ABSTRACT We investigated psychological capital (PsyCap) as an antecedent of servant leadership. Findings show that PsyCap was a strong predictor of servant leadership, particularly in counseling students when compared to experienced counseling professionals. Suggestions to develop servant leadership in counseling students, counselors, counselor educators, and supervisors are discussed.

ABSTRACT Black women and infants are up to 3.5 times more likely to die due to birth-related complications than their White and Hispanic counterparts. Research points to complex racial and social inequities, including inadequate perinatal mental health care, as primary contributors to the gap in birth outcomes. During pregnancy, untreated perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are associated with adverse birth outcomes and, therefore, contribute to increased mortality and morbidity risks for Black mothers and their infants. Cultural competency is empirically supported as a framework for reducing racial health disparities. Professional counselors are well-positioned to play a vital role in addressing perinatal mental health disparities impacting Black women. This article provides a contextual overview of the intersecting perinatal medical and mental health disparities affecting Black women and discusses implications for counselor advocacy.

ABSTRACT Gun violence within the United States has become a public health crisis, negatively impacting the wellness of individuals and communities. While professional counseling associations have called upon members to advocate against gun violence, the literature remains sparse. Furthermore, activism can impede counselor wellness, thus, increased self-care and wellness promotion practices are needed. For these reasons, we propose the combined use of the ACA Advocacy Competencies and CSI Wellness Competencies for counselors advocating against gun violence.

Supporting marginalized students in counselor education and supervision programs

ABSTRACT Social justice and advocacy for underrepresented individuals are hallmarks of the counseling profession. Evidence is apparent as counselor education and supervision programs prepare students with leadership skills and dispositions to advocate for individuals, groups, and communities. In addition, students who represent marginalized groups must overcome cultural and systemic barriers to access counselor education programs, advance research, navigate culturally dominant pedagogy, and progress in doctoral programs as well as successive careers. Therefore, it is critical to provide opportunities for marginalized students to feel sought after, supported, and esteemed from recruitment to graduation and beyond. Incorporating existing and well-established programs such as the Holmes Scholars Program, the National Board for Certified Counselors’ Minority Fellowship Program, and the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity provides the needed support for marginalized students to advance the profession’s ideals toward social justice and advocacy.

ABSTRACT Given the steady growth of the Multiracial population and the complexity of what it means to be Multiracial, unique mental health considerations for this minoritized and under-researched population must be considered. As a result, this manuscript will illuminate advocacy action approaches for modifying counseling practice to equip professional counselors with culturally responsive tools that underscore best-practices to create social change.

ABSTRACT In this transcendental phenomenological investigation, we used qualitative research methodology to explore the mentorship experiences and challenges of Black female doctoral students (N = 10). The participants represented the North Central, North Atlantic, and Southern regions of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. Five themes were uncovered as a result of the interviews: (a) gender and ethnic match, (b) desired qualities of the mentoring relationship, (c) support, (d) isolating and negative experiences, and (e) coping and meaning making. We offer suggestions for ways to increase equality within counselor education programs and recommendations for creating mentorship programs in order to provide underrepresented populations professional opportunities and equitable experiences for Black women in counselor education programs.

ABSTRACT This correlational research study explored connections between multidisciplinary biopsychosocial assessment models, namely the Quality of Life model and the Indivisible Self model of wellness, and their utility in assessing psychosocial well-being in cancer survivorship. Both assessment models were found to account for statistically significant variance in depression scores and were found to have more shared variance than unique variance. Implications for utilizing a counseling model of wellness within a cancer context are discussed.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how licensed professional counselors (LPCs) experienced a client death by suicide. Data was collected through interviews with seven LPCs. The following four themes emerged: (1) elements that influenced grief; (2) impact on identities; (3) messages from self and others; and (4) healing strategies. The authors provide suggestions for clinicians, agencies, clinical supervisors, and training programs regarding pre-and-postvention support and advocacy.

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to encourage professional counselors to consider using their counseling competencies outside of the counseling field as servant leaders in organizational settings. The authors identified counseling competencies that both bring support to these servant leadership dimensions and serve as transferable skills within diverse organizational leadership roles. Implications are suggested for graduate programs and the counseling profession.
