When the first expressways of the Transmilenio system were constructed in Bogota, pedestrian bridges became crucial elements that support the system by linking directly pedestrians and public transport stations. Pedestrian bridges acquired a new role, not only as connecting hubs of the system but also as originating spaces where a new urbanity is generated. Bridges are also devices that facilitate access from the stations to neighborhoods and to other means of transport; they allow access to new equipment, from commercial services to street vending. The object of this paper is to analyze the pedestrian bridges and the public space of the Transmilenio system in Bogotá, in order to understand its logic as a connector between borders and as devices that generate a double experience in people: they guarantee their access to public transport and therefore to the city, and at the same time its function as a new social space that integrates mobility, connections and activities at local level.

Despite its continuing consideration, urban mobility remains as an unresolved issue that provoke challenges of diverse nature; two of them seem particularly relevant: the efficiency based on ensuring access and the traffic flow and quality, these two aspects suggest either the correct integration or the isolation of the various systems. In a spatial model, one that leans to contain shared, fragmented, and frequently unsuited spaces, where the place for the pedestrian is relegated, recovering a dedicated space for pedestrians is the most important challenge. An exclusive pedestrian network can not only improve urban quality, but also introduce a new logic of thinking to the models of movement in cities.

What does movement on foot mean in current complex large cities? Many cities all over the world have tackled the issue of reclaiming more footpaths, facing vehicular mobility abuse. How do they do it? What strategies do they use? To what extent are they able to transform road schemes and urban structures resulting from the long-term application of a speed and efficiency paradigm? How limited is the negotiation among types of mobility within the city? To what extent does it make sense to pedestrians? This “regeneration” has added “higher quality” public space to streets; the capillary network of mobility supposedly distributes such public space throughout the city in a more uniform array. Is this a possibility or do pedestrian zones generate privileges and isolated hierarchies? Finally, it is worth asking if the special interventions for pedestrians are copying the internal logics of those who walk, to give sense to these places where there are inserted.

In many coastal cities it is quite common to find a heavy traffic route that runs parallel to the seafront and hinders access to it. This is the case of not only Barcelona, but also Lisbon, Genoa, Nice and Porto in Europe; or Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, Lima and Havana in Latin America; Istanbul, Alexandria, Boston, Santa Monica or Hong Kong, in the rest of the world. There are numerous cases, and it is expected to be so, because there are topological reasons that facilitate the emergence of these circulation axes along the coast, despite the inconveniences that they imply. Attending to its strategic value for the correct operation of the urban and territorial road system, is it possible to delete or integrate them properly? On an attempt to answer this question, this article will expose the different forms adopted by these roads and their relationship with the city and the sea.

The insertion of expressways in the city remains an issue of particular importance in the contemporary urban development. In the discussion between roads that pass-through and their integration in the environment sets the importance of thinking about the architecture that surrounds the infrastructure simultaneously. Three cases illustrate the topics of discussion, and they are looked from three different views, that imply a way of thinking the new face of the city
