In this paper, we propose a method for realizing transfer functions containing variable parameter, by the state-space method. By using this method, variable transfer functions (VTF) can be often realized with a minimal dimension. In case that a minimal realization can not be obtained, the realization dimension can be fairly reduced.

This paper focuses in particular on the lateral electrostatic force characteristic of an electrostatic levitation system as part of the overall system dynamics. The lateral force exerted on a levitated aluminum disk, used in hard disk applications, originating from a relative translation of the disk with respect to the stator electrode, is analytically studied. Experimental results are presented in order to assess and verify the validity of the analytical solution for the electrostatic forces.

Conditions for target observability with angle-only measurements are derived for several target models: stationary target, constant-velocity target, and constant acceleration target. The effects of proportional navigation on target observability are then analyzed. The analysis results show that target observability is dependent on the choice of target model and guidance gain and can be significantly degraded for certain guidance gains.

A strong correlation is believed to exist between the burr shape and friction welded joint performance. The possibility of evaluating welded joint performance from burr shape, which is a non-destructive inspection method, will lead to its application in evaluating joint performance. Thus, in this study burr shape data is fed into an image processing equipment and a precise measurement of the various burr features is performed. The following conclusions were derived from the joint performance experiment: for A5056 aluminum alloy friction welded joints, a clear line could not be drawn between perfect and imperfect welding solely from the tensile test of the welded joint. Thus, the discriminant analysis of whether the weld is perfect or imperfect using variables such as height of burr groove, width of burr, burr height and sectional area of burr only gave a 90% of right answers.

This study is aimed to develop a method of reliable automatic decision making for washing the polluted insulators in substations near coastal areas based on the actual data of the human decision making, the pollution deposits and the weather information. The automatic decision making is based on discriminant analysis by using the multi-dimensional normal distribution. Effectiveness of the proposed method is assessed by applying it to actual data of substations.

Integral-type optimal servosystems based on the application of the continuous or discrete time optimal regulator theory are analyzed from viewpoints of the norms of complementary sensitivity, and the sensitivity and disturbance functions. The analyses are performed on cases with and without feedforward control laws. Furthermore, the influences and the characteristics of the feedforward control laws which minimize the quadratic performance indices are examined.

Multiprocessor multitask scheduling is very important in running FMS and is usually one of combinatorial optimization problem which are NP complete. This paper intend to develop an optimization scheme based on colored Petri net model and Hopfield neural network algorithm. At first, the FMS scheduling problem is analyzed and a colored Petri net model for FMS scheduling system is presented. Then, by introducing a special energy function, Hopfield neural network which is suitable to solve the scheduling problem is presented. Finally, the simulation result is discussed.

A new type of mechanism featuring "direct electrostatic levitation and propulsion" (DELP) has been successfully developed. It can directly levitate and drive an object by using electrostatic force. A 3.5 inch diameter aluminum hard disk media has been suspended and transported without any mechanical contact. In this paper a brief review of the basic principle of the direct electrostatic levitation and propulsion is presented, followed by a description of the structure of the prototype DELP mechanism, including electrode design, position feedback control method for levitation, driving principle and the operational procedure. Experimental results which confirm the completely contactless levitation and propulsion are also presented.

This paper deals with the adaptive control of a one-link flexible robot manipulator. ARMA model is used as a prediction and estimation model. The parameter estimation part estimates ARMA model's coefficients using the recursive least-squares algorithm and generates the predicted output. Forgetting factor is introduced to achieve an efficient estimation.

Recently, a lot of research on robotic manipulators with different actuators has been conducted, but manipulators incorporated with air cylinders mounted on air actuators have not been discussed in depth. Presently, the electric driven actuator is widely used, however it has a serious drawback of being incapable of providing sufficient power. Whereas, the air actuator by contrast readily yields power; the air actuator finds the most extensive application in air cylinders. Unlike hydraulic cylinders, the controllability of air cylinders is very difficult. Hence, a computer was used to ease the controllability of the piston cylinder thrust and piston rod stroke. For this purpose, a simple a cylinder was constructed experimentally with an aim to putting it into practical use.
