The key events of the city of Magadan founding are considered. The theoretical base research is the history of everyday life and the concept of гplace developmentд. The activities of organizations and personalities associated with the emergence of the first settlement on the shore of Nagaevskaya Bay are traced. The political motives for the creation and liquidation of local structures (East Evensk (Nagaeva) Culture Base, Ola-Seimchan District, Okhotsk-Evensk National District) are revealed. The activities of the Dalstroy Trust aimed in the development of the urban infrastructure are described. In fact, Magadan acquired an urban appearance no later than in the mid-1930s. However, the city status was officially recognized came only in 1939, which was a consequence of the political struggle for control over the Okhotsk-Kolyma region. The author comes to the conclusion that the act of granting Magadan the city status was an clement of the political will, not the result of natural development. The most legitimate starting point for the foundation of Magadan is the "first hammered peg" at its current location.

The article discusses the method for obtaining thin section microphotographs using an Android smartphone, with further processing of them in the PETRO program. The paper outlines the principle of working with the software written in the Python programming language. When conducting petrographic studies with the use of a microscope, the PETRO program permits to properly catalog the resulting photographs and to save time on additional processing (setting the scale, applying masks, etc.). In addition to taking photos of thin sections with a smartphone, it is possible to upload photos directly from a computer disk.

The article comprehensively describes host rocks and ores of the Srednekanskaya Dike gold deposit. Ore formation was found to include several stages: metamorphogenic, hydrothermal-metasomatic (productive), and hypergenic. Characteristic features of gold mineralization have been revealed. The bulk of the gold is confined to vein quartz (1); gold fills interstitia in quartz, arsenopyrite, and pyrite (2); in quartz veins and quartz-carbonate-feldspar breccias, localized in microdiorites, gold is deposited in arsenopyrite and pyrite, and associated with diorite-porphyry - only in arsenopyrite (3); the decisive role in the formation of gold mineralization is played by structural control expressed by brecciation and hydrothermal metasomatosis of rocks and by resulting gold sedimentation in weakened zones (4).

Diatoms from three sections of siliceous organogenic deposits in the Southern Primorye, that reflect the high productivity of diatoms in the Miocene and Pliocene, were studied. Monodominant floras with Aulacoseira praegranulata var. praeislandica f. praeislandica in the Middle Miocene (western shore of Lake Khanka) and Pliocene (near the village of Terekhovka) deposits, as well as those with Staurosira venter in Late Pliocene (upper flow of the Sergeyevka River) have been exposed. This high productivity of diatoms might have been caused by the development of the dense lake-river system in the south of Primorye; the long vegetation season under the conditions of a monsoon climate with its mild winter, formed by that time; active volcanism with eruption products that were the source of substances necessary for the diatom valve formation.

Urbanization is considered as part of the transformation process of the global, national, and regional systems. The author has conducted a comparative analysis of the quantitative characteristics of urbanization in the Russian North (including the Far North-East) as well as in foreign countries (territories) of the North. The article shows that, over the past 30 years, the level of urbanization in both Russia as a whole and its northern territories has been growing very slowly on the background of the population decline, while the urbanization in the foreign countries of the North is actively continuing on the background of the population growth. The analysis of urbanization processes has revealed that the main quantitative characteristics of RussiaТs Far North-East are similar to those of Northern Canada and Alaska. Therefore, it is logical to conclude that the experience of transforming the regional economic systems in these countries should be applied for the further successful development of Magadan Oblast and Chukotka.

The author describes сyclicism in population fluctuations and variability of demographic indicators of populations. The relationship of population density with external and intrapopulation factors is analyzed. The results of the study have been compared with similar data from other parts of the area.

Loss of the ACTN3 gene activity due to a stop codon at the rs1815739 locus (rs1815739-T or 577X allele) leads to the absence of α-actinin-3 in fast-twitch muscle fibers, which contributes to increased endurance and resistance to cold. These circumstances explain the observed increase in the frequency of the rs1815739-Tallele in Eurasian and American populations compared to that of Africa. However, the frequency of the rs1815739-T allele in the modern indigenous populations of Siberia is higher in the south than in the north of this region. In this study, the analysis of the frequency distribution of the rs1815739-T variant in ancient Siberians based on published paleogenomic data showed that the occurrence of this genetic variant was higher in ancient times compared to modern ones, especially in northeastern Siberia. It is suggested that one of the possible reasons for the frequency decrease of the ACTN3 gene rs1815739-T variant is the intensive admixture over the last centuries between the indigenous population of the Far North and the immigrant groups.

The authors present the results of a study on the vascular plants in the archipelago swamp ecosystems, which surpass a quarter (28.5 %) of the Shantar Archipelago flora. The article contains a list of swamp plants including 171 species from 106 genera and 44 families. The expose core of the swamp flora comprises most of the species (82.5 %). The spectrum of of the swamp partial flora leading families reflects its East Asian character in the conditions of the Pacific islands (Cyperaceae, Ericaceae, Ranunculaceae, Poaceae, Asteraceae, Rosaceae).

The nucleotide sequences of the mtDNA cytb and COI genes of the chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta (Walbaum) from the rivers of the Sea of Okhotsk northern coast (Yama - donor, Kulkuty - artificially created population) have been determined. Polymorphism of the studied molecular markers has been noted. Unique haplotypes occurring only in one of the studied populations were found. The genetic distance calculated between the Yama and Kulkuty chum salmon populations indicates the absence of statistically significant differences between them. Nevertheless, the genetic diversity in a sample from an artificially created population tends to increase comparing to indicators characterizing the donor population. This may be associated with the formation peculiarities of the Kulkuty chum salmon genetic structure. Besides, the influence of the straying, amounted to 4 %, cannot be excluded. Apparently, haplotypes introduced as a result of inter-population exchange are successfully maintained through artificial reproduction. This has caused some change in the gene pool of the artificial population compared to the donor one.

The geological characteristic of the Golden Ridge, one of the oldest gold-bearing areas in the North-East, is presented. The important role of the Early Cretaceous metamorphism and the associated granitoid plutonism controlling the orogenic gold mineralization and the placer gold content, which is typical for the granite-metamorphic domes of Chukotka, is demonstrated. The area prospects for the Late Cretaceous copper-molybdenum-porphyry mineralization are characterized. The potential of ore and placer gold in the area discussed is assessed.
