The article presents the study on the factors influencing appearance of loneliness at female prisoners. The results obtained indicate that loneliness is caused not only by subjective factors, such as personal traits, needs, motives, but also by an objective factor - the socially closed structure of detention places and the limited environment there. The article describes the psychological study determining the factors that support fundamental assumptions of students with disabilities. We have determined correlations between psychological hardiness of students with disabilities and their system of fundamental assumptions; beliefs in the benevolence of the surrounding world and people, in the meaningfulness of some events, in a chance to build successfully one’s own life and in one’s own luck have a significant influence on psychological hardiness. The predictors of psychological hardiness of students with disabilities are: positive interactions with the outside world; self-acceptance as a conscious acceptance of various aspects of one’s own personality; personal autonomy, which allows an individual to independently determine their own behaviour, assess adequately their capabilities and resist external influences.

Dear authors, members of the editorial board, and readers of the scientific interdisciplinary journal Social Welfare: Interdisciplinary Approach. We present to you one more issue of the journal. As in previous issues, in the present issue, an interdisciplinary approach to social welfare in a national and intercultural context is important to us. In this issue, we present to your attention the works of scientists from three countries in one way or another related to social welfare, the concept of which is constructed and presented in three chapters: Social Challenges, The Development of Professional Competences and Disability Studies. Going deeper into the presented scientific works, it can be seen that in many of them we can name social justice as the main idea. This scientific concept and the starting point of the formation of the concept of life has reached us from ancient times. All of us know Plato, Socrates’ disciple, and his ontological concept of justice related to a virtue of the soul. Justice for Plato is one of the major virtues that encompasses both state governance and human life in general. It can be argued that he saw the benefits of justice in the life of the state and the individual, including the idea that justice unites society (Plato, 2000[1]). Aristotle gives justice the meaning of redistribution and sharing. On the other hand, although Aristotle’s justice is restricted to Greek citizens, in any case, the idea of sharing, redistributing, offsetting was spread thanks to Aristotle (Aristotle, 1990[2]). Thomas Aquinas not only linked the Christian tradition to the teaching of Aristotle, but also further developed the idea of justice and emphasized the importance of transposing the idea into law (Aquinas, 2015[3]). Immanuel Kant developed a moral theory which, in the context of our days, is, in my view, an important duty as the strongest pillar of morality (Kant, 1987[4]). Without going into polemic about how much Immanuel Kant’s philosophy influenced John Rawls’ theory of social justice, I will quote the principles of justice defined by him: “a) each person is to have an equal right to the most extensive scheme of equal basic liberties compatible with a similar scheme of liberties for others; and in this scheme the equal political liberties, and only those liberties, are to be guaranteed their fair value. b) Social and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are both: (a) to the greatest benefit of the least advantaged, consistent with the just savings principle, and (b) attached to offices and positions open to all under conditions of fair equality of opportunity” (Rawls, 2002, p. 61[5]). It can be said that Rawls’ idea that we will not achieve social welfare in the state until justice, including social justice, is ensured, has laid the foundations for a modern understanding of social justice. The article analyses the content of the activity of child rights protection on-call specialists, their experiences related to the representation of the child and his/her interests. In Lithuania, this position is new and it emerged after the reform of the child rights protection system, which was caused by the increase in cases of violence against children, which resulted in their death several times. The activity of on-call specialists is focused on making quick decisions in response to reports of violations of children’s rights in the family and society.Qualitative research revealed the experience of on-call specialists in relation to the assessments of violations of children’s rights in daily activities and the reactions of parents/ guardians to the assistance provided by on-call specialists.

The article represents the research, analysed the reviewing of defensive mechanisms and coping strategies in the context of the mental health of pre-school children of different gender. The results obtained through study point to differentiation of psychological defence and coping strategies mechanisms based on gender and the condition of mental health. It is revealed that mentally healthy pre-school age children prefer to use effective and socially upheld coping-strategies, which reduce the pressure through socially upheld behaviour patterns (e.g., through the decent “children’s activity” – play, walk and etc.). Mentally healthy girls more often focus on overcome the difficulties within themselves. Boys, who have emotional symptoms, as usual prefer the destructive emotional expression strategy, that lets to ease the tension. Boys with the low level of anxiety are oriented to the passive distraction, while girls focus on the social contacts. Received results can be used for development of psychological prevention of mental health offences programmes

The dynamics of morbidity and prevalence of diseases among the children’s population in Ukraine in recent years has multi-directional trends – an increase in the incidence and prevalence of diseases among children 7-14 years and adolescent children, and the reduction of the morbidity of children of the first year of life, the incidence and prevalence of diseases among children 0- 6 years. The decrease of the morbidity and increase of the prevalence of diseases with age was revealed. At the beginning of the 21st century, the problem of maternal and child health has become one of the priorities of public health protection in the world and was included by the United Nations in the Millennium Development Goals List. Ukraine is designated by the WHO European Regional Committee as a pilot region for the implementation of the Strategy “Health and Development of Children and Adolescents”. A data on children with disabilities in Ukraine are rare and do not give a general idea of the link between morbidity and disability, and because that information is available only by regions, not nosological forms, it can not provide a general picture of morbidity/ disability of young people in order to develop organizational measures to reduce that. The general objective of the Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for 2017-2023 is to "shift the paradigm" from the traditional medical approach to disability to a human rights-based approach: independence, freedom of choice, full participation, equality, human dignity and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. The effective participation of people with disabilities in all spheres of life and society as a whole is crucial for the realization of all human rights and the formation of their life perspective in Ukraine.

The article deals with the reconstruction of the context of coping with occupational stress experienced by social welfare specialists in different socio-cultural environments. It is aimed to reveal the contexts of the possibilities to cope with stress and of consequences of stress experienced by specialists of social welfare professions of Lithuania and Great Britain (N=10). The professionals’ experience was analysed using a qualitative data collection method (semi-structured interview), employing open-ended questions by the assessment areas foreseen by the researchers and formulated upon the analysis of scientific literature and the authors’ research, disclosing the peculiarities of experienced occupational stress and possibilities of coping with it. The research data were analysed employing the content analysis method, using the open coding procedure; validation of the research data was performed using an expert method. Reconstruction of the multilayered context of socio-cultural diversity of social welfare specialists of Lithuanian and Great Britain highlighted ambiguous semantics of stress coping possibilities: the success of coping with occupational stress possibly depends on the interaction between the variables of a personality (intrapersonal) and social environment (interpersonal). Stressful situations affect both personally and professionally, causing changes in specialists’ emotions, cognitive activity, behaviour, aggravating relationships with colleagues and reducing work efficiency.

Reconstruction of the multilayered context of socio-cultural diversity of social welfare specialists of Lithuanian and Great Britain highlighted ambiguous semantics of stress coping possibilities: the success of coping with occupational stress possibly depends on the interaction between the variables of a personality (intrapersonal) and social environment (interpersonal). The present study investigated whether there are gender differences in how perceived use of relationship maintenance strategies by a partner is linked to subject’s relationship satisfaction in a Lithuanian sample. The sample consisted of 472 participants in committed romantic relationship, including 389 women and 83 men with a mean age of 21.89 years. The sample included 232 participants in dating relationship, 216 cohabiting and 24 married. Mean relationship duration was 31.91 months. Stafford’s (2011) Relationship Maintenance Behaviors Measure was used to assess relationship maintenance, while relationship satisfaction was measured by Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI-32) of Funk and Rogge (2007). Results of the study indicated that women perceived their partners using more positivity, understanding, assurances, sharing tasks, and social network strategies than men did. While no statistically significant gender differences in relationship satisfaction were found, all relationship maintenance strategies were positively correlated with relationship satisfaction for both men and women. However, strategies contributing towards prediction of relationship satisfaction differed for men and women. For women, relationship satisfaction was best predicted by perceived assurances, followed by understanding, positivity, and self-disclosure, which collectively accounted for just under 40% of variance in relationship satisfaction. For men, only perceived partner’s positivity was significant predictor of relationship satisfaction, but it alone accounted for 51.6 percent of variance in relationship satisfaction. Neither relationship status nor relationship duration were significant in predicting relationship satisfaction of either men or women.
