Abstract This column describes the game of Royal Pickles – a “King of the Court’’ variation of pickleball that removes the bored spectator element from the class and creates a solution for the challenge of having too many students and not enough court space.

Abstract Beach volleyball has been one of the fastest-growing sports over the past 30 years, and its continued popularity due to the Olympics and expanded global media coverage has caused schools to see the benefits of adding beach volleyball to their curriculum. It also makes an excellent lifetime sport due to the low impact of playing in the sand. This article will share instructional ideas for teaching beach volleyball concepts with or without a sand court for physical education grades 6-12. Included in the article are offensive strategies, serving strategies, defensive strategies, and equipment

Abstract Despite the high level of education and training that is required for the profession, PE is often met with negative perceptions. The misconceptions and stereotypes about the profession can make it difficult for PE teachers to be taken seriously and can discourage students from pursuing a career in the field. It’s important for PE teachers to advocate for the profession and to work to change these perceptions by promoting the true value and importance of PE. The focus of this article is to examine these negative perceptions and look to identify some of the root causes that lead to their pervasiveness.

Abstract Cross country has grown in popularity and provides youth with the ability to put into practice both physical capability and mental strength and preparedness. However, such preparedness can also lead to physical injuries such as shin splints, or mental fatigue, which can lead to dropout and/or burnout. Yoga is an activity that has become increasingly popular and has been shown to present both physical and mental benefits to its participants. This article aims to provide foundational information for coaches and young cross country and distance athletes to put yoga into action for physical and mental practice. Specific postures are provided with special benefits, stretches, and strengthening information to ensure the basic understanding of the why behind each pose and how that pose tackles a particular challenge for runners.

Abstract “Can’t do it.” “Don’t care.” Physical educators and scholars have reported the use of these phrases and a wide array of other phrases from students that connote similar sentiments regarding engaging in physical activity. This article examines self-determination theory and its application to address lack of motivation and a wide range of physical activity avoidance tendencies.

Abstract Given the stance of education-based sport entities (i.e., NFHS) that sport participation leads to leadership development, this article aims to provide coaches and practitioners several strategies to teach leadership skills anchored in principles from skill acquisition literature. The principles explored include (1) identification of skill abilities, (2) demonstration, (3) verbal instruction, (4) specificity and (5) feedback. Following a continuum describing life skill acquisition (including structuring the sport context, facilitating a positive climate, discussing life skills, and practicing life skills), examples are provided of how to enhance leadership skill development.

Abstract An educator’s teaching styles are essential to the increase in student learning. Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles features 11 teaching styles ranging from a completely teacher-centered approach to a completely student-centered approach. These teaching styles are effective in addressing various student needs. Especially when multiple styles are utilized simultaneously, student learning can be maximized. To assist physical educators’ planning for successful student learning experiences, the authors describe the different teaching styles on Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles, discuss how to best mix them, and share a sample lesson plan for our readers’ reference.

Abstract Outdoor adventure learning not only meets National Physical Education Standards but also has received accolades for its ability to cognitively engage students of all ages. The inclusion of outdoor pursuits and recreational activities has been shown to benefit students physically, socially and emotionally. Yet, few resources exist for physical educators who are interested in including outdoor adventure learning into their curricula. Currently, the resources that are available are tailored to secondary (high school and middle school) settings. Therefore, this article provides elementary-appropriate activity ideas to help physical education teachers capture the benefits of adventure lessons while eliminating barriers such as time, space and money.

Abstract For far too long, recreational programs have put too much emphasis on a traditional model that is not effective for player development and sadly does not allow players to have fun while learning the fundamentals of a sport. A great solution to this problem that encourages five- to seven-year-olds is an approach called Biddy Ball. This article explores the problems with the traditional approach and then gives an overview of the basics and key features of Biddy Ball. Emphasis is placed on young players being provided with opportunities to learn basic skills in a fun, engaging environment.

Abstract Mosston’s spectrum of teaching styles can serve as a guide for teaching and research in physical education. It can also lead to increased academic learning time (ALT), physical activity time, critical thinking, time on task, and fun while participating in softball, especially in one softball variation known as Alaskan Rules Softball. This article describes the rules as well as other variations for Alaskan Rules Softball.
