Square-glyphs: assessing the readability of multidimensional spatial data visualized as square-glyphs 方形字形:评估以方形字形显示的多维空间数据的可读性

ABSTRACT Glyphs have long been used to approach the challenge of visualising multidimensional data with geospatial reference. Depending on the glyph design, data-dense visualizations of several concurrent data dimensions can be created. The square-glyph is a compound glyph to represent up to four data dimensions, e.g. walkability indices, with reference to a gridded geographic space (Bleisch and Hollenstein 2018 [Exploring multivariate representations of indices along linear geographic features. Proceedings of the 2017 International Cartographic Conference, Washington D.C. (pp. 1–5)]). In this paper, we present a user study to evaluate the readability and interpretability of the square-glyphs. We compare user performance with square-glyph plots containing two and four simultaneously mapped data dimensions under different value compositions. Our results show that the user performance with square-glyphs does not decrease as the number of data dimensions represented increases from two to four. The study results indicate no significant differences in efficiency and effectiveness between the four-dimensional square-glyphs and the two-dimensional square-glyphs. The average values of five adjacent glyphs can be estimated with a mean error of eight percentage points. The results suggest that equal value distances between the displayed dimensions are more accurately perceived in a lower-value composition than in higher-value arrangements.

Atlassing sustainable development: a participatory and critical approach to neighbourhoods in transition 综合可持续发展:对转型期社区采取参与性和批判性的办法

ABSTRACT Sustainable neighbourhood development in historical multicultural contexts is a complex process encompassing many different issues (e.g. climate, biodiversity, social inequalities and wellbeing) and actors (residents, experts, local authorities and organisations). Different kinds of maps and representations support knowledge exchange, mediation between different practices and ambitions, as well as vision building among participants in different stages of the development process. Based upon the authors’ research experiences in historical garden city neighbourhoods in the city of Genk (BE), as well as existing literature and practice review, this paper discusses the production of an atlas as a critical and participatory practice for transdisciplinary research in sustainable development. By engaging with the methods of critical cartography and participatory mapping, we propose the process of ‘atlassing’ as a tool to support negotiation between various sustainability aspects and related everyday practices, actors and participatory activities.

ABSTRACT Orienteering maps are perhaps the least familiar map type to cartographers. There are features of orienteering maps that are useful to know in many ways, and they are an excellent way to illustrate in higher education how user needs influence the symbology of a map. The development of cartography over the last 100–120 years has considerably influenced the development of orienteering maps, and the development of surveying and printing technologies has also influenced this procedure. The unique and internationally standardised map specification of orienteering maps is based on topographic maps, but it is of paramount importance that they are perfectly adapted to the needs of orienteers if these maps are made by the orienteers themselves, the users. In the digital age, orienteers have been particularly innovative in implementing new survey and reproduction technologies as quickly as possible.

ABSTRACT Cartography is not an isolated discipline, but develops on the basis of many external impulses. The advent of web technologies has had a major impact on changes in cartography in recent decades. Successive generations of the Web have transformed the world of maps from static digital images, to servers providing map output, to complex interactive web applications and mash-ups. We are currently witnessing the emergence and development of the next new generation of the Web, which is referred to as Web3. Web3 is best known for its connection to the world of cryptocurrencies. This article considers the relationship between cartography and Web3 in particular. Are there opportunities that Web3 will offer cartographers? The article describes the basic features of the Web3 concept and their relation to the fields of cartography, which are considered by many experts as promising for the future. It concludes with two examples of Web3- based products related to maps and cartography. The aim of the paper is mainly to start a discussion regarding the evolutionary changes in cartography that may occur due to the emergence of Web3 technologies such as Blockchain.

Spatial aspects of evacuation: a closer look at user interaction during route choice 疏散的空间方面:在路线选择过程中更仔细地观察用户互动

ABSTRACT Emergencies such as evacuation from buildings are becoming the subject of research for both psychology and spatial sciences. This paper reports on one aspect of a larger project that dealt with the study of the influence of spatial parameters of buildings on decision-making during evacuation (other research objectives describe Snopková et al., 2023). In this research project, 208 participants received 20 stimuli in the form of an interactive virtual tour in which they could view the intersection (by moving the mouse). Within 8 s, they had to select one corridor that seemed safer to use in case of evacuation. In this paper, we focused on the analysis of the collected interaction data (mouse rotation) and their relationship to the laterality of the participants and the final choice of the evacuation corridor. Statistical analysis using correlation coefficients and the Welch t-test revealed no relationship between the side the participants initially turned and laterality or the final selected corridor. However, participants who chose the right corridor spent significantly more time turned to the right side and vice versa. To sum up, the presented findings support the ongoing research and discussion on human behaviour during the evacuation from a building.

ABSTRACT This paper briefly presents the current influence of geoinformatics on geography teaching in the Hungarian secondary schools. First, the main characteristics of geography teaching at both levels (elementary and secondary) are described, then the skills and competences that geography should develop at this level and how geoinformatics can help develop them. This is followed by an overview the current presence of basic cartographic and geoinformatics concepts found in the Geography textbooks and some examples of Hungarian research on the subject. Finally, some ideas are proposed to increase the presence of geoinformatics in secondary geography teaching.

ABSTRACT Web based, slippy, scalable maps are common place. Interacting with such digital maps at varying levels of detail is key to interpretation, and exploration of different geographies. The process of abstraction remains key to the immediate and successful interpretation of their many structures and geographical associations found at any given scale. Meaning is derived from such recognisable structures and map generalisation plays a critical role in communicating an entity's most characteristic and salient qualities. But what are these structures? How (and why) do they change over scale? Why are such questions relevant to automated mapping? In this paper we reflect on the value of perceptual studies and reconsider the context in which map generalisation now takes place. We review developments in pattern recognition techniques and the role played by machine learning techniques in identifying high level structures in abstracted maps. The benefits of their application include derivation of ontological descriptions of landscape, identification and preservation of salient landmarks across scales. We argue that a 'structuralist based approach' provides a more meaningful basis for measuring success and achieving more meaningful outputs. Ultimately the ambition is greater levels of automation in map generalisation, particularly in the context of web based solutions.

ABSTRACT Frontiers in cartographic research are often found at the intersections where cartography overlaps with other domains in art, science, and technology. In this editorial, we summarize the major themes that are found in a new collection of invited literature reviews. Broad themes that emerge from this collection include the rise of novel virtual environments, ongoing user-centered design challenges for improving the utility and usability of geographic visualizations, and new approaches for representation and analysis for the development of geovisualizations.
