suggests a framework for understanding Goethe that is vigorously interdisciplinary and international. i conclude by noting that the book is richly illustrated, that it carries its wealth of learning gracefully, and that it is free of professional cant. Graduate students encountering Goethe for the first time (a situation typical of our current academic malaise) should be required to read the book before the start of the seminar, whatever the special topic of that seminar might be. But, as i indicated at the outset, this is also a book from which both specialists and generalists— interested readers all—will draw deep intellectual satisfaction.

With the aid of nicholas saul and the support of the German federal state of sachsen-anhalt, Rommel has also published an illustrated edition of the so-called atlantis fairy tale contained in chapter 3 of Heinrich von Ofterdingen. she is joined in her efforts by the artist Lutz Grumbach, who has worked with the internationale novalis-Gesellschaft since its founding in 1992 on a wide range of projects, including the designs for the catalogue accompanying the 2019–20 exhibit Die Figur des Kindes bei Novalis at schloss oberwiederstedt, whose cover page displays the teacher and his youthful pupils against a backdrop of the temple of isis that is the setting for Die Lehrlinge zu Sais. Rommel and Grumbach even have published two hardcover versions of their latest project. one of them employs black-and-white illustrations by Grumbach that Rommel compares in her introduction to the work of novalis’s contemporary chodwiecki. The second version makes use of the same illustrations but colors them in a way that is certain to delight children of all ages! in fact, either of these two booklets, which can be ordered either directly from the publisher or via the website of the internationale novalis-Gesellschaft, might make fine gifts at the end of a course on novalis or German Romanticism in general.
