Starting from the assumption that inclusivity is no longer bound to the concept of need , this article explores the theme of accessibility in the educational context for students with visual disabilities. Since they impact on children’s modes of perception, communication, socialization, access and processing of knowledge, sensory disabilities pose a major challenge to the rethinking of language, time, and space of didactic actions. Despite all that, as a human right, inclusion has been at the core of a variety of studies in the field of didactics, which, in line with the paradigm of Universal Design (UD), have promoted the idea that an inclusive educational environment must be designed with accessibility in mind. This article offers an overview of the process of designing inclusive educational contexts, both inside and outside the classroom.

In the 1980s, the renewed interest of linguists in deafness and sign language revealed the emergence of a remarkable resilience within the Deaf community. Deaf people expressed the need to be recognized as social actors and possible precursors of a new way of seeing the world, which was the consequence of their unique, natural, visual-gestural language: sign language. This change in research and attitude resulted in a new way of looking at and understanding deafness, which could no longer be seen as a physical deficit to be treated medically. Consequently, sign language interpreters had to change their entire perspective on translation and shift from an approach that saw the interpreter as a helper working for the Deaf, to one that represented the interpreter as a bilingual professional bridging two cultures. This new perspective overturned the meaning of accessibility, which nowadays focuses on the cultural richness that the Deaf community can bring to society: the so-called Deaf Gain .

Starting from a definition of deaf cinema as an artistic product created by and with deaf people, Francesca Di Meo (Istituto Statale Sordi, Rome) describes the fascinating reality of Cinedeaf Festival, the biggest archive of deaf cinema in Europe. All films are subtitled in Italian and English and all live events are translated into Italian Sign Language, International Sign Language and subtitled live. Di Meo also highlights the socio-cultural importance of this festival in terms of audience development and public engagement.

Traduzione audiovisiva e accessibilità. Riflessioni a partire da alcuni conflitti epistemici in ambito formativo

Over the past few years, the question of accessibility has become a central driver in Audiovisual Translation and, through this area, has spread into the field of Translation Studies. However, the ways in which accessibility is discussed and framed within Audiovisual Translation are not neutral. Following a short introduction to threshold concepts theory, the results of an investigation on threshold concepts conducted with a group of postgraduate Audiovisual Translation students are discussed. I then elaborate on some of their replies, which highlight a series of epistemic conflicts. I discuss how those conflicts may be related to the different ways that accessibility is introduced and discussed in AVT education. In the conclusion, I briefly discuss how such conflicts are connected to different ways of interpreting the claim that (audiovisual) translation is accessibility , and I argue in favour of a weak interpretation of said claim.

Respeaking is commonly used to subtitle live TV programmes for the benefit of deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers (SDH subtitles): it is based on the interaction between the respeaker's competences and a speech recognition software trained to recognise his/her voice. In some countries this technique is also used to subtitle live events, such as conferences, debates, and so on. In recent years there have been attempts to use the interlingual variant of the technique, thus making it possible to translate a speech from one language to another (as you do in simultaneous interpreting) and obtain real-time subtitles. The respeaker listens to the incoming message and interprets it simultaneously to the software, adding punctuation verbally by means of voice commands; then, the respeaker's audio input is processed by the software, which produces the transcript; the respeakerchecks the output and corrects any errors, and the subtitles are finally made available to the audience. After a short overview of the experimental research carried out in this field and the available theoretical models, the present paper assesses the accuracy of the interlingual subtitles (English into Italian) produced via IRSP in a live event (a symposium). The analysis outlines the specific difficulties of this technique when applied to a live event, with the aim of producing useful data and suggestions for the development of practice guidelines.

This article offers an overview of the current situation of sign language interpreters operating in Italy, with reference to the wider European context. Although the profession is not yet formally recognized in Italy, it has gained more and more visibility in recent years thanks to TV broadcasting. However, the characteristics and working fields of sign language interpreters are still largely unknown to non-professionals. This article starts with a description of the main working language used by interpreters, namely Italian Sign Language (LIS), and of its main users (Deaf people), who can be considered a socio-cultural community. Then, the article provides an overview of the historical evolution of interpreters, focusing on training options and professional contexts. Particular emphasis is given to the current legislation concerning sign language interpreters at the national and international levels, with a focus on the national associations of interpreters.
