QUASI QUIDAM ORNATUS VITAE. Il decorum nel de officiis di Cicerone

The theory of decorum in Cicero’s de officiis (44 BC) seems to suggest to the Romans not simply the fourth virtue of a general system of conduct, but a super-virtue able to act as a “shock absorber” in the exercise of social and political life, summarized in a principle that Cicero defines as verecundiae partes, that is non offendere homines. Thus, while Romans citizens suffer the most radical crisis of their history, he indicates the decorum as the backbone of the complex architecture that constitutes the common good. In this paper I argue that Cicero’s contribution to the political and theoretical discussion on justice and respect may bring a very helpful tool for rethinking critically the contemporaries oppositions of social life.

L'idea di giustizia in Platone 柏拉图的正义观念

The idea of justice is the center of gravity of Plato’s philosophy. To define the concept of justice also means defining the necessary and universal human condition that society must honor to keep in balance. The paper proposes a reconstruction of the route of Platonic thought that only in the Dialogues of maturity – particularly in the Parmenides – takes the accomplished philosophical form, that is, the logical-dialectical form. Finally, the paper would like to point out whether the outcome of Platonic reflection about the idea of the Good and Justice may still be relevant in order to interpret the “core” of the epochal crisis of the contemporary world.

The purpose of this essay is to reveal the complete anthropological view inside La Boetie’s Discourse on voluntary servitude. At first, the author draws an idealistic image of the human nature, forged for fraternity and spirit of liberty. But as his description of the historical reality progresses, he is forced to recognize that man is easily corrupted and servile towards authoritarian governments: so appears his true nature. La Boetie urges men to change their condition.

This article deals with democracy. It is known that there are no perfect governments so the virtues and defects of governments will be highlighted. The main question is the one that Norberto Bobbio had reflected on more than a quarter of a century ago: does democracy have a future or is the recession so bad that there is not much hope for the future? We will be referring to the following works: N. Bobbio, Etica e politica. Scritti di impegno civile (Milano, Mondadori, 2009); and V. Possenti (a cura di), Annuario di Filosofia 2011 (Milano-Udine, Mimesis, 2011). This article aims to reorganized in a coherent order the many observations that Montesquieu devoted to the analysis of French Middle Ages. The Baron of La Brede details the political upheavals that afflicted the early centuries of the French monarchy, but especially he follows the juridical evolution of the fiefs that gradually became private properties disconnected from the hierarchies of vassalage. Montesquieu describes the rise of Hugh Capet as the result of a long process that involved the feudal system in its entirely. The Capetian dynasty completed the development of the French monarchy and adapt it to typological forms that Montesquieu had outlined in the first books of his masterpiece

In his essay, the author analyses Erik Peterson’s early work, more closely The Monotheism as Political Problem, to try to understand more accurately his critic to Carl Schmitt’s Political Theology. This entails also a reconsideration of Peterson’s Theological Tractates (recently published in english by Michael J. Hollerich): their solid and acknowledged philological and historical grounding did not impede a strong stance towards their times (i.e. the mid-30s in Germany), and shows the use of tools nonetheless – such as that of Ubertragung (transfer) – which are relevant within the current debate on Political Theology

In his answer to d’Alembert’s article on Geneva published in the Encyclopedie, Rousseau discusses the traditional platonic problem of mimesis and moral justification of dramatic performances in order to reject the project of establishing a theatre in the small Swiss republic. In this paper, the author shows how strictly this problem was connected to a political one according to Rousseau’s way of thinking: in a democratic nation, citizens’ good morals must be preserved from the corruptive power of theatre in so far as it implies the introduction of idleness, bad emulation, and a liking for ostentation. Finally, the author stresses the fundamental importance Rousseau attaches, on the contrary, to civic feasts for maintenance of public good morals.

Shipwrecked on the Slave Island, Iphicrate and Euphrosine are compelled by local law to switch over parts with their servants, Arlequin and Cleanthis. They have to live in the opposite role until both of the masters recover from the ill-humaneness which induces them to mistreat their servants. Different perspectives on this piece are to be exposed by analyzing how this very subversion affects the self-defining systems of each couple of characters. Cultural disorientation causes a “cathartic” reaction built on the unavoidable empathy between the two positions. In the XVIII century Marivaux was able to elaborate an inner revolution whose key values concern any society at any time.
