WHOLE BRAIN TEACHING STRATEGIES PROMOTE ACTIVE LEARNING STUDENTS YEAR FOUR IN SCIENCE SUBJECT 全脑教学策略促进四年级理科学生的主动学习

Active learning is an important aspect of creating a fun and achieving learning outcomes, but it is quite difficult to create in science subjects if the approach used by teachers is less appropriate. This study is an action research conducted to improve active learning among primary school students using Whole Brain Teaching Strategies (WBTS) in Science subjects. The only three types of WBT strategies used are Class-Yes, Mirror-Words and Teach-Okay. This action research was conducted among 42 students of Year 4 at a primary school in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. Data were collected through 2 methods, which are video recording and interviews with students and Science teacher. The results of the study found that Whole Brain Teaching Strategies (WBTS) has been able to increase students' active learning during the learning process as this strategy can develop cognitive remembering. Moreover, students understand what is taught by teachers in learning process through WBTS where it affects information retention in student's long term memory. Therefore, students show positive emotional development. In addition, it can create a meaningful cooperative learning with positive social interactions between peers when students are positively interdependent in the team. Each group member strives to complete group assignments and help weaker members so that the group success is experienced together thus strengthening intrinsic motivation among students. The use of WBTS has been able to be applied effectively in enhancing a meaningful learning process in the classroom that can give ideas to other teachers to apply in other subjects as well.

World technology is always developing rapidly. Countries that fail to keep up with the tide of change will be considered lagging not only from the point of view of technology, economy, even in the field of education. Along with the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) that the world is currently experiencing, it has changed the landscape of the education world. Islamic education should not lag behind in filling the space found in the advancement of technology, especially in providing human capital capable of handling technology with Islamic principles and values. This paper will discuss the impact of IR 4.0 in the development of the primary school Islamic Education curriculum or known as the Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR). Besides that, this writing also touches on the issues and challenges faced in implementing this curriculum. At the end of this writing will break down the actions that need to be taken to ensure that the Islamic Education curriculum is always relevant and meets current needs.

ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING (ODL) AND STUDENTS’ SELF-ESTEEM BASED ON DIFFERENT GENDER PERSPECTIVES 基于不同性别视角的在线远程学习与学生自尊

Online Distance Learning (ODL) has been implemented in universities for over two years. Despite advancements in technology, ODL has proven to be challenging for students, which indirectly affects their self-esteem, regardless of gender. Thus, the study aims to investigate students’ self-esteem and to examine any significant mean difference between gender and students’ self-esteem. A survey was conducted on 378 students, and SPSS 26.0 was used to analyse the hypotheses of the study. It was found that students’ self-esteem level during ODL is moderate. The findings also revealed no significant difference between gender and student perception on self-esteem. The findings are expected to benefit academicians, policymakers, and university management in enhancing ODL implementation and preparing them for future learning challenges.

PREPARATION AND MANNERS OF STUDENTS IN OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING (ODL) DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC SEASON COVID-19大流行季节开放和远程学习(odl)学生的准备和行为

Preparation and preservation of manners during teaching and learning (PdP) is an important element in the process of acquiring knowledge. The variety of PdP methods should focus on this aspect to maintain a good relationship between students and teachers, an understanding of knowledge, and practise with it. The learning process that is carried out through open and distance learning (ODL) during the covid-19 pandemic season shows that the aspect of appreciating the manners of getting knowledge is not as celebrated as face-to-face PdP. The issues of internet access, limited learning equipment, lack of focus during class, learning while chatting and lying down, disrespecting the teacher, not greeting, and so on have led to problems in the implementation and effectiveness of PdP in all educational institutions, including UiTM. Therefore, this study aims to identify student preparation and analyze the application of student manners during ODL learning during the covid-19 pandemic season. The approaches of qualitative through document analysis and quantitative through the distribution of questionnaires to students of the Diploma in Halal Management, UiTM Negeri Sembilan Branch, were selected for this study and the data were analyzed descriptively using IBM SPSS Statistics version 23 software. The results of the study found that the preparation and manners application of the majority of students are at a very high level, even though the PdP session is conducted in ODL. The study also found that the majority of students still continue the practice of preparing PdP and maintaining good manners during ODL learning, as in the face-to-face learning process before the covid-19 pandemic season. However, there are still preparations and manners that need to be improved by students. In conclusion, the careful preparation and preservation of manners among students during the ODL learning session is still relevant and has a great impact on the appreciation of the manners of seeking knowledge as advocated by Islam while also contributing to the improvement of the PdP process more effectively.

STUDENTS’ AWARENESS AND UTILISATION OF ELECTRONIC BOOKS IN UiTM CAWANGAN PULAU PINANG 槟港嘉旺湾理工大学学生对电子书籍的认识及使用情况

To provide open access to electronic resources, academic libraries spend millions each year. Free e-books may not keep students interested in and using them, despite the fact that they are available for free. In fact, the librarians at Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak (PTAR) found that students did not fully utilize the e-books available. Thus, they requested a survey to be conducted for students at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Cawangan Pulau Pinang (UiTMCPP) on their e-book awareness and usage. The goal of this study is to identify the reasons why students use and avoid using e-books. More than 200 students at UiTMCPP completed this survey about how they use e-books for learning, how they search for them, what devices that they use to obtain them, and how they read and utilise them. Results show that more than half of the students prefer e-books because they are free and easy to use, while others prefer paper books because they are more convenient. Most students also are aware of and use the library's e-book collection to its fullest, according to the survey results.

The environment is very important to sustain the prosperity of the nation, society, and human beings. Negligence to protect the environment will result in great catastrophes by causing natural disasters to plague mankind. Environmental education has been regarded as a strategic solution to overcome challenging environmental issues. there is no specific subject on environmental education in the Malaysian school syllabus which led to poor public awareness, lack of understanding, and exposure to environmental issues and knowledge. Hence, this study is conducted to measure the level of environmental literacy among secondary school students in Putrajaya, Malaysia. Descriptive research design and correlation were used in this study. Instruments for Environmental Attitude Inventory (EAI) comprises a scale of 1-5 ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree and was distributed to 120 from four students who were selected using simple random sampling. The finding shows that the value of the Adjusted R square is 0.260, which indicates that the factor-independent variables (knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes) only contributed to 26% of the influencing dependent variable (responsible environmental behavior). This value is more appropriate for determining the actual value in a population with a small sample size. Coefficients multiple linear regressions show that the value of t=0.358 shows knowledge does not influence responsible behavior while the most dominant is attitude. It is hoped that the findings from this research will contribute to environmental education in Malaysia.

THE PRACTICE OF DEMOCRATIZATION OF EDUCATION IN THE MANAGEMENT OF ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS AND CHINESE SCHOOLS IN MALAYSIA 马来西亚伊斯兰教宗教学校与华人学校管理中教育民主化的实践

The existence of Islamic Religious Schools (IRS) and Chinese Schools (CS) preceeded the history of the formation of the country and developed along with the various educational policies implemented by the government until it successfully dignified its position in the current of national education. However, the managers in both types of schools were found to be in conflict with the government in fighting for their educational rights. The conflict between school managers and the government is about maintaining the main goal of school establishment or the school’s traditional curriculum, namely the Diniah curriculum (IRS) and the Chinese language and culture curriculum (CS). In addition, school managers also experience conflicts of overlapping management powers between the School Management Board (SMB) and the government, the ambiguity of education rights based on national legislation and a lack of justice from the aspect of government financial aid distribution. This study aims to examine the practice of democratization of education that exists in the management of both types of schools. In this qualitative study, data was collected through semi-structured interviews with two managers from IRS and two CS managers in Malaysia. The findings of the study show that the government is seen to be practicing imperfect democracy in fulfilling the four aspects of both types of schools’ educational rights, namely the main goal of establishing schools, management authority, legislation and the distribution of financial aid. This government’s practice shows the spirit of democratization of education that prioritizes the direction of the national education policy to meet the country’s aspirations in facing the needs of the 21th century.

This conceptual paper aims to study the digital assessment literacy of ESL instructors in Malaysia. In education, assessment is one of the most crucial components in the teaching and learning process. Assessment allows the instructors to gather information of the students to determine the students’ knowledge and to make improvements based on the data collected. With the digitalisation in education, it has propelled the relevancy of digital assessment. Despite the increasing use of digital assessments in educational settings, many educators lack the necessary digital assessment literacy skills to effectively create, administer, and interpret these assessments. Therefore, this study aims to explore the digital assessment literacy of ESL instructors. This study will use semi-constructed interview and analysis of documents. The type of sampling employed in this study is purposive sampling towards 15 ESL instructors in Malaysian Universities. The data will be analysed using thematic analysis. The expected result from this study is that ESL instructors will have knowledge of digital assessment but have areas of improvement in doing digital assessment. The researchers acknowledge that knowing how to use digital assessment tool is not sufficient, and teachers need to remain aware of how these tools are successful or unsuccessful. It is hoped that the outcome of this research will help the teachers to be knowledgeable in how they understand, conduct, and interpret digital assessments

PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY: EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF OUTDOOR SCIENCE ACTIVITIES ON SCIENCE STREAM STUDENTS IN PULAU PINANG 现象学研究:探讨户外科学活动对槟榔屿理科学生的影响

The experience of outdoor science activities is one of the most enjoyable learning strategies. Various activities can be carried out through hands-on experiences and can help engage students' interest in science. However, the time constraints faced by teachers in schools prevent the traditional teaching and learning methods from being transformed into more engaging ones. Nevertheless, there are higher education institutions that carry out science activities with school students outside the classroom. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the effects of science activities provided by one of the higher education institutions in Penang on science stream students in premier secondary schools. This phenomenological study utilizes a qualitative design involving eight informants, including five students and three facilitators, to explore their views and experiences during outdoor science activities. The phenomenological approach was chosen as it provides a deep understanding of the experiences encountered by the informants. The data were collected through interview sessions. The data were thematically analyzed and yielded three themes: innovative science activities, thinking skills, and student attitudes. The study found that after participating in these science activities for four months, the informants' self-confidence levels increased and their thinking skills improved, especially when they achieved results from the science activities in national or international competitions. Their attitudes also became more mature and confident when facing judges and the public. They became more interested in science and continued to choose science-related fields as they pursued higher education. The findings of this study provide information for policymakers, schools, higher education institutions, teachers, parents, or other stakeholders to better understand the importance of organizing and conducting science activities outside the classroom.
