INTERACTION BETWEEN SCHOOL ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE AND PASSION FOR TEACHING TOWARD TEACHERS’ PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING IN SEBERANG PERAI TENGAH, PULAU PINANG 槟榔屿毗莱登加州学校组织氛围与教学热情对教师心理健康的影响

Psychological well-being means the individual's ability to accept themselves and others in their environment as well as knowing their own potential in addition to developing their existing potential. Teachers are one of the important elements in pedagogy to produce quality education, especially in mastering 21st century learning skills. The imperfect psychological well-being of teachers can affect their quality of life. School organizational climate is a general concept that includes the environment experienced by educators and patterns their behavior especially in the school area. Based on Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986; 1997), this study investigates the interaction between the school's organizational climates on the psychological well-being of teachers in Seberang Perai Tengah, Penang in addition to Passion for Teaching used as a mediator between the two variables. To test the suggested hypothesis, data was collected through a questionnaire. The sample of this study consists of 196 teachers who teach in the Seberang Perai Tengah district, Penang who use the rules of thumbs by Roscoe et al. (1975) This study has found that the relationship between the School Organizational Climate and the psychological well-being of teachers is related, but the passion for teaching as a mediating variable used in this study does not show a relationship between the organizational climate and the psychological well-being of teachers. Based on the findings of the study, the methodology, theoretical and practical implications of the study were discussed. Recommendations for future research are also presented.

Leadership is the source of all human journeys related to life. The rise and fall of a civilization or nation can refer to the leadership pattern that leads a community group at a certain period. The fact is, the birth of leadership in one generation is different from another generation and is greatly influenced by the education system that is applied to the generation in question. Education is always changing according to the current needs of a generation. Therefore, education should always develop in a better direction for the survival of a generation. Next, educational progress cannot be innovated except through creative and viable research efforts. This article covers the main concepts related to Islamic-based leadership covering research and education. While the scope of the study is confined, that is in the context of education and research in Malaysia.

A CROSS-CULTURAL COMPARISON OF CHINESE AND MALAY ANIMAL WORDS 汉语和马来语动物词汇的跨文化比较

The Chinese and Malaysian people have evolved an in-depth observation and comprehension of animals, resulting in complex linkages and the formation of a great number of animal-related words. These animal words not only relate to diverse creatures in nature. But they also include the distinct cultural characteristics of both countries. Because of the two countries' distinct cultural environments, mentalities, lifestyles, religious convictions, and historical backgrounds, there are also various interpretations of how animals are perceived and understood, resulting in both similar and disparate cultural connotations of the words related with them. It will not be difficult for native speakers to understand, but it will inevitably be difficult for second-language learners who lack such cultural knowledge. Consider this, this paper compiles animal words in Chinese and Malay. The interdependence of language and culture serves as the foundation for this paper's comparative analysis of frequently used animal words in Chinese and Malay using descriptive explanation and comparative analysis. To accomplish the goal of language cross-cultural communication for second language learners and develop their cross-cultural awareness, the objective of this study is to investigate the similarities and differences in the cultural meanings of animal words in these two languages and discover the factors that impact their cultural similarities and differences.

VOCABULARY JOURNAL: A VOYAGE TO SUCCESSFUL WRITING PERFORMANCE 词汇日记:成功写作的航程

The importance of vocabulary competency has been long established as it serves as a crucial element in learning English as a second language. It is however more prominent in writing as the breadth and depth of students’ vocabulary are reflected in the general quality of their writing. By utilising Stufflebeam’s (2003) Product Evaluation model, this paper reports the impacts of the study on keeping vocabulary journal towards 71 students’ writing performance at one of the secondary schools in Sabah. It evaluated their attitudes towards keeping vocabulary journal, identified positive, negative, intended and unintended outcomes of keeping vocabulary journal and aimed to find out whether there is any difference in the students’ writing scores prior to and after keeping vocabulary journal. A mixed-method was employed into the study. Self-reported survey and class discussion were employed in the qualitative approach, whereas the quantitative part of this study involved only the writing scores from the results of pre-test and post-test. The results indicated positive students’ attitudes towards vocabulary journal. It also highlighted four outcomes of the study; positive and negative outcomes, as well as intended and unintended outcomes. Although the pre-test and post-test writing scores were insignificant enough to make any difference, the introduction of vocabulary journal into writing classroom has surely made an impact on the students. This study added empirical support onto the claims on the benefits of vocabulary journals.

ESL LEARNERS’ USE OF BLOG TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILLS 英语学习者使用博客提高写作技巧

The usage of computers and the internet is widespread in this contemporary period. The social networks are among the most popular online services. Social networking sites are now employed in the realm of education as well as for socialising. The perception of ESL students towards the usage of blogs in writing classes will be examined in this paper.In this experimental class, 23 tertiary students taking a reading and writing module are asked to start their own blogs. The students completed their classwork and assignments on the blog. The learners are given a questionnaire to complete at the end of the module regarding the usage of blogs in general and the use of blogs to improve their writing abilities. A few students are also chosen at random and interviewed to learn more about how they feel about using blogs in writing classes.

THE USE OF QUIZIZZ AS A GAME-BASED LEARNING TOOL IN IMPROVING THE MASTERY OF GRAMMAR: LOW-PROFICIENT L2 LEARNERS’ PERCEPTIONS 测验作为一种基于游戏的学习工具在提高语法掌握中的应用:低熟练度第二语言学习者的认知

It is indubitable that in this digital age, a plethora of game-based platforms have been used globally to teach students English at all levels. It is also imperative to explore the degree of effectiveness of using gamification in English language acquisition so that its benefits in educational settings can be boosted to the fullest. In congruence with that, this paper gleans into low-proficient L2 learners' perceptions towards the use of Quizizz, a game-based learning tool, towards improving their mastery of English grammar, a pivotal element of acquiring English at the tertiary educational level. This study employed a questionnaire to collect quantitative data from 65 students at Universiti Malaysia Sabah who took the Essential Communication Skills subject. Two parts of the questions posed in the questionnaire are Part A, which is on a 5-point Likert scale and comprises ten questions on students' perceptions of Quizizz features and grammar mastery, and Part B, which consists of one checkbox question with four options on the challenges of using Quizizz. The data yielded positive perceptions that the use of Quizizz is indeed a helpful tool to improve students' grasp of English grammar, and most respondents perceived internet connection issues, distraction from the timing and touch screen’s sensitivity that led to accidental incorrect responses, and jitters when answering questions as the central challenges of using Quizizz. Positive feedback obtained from this study serves as supportive evidence that Quizizz should be constantly and broadly used at the university level for low-proficient students to learn and practise grammar lessons and ultimately level up their comprehension of English grammar. At the same time, educators and educational institutions can take some apt measures to address the challenges so that the benefits of learning English grammar through Quizizz can be optimised.

EDUCATION CHALLENGES IN SABAH BEFORE 1963 1963年以前沙巴的教育挑战

Sabah is one of the states in the Federation of Malaysia that is famous not only for the natural beauty of its flora and fauna but also for the uniqueness of its community which consists of dozens of ethnic groups. Based on history, education in Sabah has existed since the administration of the Sultanate of Brunei and the Sultanate of Sulu. While under the rule of the Sultanate of Brunei, the Muslim community who mostly lived in the coastal area of Sabah had an education based on the study of the Al-Quran. During that period, education was in an informal form focused on religious book reading activities carried out in prayer hall, mosques and lodges. Meanwhile for the non-Muslim community, education is also informal through guidance from parents, certain ceremonies or celebrations. When Sabah was under the administration of foreign powers, education in the state was heavily influenced by the policies of administrators such as the British North Borneo Chartered Company (SBBUB) and British colonialism. However, it is generally found that the education of the Sabah community is not taken seriously by the SBBU administrators nor the British colonial authorities. Therefore, the discussion will be focused on the challenges faced in the field of education in Sabah before 1963. The study of this paper uses a qualitative analysis approach and uses archival and library research methods by analyzing various primary and secondary sources such as Colonial Office Files, Statements Annuals, books and articles to obtain research information sources. This study will produce an analysis that can provide a clearer understanding of the historical background of the development of education in Sabah. Identification of the challenges faced will enable the planning of strategies that can further strengthen education in Sabah.

This paper examines the debates surrounding the function of written corrective feedback in L2 writing.

The English language is regarded as an important mode of communication in Malaysia, particularly in higher education institutions and the workplace. The perception that graduates lack English communication skills renders them unemployable upon graduation. Therefore, a great deal of effort has been expended to produce students who can communicate effectively in a variety of social and professional settings. The Ministry of Education has taken numerous steps to improve the English proficiency of students. This study examines pre-university students' willingness to communicate (WTC) in a digital setting at a local university. This study employed a qualitative methodology and included 12 classroom observations. The classroom observation data was subjected to an inter-rater reliability analysis, and the results revealed that the mood and role of the English Language Instructors (ELIs) significantly influenced the occurrences of WTC in English among pre-university students. The findings of this study are intended to provide stakeholders, curriculum developers, and ELIs with a better understanding of the teaching and learning factors that must be considered in order to ensure students' WTC in English.

ACCEPTANCE AND EFFECTIVENESS OF TASAWWUR ISLAM COURSE AMONG FOUNDATION STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA SABAH 马来西亚沙巴大学预科学生对tasawwur伊斯兰课程的接受度和有效性

The offer of basic studies at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is the same as that offered at other local universities, namely to students who are graduates of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). In pursuing the foundation level at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Muslim students need to follow the subject of Tasawwur Islam as one of the compulsory subjects. The subject of Tasawwur Islam is a continuation of the application of religious knowledge to Muslim students to provide added value to their lives. The question that arises here is does this Tasawwur Islam course have an encouraging impact on the lives of students? Therefore, this study was conducted to see the level of acceptance and effectiveness of Tasawwur Islam courses among students at UMS. This study uses quantitative methodologies based on questionnaires distributed through Google Form. There were 50 respondents among the students at UMS who had taken the time to participate in their views and perceptions on the level of acceptance and effectiveness of the Tasawwur Islam course at the foundation level. The results of the Tasawwur Islam course offering at the foundation level showed that 84% of the students can increase their knowledge especially in the ins and outs of Islam, 60% of students can apply the knowledge gained in everyday life and 42% of students can transform themselves into a better person than before. Overall, the offering of Tasawwur Islam courses at this fundamental level has a positive impact on the lives of students in the coming days.
