Abstract Functioning in media discourse as reference points for shaping people’s worldview, sociocultural stereotypes are considered cognitive-linguistic phenomena, formed in the process of evaluative categorization. A lexical item that represents a sociocultural stereotype in media discourse is determined in the study as a nomen of a stereotype. The aim of the paper is to outline strategies of nomen formation that are found in American media discourse. Nomina of stereotypes are formed by phonetic, morphologic, and semantic means. As phonetic means, onomatopoeia creates a nomen on the basis of a sound representation of a stereotyped group. Morphological nomina are conditioned by available in the language through word formation means such as suffixation, compounding, blending, and acronymization. Semantically motivated nomina of sociocultural stereotypes are formed according to logical, allusive, and figurative strategies. Logical strategy is based on the unbiased perception of a social group, regardless of its emotional and evaluative perception. Transference of a well-known name of a figure or an event to a sociocultural stereotype determines allusive strategy. Figurative strategy lies in the sensory portrayal of stereotypes, which takes place according to metaphorical, metonymic, and eponymous patterns. The results of the research can be applied in lexical discourse analysis, media linguistics, and cognitive semantics studies.

Abstract Since the turn of the millennium, the position of women writers in Hungarian literature has changed – they became more and more visible We can speak of a real and increased interest in women’s writing It is important that this change, which is of inclusive character, relates not only to the reconstruction of the literary past of women writers and the re-evaluation of the literary tradition but also to the interest in contemporary authors and their works At the same time, the continuation of previous literary achievements of women is emphasized Following a brief theoretical and historical introduction, the paper offers an analysis of three books written by women writers of the younger generation: Mágneshegy (Magnet Hill, 2018) by Réka Mán-Várhegyi, Évszakhoz képest hűvösebb (Rather Cool for the Time of the Year, 2019) by Anita Harag, and Mély levegő (Deep Breath, 2020) by Rita Halász The paper explores the image of woman that can be found in the analysed texts, examines the social dimension of these texts as well as the ways in which they correspond with and answer to the discourse on social changes in today’s Hungary

Abstract The article pays tribute to four artists of the music scene, i.e. Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, and John Luther Adams. It walks in their footsteps through their autobiographies and features the major landmarks in their artistic and creative evolution. Despite the various incongruent traits in their music style, background, or gender, music autobiographies prove to be valuable assets, based on which correlations and contrasts can be elucidated, the road to growing into an artist can be followed, and the creative spirit can be grasped. We hereby conclude that autobiographies can constitute a bridge towards the artistic soul and deepen the understanding of how these musicians project themselves as performers and position themselves in society.

Abstract Digital competence plays an essential role in the work of teachers in general, and it has its specific challenges regarding language teachers. In their future profession, teachers will need to be able to respond to challenges of the digital world and to develop 21st-century competencies in a conscious, goal-oriented way supported by digital tools. Our survey proposes to map the level of development of digital competence among first-year translation and interpretation students, also enrolled in language teacher training. The tool of the survey was a questionnaire. In compiling the questions, we relied on the digital competence elements of the five competence areas of the European Union DigComp 2.1 reference framework. The results suggest that students’ digital competence level is advanced, but there are areas and competences that require targeted intervention.

Abstract In critical sociolinguistics, language is viewed as a fundamentally social phenomenon that is defined discursively, rather than in terms of individual beliefs and attitudes, and because linguistic practices are themselves intersubjective. Moreover, the broader cultural, historical, and political aspects have also become relevant in the study of language, requiring new ways of addressing sociolinguistic issues. Linguistic ethnography may be a central tool in this inquiry, as it looks at everyday practices in order to understand wider social structures. In this paper, I argue that a festival as a place of encounters provides an adequate context for such research. After discussing the different concepts of the field in doing ethnographic work, I examine the online presence of the festival in question. Tusványos is an event organized in Transylvania every year, with the intention of bringing together Hungarian participants from Hungary and Romania, as well as Romanians.

Abstract The anti-detective novel, Pulp, the last book Charles Bukowski wrote, is among his most significant works. This article illustrates Bukowski’s hostility towards the Enlightenment and modernism Through a postmodern outlook, Bukowski parodies the rationality of the Enlightenment by depicting a world that is replete with irrationality and meaninglessness The narrative involves a drunk detective who takes cases that are highly peculiar and irrational. Bukowski’s detective constantly finds himself in irrational and meaningless conversations and in the author’s attempt to portray the miserable condition of postmodern man Moreover, from an ecocritical perspective, this article asserts that Bukowski is a nihilistic anti-humanist who fails to sympathize with humanity and finds no solution for the environmental collapse that is caused by the disorder in the Anthropocene The only response to the parasitic nature of humanity is hatred and disgust for both himself and his species As a result of his despair with the cause of humanity and anthropocentrism, Bukowski’s Detective Belane is enraged with humans and frequently causes violent scenes

Abstract The study focuses on the peculiar challenges raised by rendering one of Tibor Zalán’s plays into Romanian. We shall take into account the linguistic, aesthetic, and conceptual differences that might emerge in the Romanian translation as compared to its original. The theoretical part of the research is built upon the idea that translation implies “rewriting” (Lefevere 1992) under certain constraints. Being “refracted” texts, translations naturally include not only a change of the language but also a change of the socio-cultural context, a change of the ideology (i.e. the “world view”), and a change of the poetics of the original (Lefevere 1984: 192). Thus, the comparative analysis aims at the major changes operated by the Romanian translator while conveying certain culture-bound meanings.
