Objective: Comorbidities accompanying to cardiac disorders might be as detrimental as the diseases themselves. While it is not common, comorbidities associated with inner ear functions may also be seen. This study was planned to investigate evaluation of hearing which also includes high frequencies, and the presence of vestibular and tinnitus symptoms in children with acute rheumatic fever (ARF), Kawasaki disease (KD) or who underwent open heart surgery (due to atrial septal defect and/or ventricular septal defect, Tetralogy of Fallot). Methods: This study included a patient group including 214 children patients diagnosed with cardiac disorders (116 males, 98 females; mean age 9.70 [range 6-16]) and a control group including 44 healthy children who do not have any kind of chronic disease (21 males, 23 females; mean age 9.38 [range 6-16]). The subjects underwent hearing test with frequencies between 250-20000 Hz, vestibular and tinnitus symptoms were evaluated by Symptom Questionnaire Forms. Results: Out of 214 patients in the patient group, 6 (2.8%) had hearing loss in pure tones, 25 (11.7%) had in high frequencies, 35 (16.4%) had tinnitus symptoms, and 21 (9.8%) had vertigo symptoms. Hearing loss in high frequencies was detected in 11.7% of patients with ARF, in 22.7% of patients with KD, and in 7.8% of patients who underwent open heart s urgery. The difference between KD patients and the control group in terms of hearing loss was statistically significant (p=0.014). Out of 214 patients in the patient group, 4 (1.9%) h ad hearing loss in pure tones and high frequencies, vertigo and tinnitus symptoms. Conclusions: Our results suggest that some childhood cardiac disorders can cause some changes in the inner ear, although the exact cause is unknown. Perhaps, a detailed hearing and balance examination should be a routine in a child diagnosed with a cardiac disorders. We think it is necessary to work on more comprehensive patient groups and tests in the future . .

Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and eosinophil-lymphocyte ratio (ELR) of allergic rhinitis patients and compare our findings with healthy controls. We also analyzed the effect of severity of allergic rhinitis on hematological parameters and total IgE levels of the patients. Methods: A total of forty-six patients diagnosed having allergic rhinitis according to Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) criteria and forty-six healthy, age and sex-matched subjects were included in this study. The clinical records of the patients were retrospectively analyzed and age, gender, skin prick test results, complete blood counts, total IgE levels and Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT) 22 scores were recorded for assessment of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and eosinophil-lymphocyte ratio (ELR) of the patients. Results: Eosinophil count, eosinophil percentage and ELR value of the study group were significantly higher than the control group. (p=0,001, p=0,001, p=0,001 respectively) The cut-off value for ELR was ≥0,105. (sensitivity=0,61, specificity=0,76, AUC=0,703) Total IgE levels of patients with positive skin prick test were significantly higher than patients with negative skin prick test. (p=0,019) The cut-off value for total IgE was ≥63 IU/mL. (sensitivity=0,59, specificity=0,74, AUC=0,706). Conclusion: ELR is a valuable marker for predicting allergic rhinitis. However, it does not correlate with the severity of the disease. Total IgE levels increase in patients with positive skin prick tests. Also, total IgE level does not correlate with the severity of allergic rhinitis.

Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine how attachment of the uncinate process superiorly (SAUP) relates to possession of an agger nasi cell, pneumatisation of the middle turbinate and the measurements of the base of the skull anteriorly. The study was carried out using computerised tomography (CT). Methods: The study involved CT imaging captured from 727 individuals with persistent sinusitis- 1454 images in total, featuring coronal section of the paranasal sinus. The frequency of SAUP, existence of an agger nasi cell, pneumatisation of the middle turbinate and how high the lamella measured laterally, were all noted. Landsberg and Friedman’s classification scheme for SAUP was utilised. Statistical analysis used the chisquared test. Results: In 1.65% of cases, SAUP was not identifiable. With regard to class of SAUP, the most frequent was type 2, then, in descending order of frequency, types 1, 4, 3, 5 and 6. The frequencies noted were 27.6%, 19.8%, 15.4%, 14.5%, 12.0% and 9.0%, respectively. An agger nasi cell was visualised in 894 images (61.07%). There was pneumatisation of the middle turbinate in 395 images (27.17%). The lamina cribrosa measured 5.58mm on average. Conclusion: There were significant correlations between the type of SAUP and the existence of agger nasi cells or of concha bullosa. However, the type of SAUP was not statistically significant in predicting the height of the lamina cribrosa.

Objectives: Bronchiectasis typically manifests with persistent coughing, pus-filled discharge, lethargy, dyspnoea, sternal pain, haemoptysis and dilated airways. Such symptoms can adversely affect the quality of life and voice characteristics of sufferers from bronchiectasis. This study had as its objective the objective comparison of vocal differences between healthy children and those with bronchiectasis. Methods: The parameters examined were jitter, percentage jitter, shimmer, noise-to-harmonics ratio (NHR), voice turbulence index (VTI), and soft phonation index (SPI). Data from the cases and controls were compared by means of paired t-tests. Results: The mean age for the cases was 11.53 years. In terms of absolute jitter, percentage jitter, shimmer and SPI, no differences were detected at the level of statistical significance. However, the NHR and VTI did differ between cases and controls at the level of statistical significance. Conclusion: The research reveals that a holistic approach has an influence on patient outcomes. Sufferers from bronchiectasis experience vocal alterations, especially with respect to NHR and VTI, the values of which were raised in comparison with healthy controls.

Purpose: This study aimed to elucidate how histopathological findings relate to the existence of metastases in lymph nodes in a cohort of surgical cases with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. Material and Methods: A cohort of cases from the ENT department, who had partial or total laryngectomy and dissection of the neck in the period spanning January 2008 to June 2017 were evaluated retrospectively. 150 cases were deemed appropriate for inclusion in the study. The histopathological notes and clinical findings of these cases were compared to each other. Findings: The glottic group had lower levels of lymphovascular invasion (p<0.05). Tumours staged at T3 or T4 level or endophytic in subtype were, however, more likely to have lymphovascular invasive features (p<0.05). For neoplasms with a high degree of differentiation, it was less frequent to observe invasion of lymphatics, metastasis to the cervical nodes or invasion beyond the capsule (p<0.05). Perineural invasion was not associated with a greater risk of the neoplasm metastasizing to the cervical lymphovasculature, but invasion of the lymphatics did signal an increase in metastasis (p<0.05). Conclusion: Cervical lymphatic metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx has a high degree of correlation with histopathological grading.

OBJECTIVE To compare the histological regeneration characteristics of open wound on head neck by a topical antiseptic solution (Batticon ® solution 5%; Adeka, Samsun, Turkey ) or a tissue adhesive (N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, Glubran 2, GEM Company, Italy) in experimentally created rabbit auricular open wound. MATERIAL AND METHOD Twenty-eight female rabbits (New Zealand genus), weighing 3 to 4 kg, were handled daily for 2 weeks prior to surgical manipulation to condition them to behavior testing. The control group consisted of seven rabbits. The 21 rabbits were randomly divided into three groups based on the harvesting day. In control group a segment of ear auricula was resected and sent to histological examination for comparison with the study group findings. In the study group both auricular skin of each animal was exposed and 1x1 cm epidermal resection area was created open wound in rabbit ears that is to be a model for open tissue injury and applied as a topical antiseptic solution (Batticon ® solution 5%; Adeka, Samsun, Turkey) on one side and by application of tissue adhesive (Glubran 2, GEM Company, Italy) on the other side. Following this application at 2 nd , 4 th and 6th days the animals were harvested and histological regeneration characteristics of open wound examined by electron microscopy and compared to the control group’s histological findings. RESULTS Electron microscopic examination of open wound at consecutive 2 nd , 4 th and 6 th days revealed increased regeneration findings in tissue adhesive group when compared to a antiseptic solution group. CONCLUSION Based on the findings of this animal study we conclude that N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate is an appropriate material for open wound on head and neck region.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma is potentially an important health problem for white people. The incidence of melanoma is rising faster than other solid cancers. Despite the new melanoma drugs surgery for localised melanoma and regional metastasis is still the standard of care. However, management of cutaneous melanoma differs from other cancers at some points such as biopsy technique, surgical margine, incorporation ofsentinel lymph node biopsy for staging etc. In this review, we focused on the role of the head and neck surgeon in the management of cutaneous melanoma of head and neck region according to current knowledge.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the the study was to compare CT-obtained measures related to the cross-sectional area of the airway at various points (nasal valve, mid-nasal cavity, choanal, retro-lingual and retro-uvulal) in cases of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) with their values in normal controls. Such abnormal values may act as markers of risk for OSA. METHODS: CT (computerised tomographic) imaging from 27 cases of OSA attending the Otorhinolaryngology Dept. of the Adana City Training and Research Hospital were evaluated retrospectively, alongside 9 normal controls. RESULTS: T he means of the nasal valve and choanal cross sectional areas differed from the normal control means at the level of statistical significance (p=0.019 and p=0.012, respectively). CONCLUSION: The authors hypothesize that the area of the nasal valve and the choanae have a bearing on the likelihood of developing OSA, but state that further research involving larger populations is needed to draw firm conclusions.

CONCLUSION: The authors hypothesize that the area of the nasal valve and the choanae have a bearing on the likelihood of developing OSA, but state that further research involving larger populations is needed to draw firm conclusions.","PeriodicalId":41744,"journal":{"name":"ENT Updates","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45843373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study aimed to evaluate the long term results of our previous study. In the previous study, we found that temporomandibular joint disorders(TMJDs) are related to habitual prone sleeping position and nasal septal deviation. Of 200 participants 104 patients were diagnosed as TMJD. After five years we evaluated 101 of 104 patients by means of TMJD sympthoms. By these years 27 of 65 patients with nasal septal deviation had gone to septoplasty. And we saw that 24 of this 27 improved (88.8%). Additionally, 27 of 50 patients who changed their habitual sleeping position also improved (54%). This study showed that correcting nasal septal deviation and habitual prone sleeping position improves temporomandibular joint disorder sympthoms.
