Towards Finding a Minimal Set of Features for Predicting Students' Performance Using Educational Data Mining 利用教育数据挖掘寻找预测学生成绩的最小特征集

: An early prediction of students' academic performance helps to identify at-risk students and enables management to take corrective actions to prevent them from going astray. Most of the research works in this field have used supervised machine learning approaches to their crafted datasets having numerous attributes or features. Since these datasets are not publicly available, it is hard to understand and compare the significance of the chosen features and the efficacy of the different machine learning models employed in the classification task. In this work, we analyzed 27 research papers published in the last ten tears (2011-2021) that used machine learning models for predicting students' performance. We identify the most frequently used features in the private datasets, their interrelationships, and abstraction levels. We also explored three popular public datasets and performed statistical analysis like the Chi-square test and Person's correlation on its features. A minimal set of essential features is prepared by fusing the frequent features and the statistically significant features. We propose an algorithm for selecting a minimal set of features from any dataset with a given set of features. We compared the performance of different machine learning models on the three public datasets in two experimental setups-one with the complete feature set and the other with a minimal set of features. Compared to using the complete feature set, it is observed that most supervised models perform nearly identically and, in some cases, even better with the reduced feature set. The proposed method is capable of identifying the most essential feature set from any new dataset for predicting students' performance.

Factors Affecting the Students’ Actual Use Behaviour of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) during the Movement Control Order (MCO) 运动控制命令下影响学生虚拟学习环境实际使用行为的因素

: The Malaysian university students faced various obstacles and had unmet needs when it is no longer an option to carry out virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges faced by students call into question their actual use behaviour and true acceptance of the virtual learning environment (VLE). Thus, this study investigated the students’ actual use behaviour of VLEs, the factors that influence the actual use behaviour, the moderating effect of network connectivity on this relationship, and challenges faced by students while using this technology. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Unified Theory Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) model were used as the theoretical basis of this study. An online survey was conducted among the International Medical University (IMU) students. The finding surmised that most of the students have adopted the VLE during the pandemic. The findings further revealed that factors such as hedonic motivation, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use positively affect actual use behaviour, while network connectivity has no significant moderating effect on the relationship between the dimensions of the VLE and actual use behaviour. The key challenges include high cost associated with the VLE usage, and the students find the VLE is not entertaining or enjoyable. These results indicate that students will be inclined to accept the technology if there is high hedonic motivation, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use. Universities should focus on enhancing these factors to increase the acceptance of this technology among students, as VLEs have untapped potential for distance learning.

THE LEARNING OF WOMEN'S BLOOD IN THE SCIENCE SUBJECT OF THE SECONDARY SCHOOL STANDARD CURRICULUM (KSSM): A COMPARISON OF FIQH AND SCIENTIFIC PERSPECTIVES 中学标准课程(kssm)科学科目中妇女血液的学习:伊斯兰和科学观点的比较

Muslim men and women are required to study the corpus of knowledge known as women's blood education, which includes the science of menstruation, childbirth, and istihadah, as well as the related laws. This is due to the fact that the knowledge of women's blood is one of the sub-discussions under the chapter on worship, which contains laws pertaining to the fundamentals of Islam, such as prayer, fasting, and Hajj. At the secondary education level, this topic is introduced to 13-year-old Form 1 students through Form 1 science classes that include a subtopic on the menstrual cycle. The content analysis revealed, however, that there is a significant difference between the menstrual cycle learning content included in the Standard Document for Curriculum and Assessment (DSKP) of Form 1 science subjects and the discussion of the menstrual cycle from the perspective of jurisprudence, which has implications from the standpoint of legal determination. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to compare the discussion of menstrual blood written in the Standard Document for Curriculum and Assessment DSKP of Science KSSM Form 1 in Malaysia with the discussion of menstruation from a jurisprudential perspective in order to provide students with a correct understanding and prevent the existence of misunderstandings in determining the status of menstrual blood and istihadah in their subsequent learning. This research employs the comparative method to analyse multiple documents pertaining to the disciplines of science and fiqh. Analysed documents included the Standard Document for Curriculum and Assessment DSKP for Science subjects in the Malaysian Secondary School Standard Curriculum (KSSM), the Malaysian KSSM Form 1 Science textbook, the Syafi'i school of law, articles, and scientific studies. According to the results of the analysis, there are three differences in the input about menstrual blood that is placed in the textbook of Science subjects Form 1 with the discussion of menstruation from the perspective of the law, namely the age of puberty, the age of menopause, and the menstrual cycle. The differences in the input of menstruation learning content necessitate a clear understanding and comprehension of this subject specifically in the subject of Islamic Education under the subtopic of worship. Therefore, cooperation from all parties, including instructors, the administration, and the government, is crucial so that all students can learn about women's blood in school, thereby enabling them to worship with greater assurance.

THE INDUSTRY AND HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS (HEIS) COOPERATION IN IMPROVING THE MARKETABILITY OF TECHNICAL STREAM STUDENTS 行业和高等教育机构(heis)合作,提高技术流学生的适销性

Marketability skills of technical students can be enhanced by fostering a strong cooperation between the industry and educational institutions. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the roles played by the industry and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in increasing the marketability of technical students. This study was conducted to achieve two main objectives, first, to identify the role of HEIs in improving the quality of their curriculum and second, to identify the role of the industry in improving students’ performance during industrial training. This quantitative study involved 25 CISEC officers and lecturers of polytechnics across Johor and 210 students enrolled in the mechanical engineering programme at the same polytechnics who are undergoing industrial training. The mean value obtained from the analysis using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 26.0 indicate that HEIs play a role in balancing the curriculum content, develop generic skills, and cultivating science and technology in teaching. Meanwhile, the industry plays a very important role in increasing graduates’ marketability skills, specifically in terms of their self-skills, knowledge, and personal attributes during industrial training. The finding indicates there is an-going collaboration between the industry and HEIs in improving the marketability of technical stream students. Therefore, the Vocational Training and Technical Education Division should encourage various industrial sectors to collaborate with HEIs ensure to increase marketability of technical stream graduates.

Lifelong learning has emerged as a global priority in the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015 - 2025 for addressing many challenges of sustainable development. Meanwhile, in an online setting, learners have fewer possibilities to interact with higher education institutions. There have been several studies related to interaction, flow, and student satisfaction. Nevertheless, it is relevant to western countries and traditional students. This study intended to assess how different kinds of interaction (between learners, course materials, instructors, and other learners) influenced student satisfaction among Malaysian distance learners. Moore’s Transactional Distance Theory (1989), which explains how people interact, is a key part of the research framework for this study. The current research involved 270 respondents that conform to the inclusion criteria, and SPSS was used to analyze the hypotheses. Organization and instructor may use the results in embracing a user-friendly educational experience with versatile virtual professional assistance, which is crucial for rigorous online courses. For that reason, this study will provide an overview and opportunities to communicate, cooperate, and gain input for social reinforcement.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND NATIVE LANGUAGE LEARNING AMONG RUNGUS IN SABAH, MALAYSIA 马来西亚沙巴龙格族的乐器与母语学习

Native Language learning is a complex and remarkable achievement because the process generally emerges from unique interactions that distributed across social networks and is embodied in individuals. Accordingly, scholars portray the need of a specific approach in native language learning. Among the native learning approach identified is the ‘experiential learning’, an approach based on the idea of learning from experience as the path to lifelong learning and development. Scholars who is a fan of the learning approach argues that providing the learners an opportunity to learn through experience thus become immensely valuable. Some even specifically suggest that musical instruments can be used as a promising experience based instructional instrument in language learning. But how exactly the musical instruments affect native language learning process? Through the application of a mixed-method approach, this paper examines the relationship between musical instruments and the native language learning via the lens of Rungus in Sabah, Malaysia. It shows that the musical instruments affect the native language learning among Rungus in Sabah, Malaysia. What this now hinted is that the musical instruments are an important part of a successful native language learning process, thus made it clear the need among instructors to consider musical instruments as part of their teaching activities.

Malaysia is a country with ethnic and cultural diversity. In an effort to understand the cultural diversity in Malaysia, one of the ways is the need to have high self-efficacy in preservice teachers to teach in a class with diverse student cultures. Self-efficacy against the cultural diversity that exists is an important aspect in a preservice teacher when dealing with students from various cultural backgrounds. Preservice teachers need to have a high level of self-efficacy so that each teaching and learning session in a class that consists of diverse cultures can attract students' interest and not be biased, thereby optimizing the teacher's teaching towards students in the class. Teacher education programs need to provide more opportunities for preservice teachers to engage with cultural diversity so that they can increase their self-efficacy to teach diverse students and further improve the level of teacher teaching towards students who are made up of various ethnicities and cultures.

MEASURING THE RESEARCH EFFICIENCY OF UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA (UITM) BY USING DATA ENVELOPMENT ANALYSIS (DEA): A CASE STUDY IN UITM PERLIS 基于数据包络分析(dea)的科技大学科研效率测度——以科技大学为例

This paper aims to measure research efficiency of UiTM Perlis by using two different models, which are the Charnes, Cooper, and Rhodes (CCR) model and the Banker, Charnes, and Cooper (BCC) model. The data used is secondary data started from 2018 to 2022, obtained from the departments involved such as the Academic Affairs Division (HEA); Industry, Community, and Alumni Network (ICAN) Office, and Administration Office, UiTM Perlis. It has also been distinguished the competencies for each year and examined the current trends towards 2025, with the aim of achieving the mission of the UiTM2025 strategic plan. There are five decision making units (DMU's) for both aspects studied; 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, which are the five distinguished years for this study. The use of the two models in this study, namely CCR-I and BCC-I is to ensure that the ranking analysis results are more accurate and precise. Both models use input-oriented model functions as a way of maximizing efficiency in order to increase the number of fairies. For research efficiency, two DMU’s which is 2018 and 2020, were ranked first for both models. Thus, making this DMU's ranked first for both models.
