This paper presents research findings on historical vernacular half-timbered architecture. The study covered the general area of Szczecin and extended to older-generation buildings constructed before the mid-nineteenth century. Ethnological maps from the first half of the twentieth century that depicted the border of two large areas with differing vernacular culture characteristics served as a basis for discussion. This difference concerned not only the forms of houses, but most importantly manifestations of folk culture. A description of the historical fishing village of Mścięcino, located between Szczecin and Police, proved crucial to the investigation. The research showed that there had been attempts to create recreational villages in the vicinity of Szczecin at the turn of the twentieth century.

The article presents research on the architecture and construction of wooden churches in the Lubuskie voivodeship, which form a large group of historical buildings. Some of them are monuments of high rank, both in terms of age and stylistic value, design solutions and equipment. The remaining ones are characterized by the common historical value of the wooden cultural heritage, which emphasizes the role of the local building tradition and the originality of the log and half-timbered architecture. The article presents seven types of wood and characterizes each of them. All researched monuments are under conservation protection. Most of them are renovated on an ongoing basis, and a few have undergone complete conservation, revalorization and revitalization in recent years.

Cities are under threat from the effects of climate change. The consequences of climate change will primarily affect rivers in the form of increased droughts and floods. In view of global warming, protecting and restoring rivers should be a priority, along with reducing pollution. Strategic urban planning and engineering solutions, while playing an important role in climate change adaptation, will also improve forecasting and contribute to risk avoidance through planning controls.

The essence of urban design is the transformation of the environment in a way that maximizes the quality of human life. The tools to achieve this goal must cope with the complexity of natural and urbanized spaces, and designers use them to anticipate future environmental states. The article presents theoretical considerations, supplemented by the practical implementation of the area in the Swarzędz community, on the relationship between the organization of urban design in the context of multi-level integration (planning, design) and the emergence of a high-quality urban environment. This process requires controlling many parallel threads between which there are dynamic changes in the relationship - the holarchy.

In the period of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and, most importantly, of threat to world peace, humanitarian and rational multi-family housing could contribute to stabilizing the economic and social situation. This appears particularly essential in a situation of the fast-approaching land shortage for housing in cities. In this paper, the author discusses the size of usable apartment space and the quality of functional and spatial layouts understood in terms of their physical reach. The economic aspect associated with the amount of construction material used was noted. The above could contribute to the discussion on the future development trajectory of multi-family housing.

The article discusses the history of the transport and industrial zone development, which was formed around the central railway station of the city of Dnipro. This area is significant because it has a direct connection with the city center. Changes in the industrial structure of the country and the city, global challenges and modern trends contribute to the transformation of these territories into the center of business and social activity of the city, as well as the region.

In the last decade, the increasing popularity of neuroscience has involved architecture. Both neuroscientists and architects have endeavoured to understand how the experience of architecture works from the standpoint of cognitive functioning. This has been possible thanks to the neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI and discoveries like mirror neurons. These researches, despite their outstanding quality, are difficult to implement for what concerns the practice of architectural design. However, there is a common ground where architectural theory, phenomenology and neuroscience intersect, represented by empathy, embodiment, and emotion. They are the frame of the awareness of space and the counterpart of the visual perception. The main goal of design is to make the living space but to take a meaning, it has to be the “negative” of the human body. This process comes into existence through “old” tools, i.e. the mentioned empathy, embodiment, and emotion. Still, they can get a new meaning if their traditional hermeneutic is blended with the latest knowledge provided by neurosciences.

The article presents research on the conscious shaping of the space of martyrology objects, cemeteries and crematoriums in Europe. In his research, the author focused on the elements of architectural and urban composition, as well as spatial treatments experienced by users on three levels: pre-narrative, proton-narrative and procedural narratives of the unconscious (Dimaggio, Semerari, 2001, 14: 1-23), as based solely on the user's sensual experience. Selected elements influencing the user were divided into three categories: inducing action, focusing attention or inducing a reaction, and building awareness of space.

During the period of the difficult birth and development of Polish statehood and the formation of the national spirit in the lands of present-day Ukraine, architecture became an important marker for these tendencies. For centuries, these structures had been built at the point of contact between Latin and Eastern cultures. Christian churches of the Eastern rite – wooden Orthodox churches – were the most numerous, right after wooden Latin churches, group of religious buildings in Poland, and are the largest in present-day Ukraine. In comparison to Latin churches, the forms of Orthodox ones are much more diverse. The research conducted by the author in the years 1989-2002 made it possible to identify many of the most valuable orthodox churches in Western Ukraine. Today remains only hope that the current Russo-Ukrainian war will not deplete this priceless cultural heritage.

Shaping an ecologically conscious society is a process that also affects architecture. Currently, designers are eagerly looking for solutions that are beneficial in terms of carbon footprint. For the proper multi-criteria assessment and selection of adequate solutions, it is necessary to use appropriate tools such as, for example, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method or the rules of ecological certification (BREEAM and LEED). The work presents a review of tools and methods for the objective selection of ecological solutions in the process of architectural design.
