Over the last few decades, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) countries have increased their spending on education (Bertoni et al., 2018) significantly. Governments have raised the salaries of teachers to signal the importance of education and to attractmore students to select the teaching profession. Likewise, many reforms and programmes have been introduced to improve learning, especially in disadvantaged schools and areas. The available data suggest that increased spending combined with economic and social reforms have had an impact on educational outcomes such as improvement on primary and secondary completion rates and a slowly declining number of very poor performers. There has also beenmodest but sustained progress in closing the learning gap with more developed countries. However, education systems in LAC countries still lag significantly behind most developed countries in terms of student performance in international assessments, which illustrates persistent learning gaps. To guarantee that this slow progress in LAC countries would continue, we need to increase the amount of multidisciplinary collaboration in school development. One crucial aspect of the development of school and education is that the reforms should be based on tested ideas and solid research. Therefore, a constant dialogue between research and practice is required. To advance this discussion, we built this particular issue by inviting top experts from seven LAC countries to present the state-of-the-art situation in their countries. We focus on the current state of research in numerical cognition and how this new knowledge has or could contribute to educational practices. Naturally, raising the research on numerical cognition into focus for developing education and educational practices is a narrow perspective when we consider all the factors connected to learning and teaching. In Figure 1, we present a simplified influence diagram to put our question dealt with in this special issue in a broader context. The figure illustrates the complex and multifactorial nature of the whole topic as a research area.

Abstract Given the emphasis that the notion of competence has acquired in both organizational and educational contexts, the purposes of this article are, first, to outline a brief history of the emergence of this notion through its main definitions and some of the problematizations that have been put forward on its use, highlighting underlying conceptions and limitations, while considering aspects related to the conjuncture of their emergence and diffusion; and second, based on the Theory of Subjectivity developed by González Rey from a cultural-historical perspective, to present, based on its central concepts, contributions that will help us progress in the understanding of the processes that the notion of competence is intended to describe, considering the limitations its hegemonic use presents. Among the contributions presented, it is the concept of subjective configuration of action that allows us to advance in the understanding of the constitutive complexity of competence, bridging the dichotomy between social and individual dimensions.

Abstract In this article, I discuss psychotherapy from the perspective of the theory of subjectivity proposed by González Rey. This practice focuses on the understanding and possibilities of changing processes of both individual subjectivity and social subjectivity. Dialogue is a central process for configuring psychotherapy as a mobilizing space for different subjective productions. Psychotherapy is not defined by the place in which it occurs, but by the different subjective processes that emerge in living this experience. Construction and interpretation are processes that accompany psychotherapists in their professional action and theoretical production. From the perspective of subjectivity, the process of psychotherapy is oriented to the way in which different subjective configurations are organized in the person’s experience and in the different developments in areas of his life. The idea of subjective configuration is not based on a universal model of human standardization, nor on categories that define a priori what is normal or pathological in relation to human development and health processes. It is a category that allows one to follow the procedural nature of the constitution of what is lived.

Abstract Recovering the person’s place as a producer of subjectivity is essential to ensuring that development processes are not theorized in a depersonalized, fragmented and isolated manner. Based on the theoretical, epistemological and methodological legacy raised by the researcher Fernando González Rey on subjectivity, the objective of this article is to promote other forms of intelligibility development, based on the concept of subjective development, which allow us to highlight the generative character of the person. Subjective development is marked by the unprecedented nature of the subjective senses, as a force that stresses the system and that can mobilize new subjective configurations or reconfigurations. The complexities and challenges of investigation, guided by Qualitative Epistemology, are also discussed in this article, highlighting the unprecedented and unpredictable role of development, aspects that, when welcomed and legitimized, stress the processes that have been historically perceived to be pathological by society, even by the field of psychology itself.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to present and discuss certain fundamental biographical and theoretical aspects in the proposal and development of Fernando González Rey’s Theory of Subjectivity. Thus, it highlights his early participation in the Cuban Revolution, the first advances in his studies (1968–73), his concern surrounding the study of Personality (1973–97) and, finally, his development of the Theory of Subjectivity and Qualitative Epistemology (1997–2019). We specifically highlight the critical dialogue with cultural-historical psychology, especially with L. Bozhovich and L. Vygotsky. We also outline his main theoretical concepts related to the Theory of Subjectivity. Finally, his Theory of Subjectivity is analysed as a complex ‘macro-theory’, with a critical and subversive vocation, open to the generation of new spaces of intelligibility that facilitate the study of the creative and generative character of human phenomena.

Abstract This paper falls within González Rey’s line of thought. Its objective is to present and discuss the heuristic value of Qualitative Epistemology and constructive-interpretative methodology, aimed at the study of subjectivity, for the social sciences and humanities, with an emphasis on psychology. To achieve this purpose, the epistemological and methodological pillars of González Rey’s proposal are presented, which revitalize science as a living and creative production by recovering the researcher as a subject of knowledge production. This proposal is supported by three main epistemological principles: singularity as a legitimate source of production of scientific knowledge; dialogicity; and the constructive-interpretative nature of knowledge. From this perspective, the method abandons its universal abstraction and standardization to become a living dimension, which expresses the researcher’s ability to dialogically organize their own questions, reflections and actions in the world.

Abstract This article represents an attempt to advance theoretically in the dialogue between two themes that have become increasingly popular in the fields of psychology and education within historical-cultural psychology: funds of identity and subjectivity. Although these relatively new lines of research can advance within a framework of symbolic-affective processes of the human phenomenon, sharing the focus of development as one of their convergent characteristics, there are also notable divergences between both approaches. To resolve these tensions, we put forward the theoretical approach called Funds of Identity within a subjective ontology, which proposes transcending the division between negative or positive emotions, and the idea of the accumulation of life experiences, towards positions of greater complexity, where life experiences are understood to be a stream of senses and subjective configurations.

Abstract The singularity of the other, based on González Rey’s subjectivity, opens up the possibility in Sports Psychology of exploring the topic of the female body configured within the subjective experience of participating in Paralympic high-performance sports. In this way, we can consider sports and body practices to be spaces of transgression, where subjectively produced sports experience translates into a form of affirmation of female participation. Using the constructive-interpretative method, the case study of an outstanding Cuban Paralympic high-performance female athlete facilitated the construction of alternative ways of producing knowledge based on singularity and empathic dialogue. The sport is built as a multidimensional field, which has continued to be a spectacle, where the reproduction of an aesthetic and behavioural pattern on the concept of ‘what a woman should be’ – beyond an aesthetically shaped body based on normality – has also been reinforced. The research carried out has allowed us to reflect on reinterpretation processes of the sports experience where the productions of the order of subjectivity are brought to life.
