Abstract The purpose of the current research was to investigate Facebook discontinuance intentions in the Library and Information Science environment. The research model, building on the Theory of Planned Behavior, incorporated overload, fatigue, and self-efficacy, to understand the drivers behind users’ intention to stop using Facebook (either permanently or intermittently) or replace it with another social medium. Overall, the results suggest that participants are unlikely to abandon Facebook either on a permanent or a temporary basis, at least in the near future. Furthermore, users’ discontinuance intentions are primarily associated with evaluations about the consequences of their choice to abandon the medium.

next steps will be to track success of these efforts and also consider new methods. Tracking spreadsheets for resource title, permalink, image (if applicable), description, and method of promotion are in place over a calendar for easy referral. There is also a spreadsheet that tracks the usage of each resource before, during, and after the resource has been promoted. The hope is to observe an increase in usage, but there may be a need to put effort into different promotion methods if no correlation between promotion and usage is observed. Future potential website promotion methods include using website banners, and implementing suggested resources through our discovery layer. In conclusion, using the library website in new ways can be a low-barrier and cost-effective way to promote electronic resources. These methods may require conversations with stakeholders and implementation of new processes, but once set require manageable time dedication.

Denise A. Garofalo,
The galaxy of electronic resources (i.e. all of the materials in digital format and accessible electronically, also known as e-resources) is the focus of much of the responsibilities of librarians and library staff today. Whether we are curating materials for the library’s collection, providing and maintaining the technological infrastructure that allows users to use e-resources, or assisting said users in how to access and use the research databases, ebooks, ejournals, streaming services, and so on, we find ourselves shaped and influenced by this ever-changing realm. Let’s focus on just one of the inhabitants of this domain—streaming media.

Abstract This study examines the effectiveness of the COUNTER 5 metrics relating to e-book usage reporting. Through three simulated processes on two major e-book platforms, EBSCOhost and ProQuest Ebook Central, the authors were able to gain insights into how usage was counted at item level within each e-book platform. The study finds that both vendors followed the principles of COUNTER 5 standard in usage reporting. Nevertheless, the result of data analysis also suggests that the difference in platform design between the two vendors had a direct impact on how usage was counted, thus affected the total outcome of e-book usage reports.

Denise A. Garofalo,
With all the changes and stresses of the past couple of years, coupled with the impact of fiscal uncertainties (such as still-unfilled positions from COVID-related layoffs), many libraries are continuing to deal with vacant positions and all that those situations entail. For every librarian, not just electronic resources librarians but also all your colleagues, we may be struggling. Besides the challenges of having additional responsibilities assigned to you, and trying to learn and succeed at all the tasks, you may be seeking guidance and support to accomplish everything. That being said, have you considered looking for a mentor/mentoring? Whether that mentor is part of a formal program or something more informal, there are benefits to having a support system of someone outside your immediate situation to turn to when you have questions, feel overwhelmed, or just want to vent.

Abstract Academic libraries are engaged in the process of assessing the impacts the COVID-19 health pandemic has had on the use of the electronic resources their institutions provide. Trends related to e-resource use prior to and during the pandemic at a small academic library and within its consortium are discussed. The results of this assessment dispel the assumptions behind a hypothesis that licensed online resources would see greater use in supporting instruction and research as institutions pivoted to online-only course delivery in the early months of the pandemic. Some potential underlying factors that may be leveraged to inform strategic collection development, information literacy, and service changes are explored.
