An Approach for High Risk Prevention Research
Pub Date : 1995-07-01 DOI: 10.1300/J023V08N03_10

SUMMARY This paper provides a framework for prevention research, based on Chaos theory elements, which was developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). The framework was designed with both theoretical and practical considerations for minority communities, where traditional experimental research methodology was found to be inappropriate. This framework offers the advantage of conceptualizing a disparate field and provides a model for designing and evaluating targeted prevention interventions. A variety of prevention research paradigms are introduced, the research problem which helped form the proposed framework is discussed, and the advantages of the model are noted.

ABSTRACT Drinking in Russia is not limited by social class or region, but the style of drinking can vary by region and social status. This paper describes drinking behavior, drinking-related problems, and treatment strategies for a group of Russian men and women academic researchers in Siberia. It specifically relates how their social status influences their drinking behavior, interpersonal relations, and how they respond to treatment for alcoholism. The paper also reviews how Soviet alcohol policies affected the drinking behavior and treatment of alcoholism.

Contact Tracing for HIV Infection: Policy and Program Implication from a 50-State Survey

SUMMARY Contact tracing, the identification and active recruitment of non-self-presenting persons likely to be exposed to communicable disease, has been a major public health practice in the United States since the syphilis control programs of the 1940s. The nature of the AIDS epidemic, however, creates extraordinary difficulties for contact tracing programs attempting to reduce HIV infection. An analysis is here presented of the contact tracing strategies currently employed by the 50 States to combat the AIDS epidemic. Policy and programming implications are drawn from this 50-State survey, in an effort to adjust current contact tracing programs for HIV infection to improve their effectiveness.

Pub Date : 1993-07-01 DOI: 10.1300/J023V08N01_01

SUMMARY This article reviews recent developments in the field of alcoholism treatment research. The following major topics are addressed: the relative efficacy and cost-effectiveness of various treatment approaches, the use of brief interventions, the identification of patient-treatment matches and treatment processes that predict better outcomes, the efficacy of self-help groups, relapse prevention, the treatment of dual-diagnosis alcoholics, and pharmacotherapy. Under-studied and unresolved issues are identified and discussed, and suggestions are made concerning future research.

Sociocultural Aspects of Alcohol Use and Abuse: Ethnicity and Gender
Pub Date : 1993-07-01 DOI: 10.1300/J023V08N01_04
R. Collins
SUMMARY This review focuses on ethnicity and gender as key components of a sociocultural perspective on alcohol use and abuse. Conceptual issues in the use of ethnic categorization, particularly as they relate to the failure to examine differences within groups, are highlighted. Research on the prevalence of use, primary prevention, and treatment is reviewed and recommendations for future research are outlined. It is concluded that more careful attention to the impact of sociocultural factors, rather than the reliance on ethnic and gender based comparisons, will add to the knowledge gained from research on alcohol use and abuse.
