Levels of stress and engagement work of Social Workers in Portugal. This article intended to know stress and engagement work levels that social workers in Portugal were exposed to. A survey was answered by 1369 professionals. Perceived Stress Scale and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale were used in the construction of the questionnaire. The results point to a median level of work stress and engagement, which may be a sign of satisfactory levels of well-being. We also found that as perceived stress increases the engagement of these professionals decrease. Significant connections between these variables and the earned salary emerged.

Coping with child labor through the welfare policy: what is new in the scenario? The objective of this article is to analyze in the state of Paraíba what is new in the politics of social assistance in the confrontation of child labor. The research was carried out in 10 municipalities. Semi-structured interview, thematic content analysis and the SPSS were used. The sample of 174 participants was composed in each municipality by managing, professionals and users. In the understanding of the managers and professionals the ministry and the municipal secretaries determine socioassistential actions. Strategies for articulating sectoral policies and networks in the territories have been identified in the policy design, but what managers and professionals do are lectures and campaigns. Networks and joints in practice have not been identified. The confrontation of child labor with social assistance policy is not visible to users. The policy of social assistance is visible and sought after by the needs of adults and the family and less for children and adolescents. There is no new confrontation scenario.

The study investigated, in a longitudinal cohort, predictive models of arithmetic competence (AC) in the 1st year from language and executive functions assessed at preschool age. A total of 71 children were evaluated in oral language skills, preliminary writing abilities and executive functions. In the 1st year, the children were also evaluated in AC. Parents provided information on the socioeconomic level and teachers indicated children with difficulties. Language, oral (phonological awareness and vocabulary) and preliminary writing (knowledge of letters, reading and writing of words) abilities, together with indications of difficulty by the teacher in the ECE, were able to explain a mean of 62% of the variability in AC in the 1st year. The findings reveal predictive variables for the performance in arithmetic in the initial stage of Elementary Education, which can assist in early identification and the design of preventive intervention models.
