Mancini, 2004; Tremblay, G. 1988). But few authors have intended to elaborate a Public Media Service concept based on the sociopolitical reality of Latin America (p. e.g Fuenzalida, V. 2000, 2002; Ortega, P. 2007). These examples have stepped away from systematically analyzing programming, to focus on how radio professionals (writers, reporters, researchers, editors, presenters, etc.) have shaped radio stations out of their ordinary work. Therefore, this paper proposes an explanation of a methodological strategy developed to formulate a concept of Public Radio Service in diverse sociopolitical contexts. This work is part of a broader study on the construction of a public broadcasting system in Mexico; it seeks to add to the theoretical and methodological reflection on the transformation of Public Radio Service in Mexico.

Having as theoretical basis the notion of the public sphere and its manifestations within the EU, the current paper seeks to trace similarities and differences in the public discourse developed in German and Greek news sites, regarding the financial and refugee crises. Our quantitative content analysis shows that there are both similarities and differences in the two distinct public spheres, regarding the evaluation of the EU, its policies on the aforementioned issues and the ways in which the public discourse is being articulated mainly on behalf of politicians and journalists, who appear to be the main carriers of the public discourse in the media under scrutiny.

Media Monitoring Africa (hereafter MMA), is a Johannesburg-based non-governmental organization (NGO) with the goals to increase media quality, refocus media ethics, foster media diversity, and advance media democracy. Via an institutional ethnography, conducted during six weeks of fieldwork, I take up MMA’s particular case to investigate how the NGO has become understood as “part” of the South African mediascape, rather than an auxiliary agent. Through participant observation of the NGO’s daily routines, in-depth interviews with MMA members and local media professionals, as well as textual analysis of organizational documents, I found that MMA has managed to weave into the organizational fabric of the South African mediascape. The ethnographic data reveals that MMA is commonly perceived as a necessary element of the South African mediascape—a status that moves beyond the often strictly interventionist role of activist NGOs. I argue that MMA has achieved this unique social position in the mediascape through four central organizational-activist practices: 1. consistent intervention on the same sets of issues; 2. activist innovation around the mode of their intervention(s); 3. multilateral activism (political economy, media policy, media content); and 4. successful curation of relationships with media stakeholders.
