The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown has negatively impacted various aspects of university students’ lives which often leads to higher levels of stress. The current research aims to investigate the role of social support in pandemic-related stress among this population. A total of 121 university students in West Sumatra was recruited through convenience sampling to complete the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Pandemic-Related Perceived Stress Scale. The results showed that perceived social support had a significant role in reducing pandemic-related stress by 10.8% in which perceived support from friends was a better predictor than other sources of support. In addition, this study reported a significant difference in pandemic-related stress based on the income of parents where students from lower-income families had a higher prevalence of stress. The findings of this study propose that providing social support particularly from peers would hinder the perceived stress level of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic affects one’s physical and mental state. Past studies reported higher levels of anxiety, distress, and depression, especially among emerging adults, indicating the need of studying how COVID-19 affects one mentally. Hence, this study looked to investigate the predictive effect of perceived risk, fear of COVID-19, and resilience on mental health among Malaysian emerging adults. 182 emerging adults were recruited in the cross-sectional study through an online survey using the purposive sampling method. Results showed that resilience significantly and positively predicted mental health while perceived risk and fear of COVID-19 were insignificant predictors of mental health. Overall, practitioners and policymakers are encouraged to focus on resilience-based interventions to improve our emerging adults' mental health. This is because emerging adults with strong mental health can serve as a strong impetus for national development.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has been affecting the Malaysian psychological well-being, particularly among emerging adults. They have been found to have higher vulnerability during the transitional life change. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the mediating effects of resilience and coping strategies (i.e., task-oriented coping, emotion-oriented coping, avoidance-oriented coping) on perceived threat of COVID-19 and subjective well-being (SWB) among Malaysian emerging adults. A cross-sectional online survey study was conducted for recruiting 162 participants. They were emerging adults aged between 18 to 25 years old (M = 22.51). The finding revealed that only task-oriented coping mediates the association between perceived threat of COVID-19 and SWB.  However, the other hypotheses were not supported. This significant finding has widened the literature perspective of COVID-19 in the local context. Task-oriented coping is crucial to be cultivated among emerging adults for reducing the impact of the stressful situation, contributing to better psychological health.

Adjustment is a process that includes mental and behavioral responses to achieve balance in meeting needs in accordance with environmental demands. However, it was found that students had difficulty adjusting, such as being unprepared to live in a dormitory, having difficulty being away from their parents, violating the dormitory rules, having difficulty getting along, and having intercultural disputes. This is thought to be related to differences in schools, cultural backgrounds and grade levels. This research aims to analyze the adjustment of students in the dormitory based on the type of school, cultural background, and grade level. This research method used is ex post facto with a factorial analysis design. The population was 200 students in the dormitory of Al-Faruqi Kampar, Riau. This research uses a self-adjustment instrument with Alpha Cronbach of 0.876. The data were analyzed using the technique Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that the level of adjustment of students based on the type of school was in the high category and there were significant differences in the adjustment of students based on the type of school, the level of adjustment of students based on the cultural background was high category and there was no significant difference in the adjustment of students based on cultural background. The level of adjustment based on grade level high category and there is no significant difference in adjustment based on grade level, and there is no interaction between these variables in explaining the adjustment of students in the dormitory. The implications of the results of this research can be used as a reference for counselors in schools for the preparation of guidance and counseling service programs to improve student adjustment in dormitories.

We aimed to investigate the somatic distress and psychological symptoms levels of cancer patients, and analyze the influencing factors on somatic distress during COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study included 216 eligible cancer patients. The Patient Health Questionnaire-15, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist for DSM-5, The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21, the Brief Resilience Scale, the Stressful Life Events List due to Pandemic were administered to the participants. The moderate to severe somatic distress rate was % 38 and probable PTSD rate was 20.4%. Depression, anxiety and stress symptoms were 36.1%, 49.1% and 45.4%, respectively, from mild to extremely severe. There were substantial association between somatic symptoms severity and high PTSD, anxiety, depression, and stress symptoms levels. Low education, high anxiety levels, high experience stressful life events, and low psychological resilience predicted high somatic distress. This study demonstrates the high risk of somatic distress, PTSD, depression, anxiety and stress in patients with cancer during the pandemic. In addition, somatic distress may indicate high levels of psychological symptoms, high experience stressful life events, and low psychological resilience. It underscores the need to assess psychological status during the pandemic, especially those with high level somatic symptoms.
