Ever since Antoni Miro (b. Alcoi, 1944) started his career in the late 1960s, his extensive artistic production led him to explore a wide range of fields, including painting, sculpture and pottery. For him, one of art’s functions is to serve society, and so in parallel to his regular production he also created posters meant to promote certain art-related events and to show his commitment toward celebrating and spreading culture. In this article we have analyzed several of Miro’s posters, in which he clearly shows his interest in making Catalan culture known in all its shapes and forms. His detailed, continued work is marked by civic references and by the social commitment of an artist who believes that intellectuals have the power to contribute to society and to persuade others. As we can clearly see in his posters, Miro used art to show that he was an independent thinker. Like other artists from his generation (born after Franco won the Civil War), Miro used historical references to express his beliefs. ...

Baltasar Porcel was classified by the Liaison Office of Franco’s government as a writer of “separatist” ideas. This paper details the content of the 1965–1972 Porcel dossier, kept by the repressive Francoist regime, and compares it with a detailed analysis of his non-fiction works during that period. The main purpose of this paper is to present the intellectual project designed by Porcel in a context of new awareness of the situation and a general debate regarding Catalonia’s position and role in Spain. Porcel’s published books (travel, interviews, literary articles, columns, essays) can be used to identify more precisely his ideological affiliation during the late Francoist era. Porcel was clearly not a “separatist”. As a writer and polemicist during that period, Porcel wrote from a sui generis leftist Catalanist perspective, seeking to shape Catalan and Spanish public opinion for two reasons: to systematically demystify bourgeois Catalanism from a more progressive perspective; and to build bridges of di...

St. Agnes of Rome became one of the most celebrated martyrs of the fourth century. Her passion story was popularized by several Church Fathers, most notably Pope Damasus, Prudentius, and Ambrose of Milan. In the Middle Ages, Jacobus of Voragine widely disseminated her hagiography through his Legenda Aurea. St. Vicent Ferrer (1350–1419) dedicated a sermon to her entitled Sancte Agnetis, which he preached in late medieval Catalan. In this sermon he relied very little on Jacobus and the bulk of the previous passion stories about Agnes, which is unusual for Vicent’s hagiographical sermons. Vicent was more interested in promoting the saint’s virginity as a model of holiness for laity and clergy. This article seeks to identify the provenance of the hagiographical material that he did include. It also explores how Vicent proposed the virtue of virginity as a model of holiness to his target audience.

The aim of this paper is to analyze mid vowel segments as pronounced by a group of adolescents who speak Spanish and the Catalan variety of Lleida and whose L1 is Catalan or Roumanian. The analysis is based on a linguistic component related to the phonological contrast of both languages, Catalan and Roumanian, as well as to social and sociolinguistic variables such as gender, the length of time of residence in the welcoming country, and language usage and assessment of the participants in the pronunciation poll. The results show differences in the production between mid vowels [ɛ] and [ɔ] related to: 1) the degree of openness (F1) of the two segments, since vowels articulated by L1 Catalan speakers are the lowest; 2) the distance between the F1 of [e ɛ] and [o ɔ], which is greater in those articulated by L1 Catalan speakers; 3) the length of the vowels, for they are usually shorter in the speech of L1 Catalan speakers. If we add talent, restlessness and creativity to the journalistic and literary vocation of J.V. Foix, and his eagerness to investigate everything “new” without neglecting tradition, he is clearly a universal character with a very significant legacy in our Catalan culture. This article considers the reading of Foix from a perspective in which the printed word and the creative image converge in the artist’s book. In collaboration with prominent artists such as Joan Miro, Joan Ponc and Antoni Tapies, Foix leaves us a legacy in varied and original artist’s books. The work is sometimes the result of a combined effort, and on other occasions it is the visual and poetic testimony of another way of feeling and expressing oneself. In both cases, we will witness how the literary creation of one aspect strengthens and enriches the artistic creation of the other.

Merce Rodoreda’s bleak novel on war, Quanta, quanta guerra… (1980), has inspired multiple readings that have sought coherence in a work that resists logic. Contributing to the text’s rich indeterminacy is its confounding of gender norms and literary genres, which many studies have pinpointed but not linked to Rodoreda’s subject of war. An initial objective in this article is to explore the implications of these ambiguities for the dynamics of conflict. A second, related purpose is to analyze the presence in the work of the fantastic and the uncanny with regard to trauma, an aspect that scholars have not yet developed. I will argue that the fantastic endows unspeakable experiences with tangible shape and raises issues around remembering and disremembering traumatic pasts. The narrative not only abounds in elements derived from the fantastic and the uncanny, such as doubles and reflections, but also privileges important motifs of trauma present in Sigmund Freud’s works, with which Rodoreda was well-acquaint...

The article presents an unpublished text by Joan Fuster Ortells, originally written to appear in the censored volume Dues visions. The reflection, not authorized by the censor – “Per a l’analisi del nacionalisme”, i.e. “For an Analysis of Nationalism” – provides a critical view of Spanish nationalism and of the nation to be legitimized. The novelty of the reflection consists in overcoming the idea of regeneration, characteristic of certain Hispanic elites and denouncing the unionist attitude of Castilian-Spanish politicians and thinkers, as a common trait of progressive, republican, or (philo)fascist visions. The exposition includes the discussion of the essay as an expressive resource – or channel – of ideological literature. Taking the censored text as a starting point, the paper focuses on the social function of the intellectual.

The novelty of the reflection consists in overcoming the idea of regeneration, characteristic of certain Hispanic elites and denouncing the unionist attitude of Castilian-Spanish politicians and thinkers, as a common trait of progressive, republican, or (philo)fascist visions. The exposition includes the discussion of the essay as an expressive resource – or channel – of ideological literature. CATALAN PRONOMINALIZATION AND INFORMATION STRUCTURE: THE ROLE OF PRIMARY ACCENT 加泰罗尼亚语的元音化与信息结构:主口音的作用

Certain aspects of Catalan pronominalization cannot be described without taking into account how informational content is mapped onto sentence structure. In this paper, some data previously considered in the literature (mainly from Todoli’s “Els pronoms”) will be (re)analyzed considering the effects of information packaging articulation in Catalan in order to provide a more unified account. Information structure requirements are relevant for the analysis of the restrictions on pronominalization since, in Catalan, position in sentence structure reflects the pragmatic import of constituents. Viewing clitic binding as a result of a thematization procedure allows for a wider and more coherent approach to pronominalization, since proforms substitute not only for thematic material that is omitted but also for thematic material that is located in dislocated slots.

While the public persona of Caterina Albert i Paradis (1869–1966) maintained the propriety expected of the “senyoreta del poble,” her authorial voice, symbolically named “Victor Catala,” wrote against late nineteenth-century Catalan nation-building rhetoric by addressing such polemical topics as infanticide and domestic strife. Her short story “Pas de comedia” (1948) is representative of the themes that drove her to write under a masculine pen name. In this story, she vividly narrates the travails a prototypical, rural Catalan woman faced while living with a condescending and abusive husband whose animalistic treatment leaves her bruised, but not defeated. Maria, the protagonist, finds encouragement through her supportive neighbors and discovers her own strength to resist and revolt. Through Maria, Albert addresses the grave social problem of domestic violence and works to subvert patriarchal authority and domination. She also points to a solution, which resides both in community involvement and in the fo...

Eugeni Xammar was the Berlin correspondent for newspapers La Veu de Catalunya and La Publicitat from 1922 to 1924 and for Ahora from 1930 to 1936. The Catalan journalist witnessed the events that determined the failure of the Weimar Republic and which, eventually, brought Hitler to power. This article analyzes Eugeni Xammar’s intellectual condition from his discussion of these historical episodes and also from his follow-up on the increasingly decisive power of aesthetics and language of propaganda.
