Voices of ‘children’ have emerged in recent years in the vast field of post-traumatic memory, thanks to the rise of associations, publications and talleres dedicated to children who lived without parents or in exile, or with unworthy parents. This painful page is reconstructed not only by children of desaparecidos but also by desaparecidos or apropiados children, after having found their families of origin from which they had been torn away to be adopted by the military and their associates. Women’s texts deal with these issues both in collective testimonies and in individual texts and novels.

Carner was a renowned writer when he started his diplomatic career in 1920. He was considered the most eminent living Catalan poet and had an important presence in the social and cultural scene in Barcelona. His joining the Spanish consular service came as a bombshell. From then on he never again lived permanently in Catalonia, although he kept in touch and came back frequently until the Civil War. This article provides a detailed description of Carner’s diplomatic endeavours (and biography) based on his file at the Spanish Foreign Affairs Ministry’s archive, and it includes a final table that summarises all the jobs, postings and dates of his diplomatic career.

Scholars point to the emancipatory potential of contemporary Latin American chronicles, noting that they offer a counterhegemonic discourse on gender violence. However, little attention has been paid to the ways in which this discourse is constructed and made effective. Through the textual analysis of Huesos en el desierto (2002), a chronicle by Sergio González Rodríguez, this article will show how the hybridity of this work reinforces its critical potential. Cognitive poetics will be used to analyse how different techniques used by González Rodríguez not only consolidate his ethos but also provoke a reflection in the reader on the distinctions between fiction and non-fiction. In addition to shedding light on how the genre of the chronicle works, this article aims to offer a new interpretation of Huesos en el desierto. Moreover, it will demonstrate the usefulness of a cognitive approach for a better understanding of contemporary Latin American chronicles.
