In higher education, the improving learning strategies are a widely studied topic also considered a matter of concern to the teaching community. For that reason, the teaching team belonging to the Information Security subject applies the SEEQ questionnaire during the 2012–13 academic year. The SEEQ questionnaire has an extensive use trajectory in order to analyse the effectiveness of teaching. In the present contribution, we analyse both the results obtained from the SEEQ questionnaire and the effects from the inclusion of Digital Storytelling within the development of the ECTS activity during last year with respect to the previous year, in which it had not been applied.

The Educational Data Mining allows to identify and cluster students by certain characteristics that are specified through the needs and problems raised by the teachers and course coordinators. In this context, this research aims to apply data mining techniques for the identification of profiles and participation patterns of students in a course of higher distance course resulting in the prediction of the chances of each student's approval. The result was the identification of 4 clusters that designate the profiles and types of participation of the students, namely: active, medium, inconstant and absent.

This paper aims to demonstrate the potential of using the socio-constructivism approach and Information and Communication Technologies (ITC) to engage elementary school children in STEM learning. This study is based on a group of elementary school children, who have had the opportunity to learn scientific concepts through the use of prototypes, the construction of games including the themes in question and the inclusion of ITC. Data analysis, after participant observation and semi-structured interviews, leads to the conclusion that this is an efficient method to engage children in STEM-based learning activities.

The present research aims to measure the relationship of economic and financial profitability with the use of business accounting software. For this purpose, a sample of 146 Ecuadorian SMEs was used in 2015. The H-test of Kruskal Wallis was applied and it was determined that there were no differences between companies in the case of financial profitability and economic profitability. Companies that use accounting software, both tax and administrative, do not show differences in economic or financial profitability with respect to companies that do not use it. It can be evidence that Ecuadorian SMEs do not consider accounting computer systems as an influential factors in a better profitability, being important to consider, on the one hand, the slow development and implementation of ICTs in the Ecuadorian business sector and on the other, the process Adapting and addressing the major challenges that SMEs are currently facing.

This paper presents an approach to proceed with semantic annotation in historical documents from the 19th century that discuss the constitution of the mother language, the Portuguese Language in Brazil. The objective is to generate a group of semantically annotated documents in agreement with a domain ontology. To provide this domain ontology, the Linguistic Instrument Ontology was employed, and it supported the process of automatic semantic annotation. The results obtained with the annotation were analyzed in comparison with the Gold Standard and they presented an elevated level of coincidence, between 0.86 and 1.00 for the F1-score measure. Besides that, it was possible to locate new documents about the discussed domain in a sample of the Revistas Brazileiras. These results prove the efficacy of the approach of automatic semantic annotation.

Brazilian public software projects are based on the principles and characteristics of free and open source software projects such as security, collaborative development models, technological independence, audibility, and free licenses. In this work, we try to understand the difficulty to start to contribute with a Brazilian public software via its development process and rules for this kind of projects. This paper aims to verify the barriers already proposed in the literature and investigates specific barriers in the context of Brazilian public software projects. For that, we performed a research with Brazilian public software communities and we elaborate a new model of barriers to contribute with Brazilian public software projects.

In recent years, we have seen the appearance of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) allowing to spread knowledge on a large scale. These courses create learning opportunities, but also challenges in their design and implementation. This work presents a case study of the design of MOOCs in the health area, more specifically in the training on chronic pain. Principles and design methodologies are applied to create appropriate learning contexts. Additional tools are also used in order to, in addition to complementing the available contents, attenuate, in the development of competences, the differences resulting from the profiles of the students involved. The applied principles of design and tools guarantee both the success in the transmission of the contents and the involvement of the students thus preventing high drop-out rates that are normally recorded.

The media convergence has generated a new discourse between the media and its readers. At present, the channels for disseminating the information are linked to external platforms, such as social networks. Newspapers have gradually turned a certain type of content to their social media pages. Because of this, virtual dialogue channels are opened due to the immediacy of the flow of information. In the present investigation the Facebook accounts of three major newspapers of the Andean countries were studied. The objective was to measure their degree of interactivity with the readers. The type of information shared by the media, the number of daily updates, the multimedia material used, and the media response to user comments are part of the analyzed indicators. In general terms, the findings show that the consumption of news in social networks is given as a menu, depending mainly on the liking of netizens, and also the participation of the media in the debate generated by the publications shared by Facebook. However, the social network is an important channel when it comes to massaging information without being able to insert itself into a real communication process.

Web-based computing makes calculations available to any user just by means of a browser, i. e., without installing any software in the user's computer, which thus does not need any especially high computing power or specific operating system. As a mere illustration, an Engineering problem in pneumatic transport is addressed, to determine the minimum transport velocity, as needed in some industries. This determination is made available to any user through a web-based executable program made by the authors that computes the velocity, following common theory. This study is an instance of computing over the Web, a way of computing that employs exactly the same executable programs as classical computing, these being typically the hard task in most Engineering and other problems. This type of computing, with the corresponding tailored executables, can be used to solve innumerable other problems. This web-based technique also facilitates cooperative work, given the current ease of worldwide communication. We find it to be a comparatively little explored field of the Web.

Evolution of cancer treatment requires reconfiguration and optimization of the health care infrastructure and investment in new services. To address this problem, it is necessary to make significant changes in the health infrastructure and creating a informatics system consisting of electronic medical records. The data of this study comes from surfing and learning ABI/Inform Global (ProQuest) papers on this topic, and Russian statistical reports of cancer services. The paper considers the main indicators to measure the efficacy of cancer treatment and how to take a system of measures aimed at improving the cancer treatment. Also there is designed the information support scheme of cancer services.
