This article highlights the variety that characterises the Spanish romances of chivalry as a genre. The uniqueness of Valerián de Hungría by Dionís Clemente (1540) is given by its rich content and lexicon. By the end of the book, the author includes a heated debate between two knights whose opinions about love contrast. They are Pacífico and Cupidio. Such a dispute needs to be studied in light of the bibliography about the genre within the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, in order to find out which elements Clemente re-elaborates. The investigation develops through the comparison with a few episodes taken from other romances of chivalry, but also with the ideology spread within contemporary works in which the same themes of Valerián are remarked.

In recent years Juan Rodolfo Wilcock has been the subject of renewed critical interest. This article focuses on the relations between some of Wilcock’s and Jorge Luis Borges’ philosophical conceptions, especially regarding their reflections on the concept of ‘paradox’ and its repercussions on literary representation. This article examines a series of texts that have remained, so far, practically unexplored: Wilcock’s newspapers and journal articles. It is in fact here, in this specific corpus, that the impact of Borges’ work on Wilcock’s thought becomes more explicit, therefore opening a new critical perspective for the interpretation of Wilcock’s place in the Italian literary field.

This paper will examine the use of missing information in some novels by Benito Pérez Galdós: the trilogy El doctor Centeno, Tormento, La de Bringas. Galdós’ plots are built on allusions and withheld information, and revealed by different narrative voices; they require an active participation on the part of the reader, who must put together different blocks of information as though they were tesseras in a mosaic. This missing information leads to subjective textual lacunas, that is, they are deliberately interlocutory and relational, in order to lead the reader to a continual collaboration and to make him/her create logical connections between the text’s different perspectives. The use of this reticence strategy creates an almost metafictional relationship between Galdós’ works and the reader, a bond that is surprisingly modern with respect to the latter’s horizons of expectation.
