ABSTRACT The translation of official personal documents is widely needed and practised. As people migrate physically or virtually for employment and other purposes, millions of personal documents are translated and submitted to public administrations and private companies. This is also one of the areas of translation that is most regulated around the world, with translators often required to sit a test, demonstrate relevant qualifications, and/or be sworn in by the relevant ministry or administration. However, the confidential nature of the source documents often implies that the quality of the corresponding translations can only be assessed by the clients themselves or the institutional staff who process the applications and cases. In this paper, we assess the quality and integrity features of a corpus of translated official personal documents collected in Australia. While the analysis shows a high standard overall, it also reveals areas for improvement.

Sharing the wealth: a proposal for discipline-based repositories of shared educational resources
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2023-08-09 DOI: 10.1080/13603108.2023.2240731

ABSTRACT This essay proposes a novel approach to developing shared educational resources for higher education. Building on characteristics of successful moves to open access in scholarly publishing, it scopes a network of discipline-based cross-institutional hubs for finding, sharing and reusing educational outputs. As well as creating repositories of content, these pilot hubs would help to create structures and processes that allow scholars to share and reuse educational outputs with confidence. The essay considers the broader scholarly and regulatory environment within which these hubs would sit, possible mechanisms for developing the hubs, and the ways in which a richer shared educational environment might benefit academics and students. It acknowledges the tension between the aspirations of ‘open education’ and the more limited version of shared resources proposed, but suggests that establishing conventions and structures is an important stepping stone towards a genuinely open educational environment.

Mainstreaming the alternative format thesis in UK higher education: a systematic narrative review of institutional policies

ABSTRACT The alternative format PhD, in which doctoral candidates produce a thesis composed of a series of peer reviewed publications, is growing in popularity internationally. However, across the HE (HE) system in the United Kingdom (UK), universities have been slower to adopt the alterative thesis format. This paper presents a systematic narrative review to understand the development of institutional-level policies pertaining to the alternative thesis format across UK HE institutions (n = 135), identifying best practice and opportunities for improvement. The paper evidences a fragmented policy landscape in which there is a notable lack of consistent and coherent policy and guidance across institutions, that may in fact compound existing inequalities in doctoral provision. Recommendations are made to encourage the design of institutional policies that support PhD candidates to opt for the alterative format thesis where appropriate, with wide ranging implications for the HE sector.

‘You’re in the wrong seat’: exploring the manifestation of power in higher education governance through the lens of student governors “你坐错位置了”:通过学生管理者的视角,探索高等教育治理中权力的表现

ABSTRACT Students who serve on the governing body of UK and Irish higher education institutions often report challenges due to a perceived power dynamic. This study explored the perspectives of power among current and former student governors (n = 14). This research highlighted the importance of power and its role in determining the influence (or lack of) held by various governing body members. With limited experience of the corporate environment, students hold less power than other governors, particularly external members, and senior managers whose capital is better aligned to these spaces. Though student governors seek empowerment from other members, this research highlights an overreliance on personal relationships at the expense of building an institutional culture that values student governors and commits to supporting their engagement through training and mentoring. Several practical recommendations are proposed – highlighting how governing body chairs, other governors and university staff can support students to overcome established power dynamics.

Drivers of the global push for microcredentials in higher education: flexibility and employability in contemporary university systems

ABSTRACT The recent emergence of microcredentials, short courses leading to accreditation with an emphasis on work-aligned skills, is worthy of note due to its speed, scale and accompanying endorsement from governments and influential non-state actors worldwide. This paper analyses the reasons for this rapid growth which have been proposed in academic literature and policy documents, revealing a set of drivers associated with neoliberalism’s impact on higher education systems, such as the increasing demand for universities to offer vocational learning leading to improved employability outcomes. Beyond this, the global microcredentials landscape speaks to a wider conception of modern labour markets as markedly unstable and requiring great flexibility to navigate. The paper concludes with recommendations for higher education management practice in response to the microcredential boom in light of its underlying character.
