ABSTRACT The intensive mothering ideology prescribes the right way to be a mother, limiting a mother’s opportunity to engage in paid work outside of the home. Working mothers face a magnitude of stressors and often struggle to meet the demands of their multiple roles. This phenomenological study examined the experiences of 15 working mothers to understand how they navigate their careers in a culture that place high expectations on mothers.

cABSTRACT Women continue to be underrepresented in leadership roles in counselor education, highlighting a need for leadership development and mentoring initiatives. Drawing on recommendations from the literature, The Women’s Inclusive Mentoring Framework (WIMF) is proposed to address this need. Guided by a relational-cultural approach, the WIMF incorporates quality mentors and mentor-mentee matches, vision and plan development, and focused mentoring interventions. Strengths and limitations of the framework are discussed, along with suggestions for further development.

ABSTRACT Using a matched-control experimental design, this study explored the use of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) with fifty-four counselors in training (CIT). Over the course of 10 weeks CIT self-reported interactions with suicidal clients and their use of counseling skills. Trainees who completed ASIST were significantly more likely to report they had identified and used specific intervention strategies and counseling skills with suicidal clients during sessions. Implications for future training and research are provided.

Female counselors-in-training self-advocate when they disclose inappropriate client sexualized behaviors
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2020-01-02 DOI: 10.1080/2326716x.2020.1729278

ABSTRACT The focus of this study was to determine when and if female counselors-in-training (CITs) will self-advocate (i. e., avoid non-disclosure) when they experience an inappropriate sexual behavior from clients during their field experience training. Quantitative methods were used to gauge CIT sensitivity to and awareness of ICSBs, as well as to calculate frequencies of occurrences. Thematic Analysis was used to better understand descriptions of participants’ experience. Results indicated awareness of ICSBs with limited disclosure and perceived support in supervision, while three response themes emerged, including participants’ internalizing, externalizing, and engaging ICSBs.

ABSTRACT Embedded within the new Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC) are counseling and advocacy interventions at various socioecological levels. School counselors are uniquely positioned to provide such interventions at the institutional level. We integrate the MSJCC with other models relevant to school counselors and provide examples and recommendations for how school counselors can initiate and carry out these seven institutional counseling and advocacy interventions.

ABSTRACT This study illuminates the impact of existing Medicare mental health provider policy on individuals seeking counseling services. The authors applied qualitative content analysis to data provided by members of the American Counseling Association. Two superordinate themes, current Medicare policy encumbers the Medicare-insured and creates a unique hardship on specific client populations are presented in depth in this article, in addition to several emergent themes. The results suggest that current Medicare policy has far-reaching undesirable consequences for the Medicare-insured.

ABSTRACT A strategic sampling of eighteen counselors and counselors-in-training at different points in their professional development participated in a Q methodology design to help researchers better understand participants’ perspectives regarding their own development. The study was framed in the context of Rønnestad and Skovholt’s Lifespan Development Model (LDM). The analysis revealed three factors; two factors coincided with the LDM and one differed. Suggestions to stimulate and promote professional development are presented.
