Since Slovakia was part of the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918, Slovakian historians are not the only ones who do research on the history and the source material of this territory. The sources of the Roman Curia concerning this territory were published within different projects, some of which are older (Monumenta Vaticana historiam Regni Hungariae illustrantia), others more recent (Monumenta Vaticana Slovaciae). Sources from different local archives appeared in various other editions. At the moment a complex historical portal www.PamMap.sk is being designed, in which the sources of the Roman Curia, among others, will be prepared multilingually with images and metadata for a broader community.

ENGLISH: The article highlights the relations between Italian medieval studies and digital humanities, starting from researches conducted on Vatican documents and other ecclesiastical sources since the 1980s; then it goes on to discuss some more recent projects, based on various types of sources. A multi-faceted debate emerges, in which the experiences of historians and editors of medieval sources are intertwined with those of archivists and librarians, to face the incessant transformation of Information Technology, from the first “Read-Only” Web to the Web 2.0, from the Semantic Web to the challenges posed to historians by research data and Linked Open Data technologies.

For distinct reasons, Romania has not yet been part of the international effort to exploit me- dieval curial sources, preserved either in the Vatican and Roman Archives, or in domestic col- lections. Nowadays, however, this view is beginning to change. An increased interest in these remarkable documentary texts has been encouraged and facilitated primarily by multiple ini- tiatives that intend to bring papal or curial documents from regional repositories closer to re- searchers in the form of digital data. In a very short time, international, national, or institu- tional projects providing data bases and/or collections of digital images of medieval sources have become indispensable research tools. Transylvania, in particular, once a province of the Kingdom of Hungary and thus part of the medieval Latin world, benefits significantly from this wave of computer supported and controlled endeavours (both old and more recent). The in- tention of my presentation is to discuss how medieval studies from Transylvania (traditionally a multilingual and international research environment) employ this new technological com- pound, examine the limitations of each distinctive project, and finally consider possible steps for further expansion and improvement.

The Liv-, Est- und Kurlandische Urkundenbuch (LUB) is a basic collection of sources for re- searchers of medieval Livonia. It was Georg Friedrich von Bunge who began working on the edition in the first half of the nineteenth century; the Freie Universitat Berlin is currently pro- moting an initiative to close the gap between series I and II of the LUB. The Repertorium Ger- manicum is of great importance as it facilitates an efficient research for relevant sources in the Vatican Archives. The LUB is to be published as a hybrid edition (in print as well as digital).

ENGLISH: Thanks to a particularly fortunate situation in terms of documentary preservation (as concerns both the antiquity and the amount of available material), Liguria’s two chief cities, Genoa and Savona, are an exceptional starting point for an attempt at establishing the actual income of a medieval notary. The research has been conducted on the fragments, both edited and unpublished, of registers belonging to 24 notaries, beginning from the oldest surviving cartulary (of Giovanni scriba, 1154) up to those dating from the first quarter of the thirteenth century. By collecting references to fees paid for different types of contracts it has been possible to reconstruct a draft of a “price list”. This draft has been used as a basis to calculate an approximate income. A comparison of this data with the “cost of living” during this period allows to evaluate the economic status of this professional category, the way notaries invested their incomes, and their social status.

ENGLISH: Over the last few decades, German and Italian scholarships in the field of medieval constitutional history widened their traditional differences in research approach, as the studies on royal rulership (Konigsherrschaft) in the tenth and early eleventh centuries seem to reveal. These studies define the subject of this article, which aims at raising awareness of the need to once again increase German-Italian cooperation. In this respect, the present essay briefly deals with selected issues and problems that are differently tackled by German and Italian scholarly traditions, and subsequently outlines four promising research paths for investigating royal rulership and kingship in the tenth and early eleventh centuries by means of an in-depth exchange between the two historiographies. These four new proposals concern macro-themes such as space, time, power-sharing practices, and the circulation of political models by making use of hostages. .

The question of restitution highlights the longstanding encounter between the languages of theology and canon law, and financial and mercantile practices. Within this framework, the consolidation of evaluation mechanisms during the thirteenth century appears crucial. By establishing the (permeable and uncertain) limits of licit economic behaviours, these mechanisms also charted the (equally negotiable) boundaries of civic belonging. This evaluation function, based on specific commercial and credit competences, can be fitted within the constant process that redefined the social and ethical “equilibria”, in strict connection with the peculiar systems of political and economic relations.

The only extant copy of the 1395 Constitutions of the Faculty of Law of the University of Pavia has come down to us through a fifteenth-century manuscript kept in Basel. This article tackles facts and reasons leading to the commissioning of this manuscript in the context of the refoundation and early development of the University of Basel (1460). Basel adopted constitutions and organization models peculiar to Pavia and other universities in order to imitate “ritum et stilum vniversitatum Ytalie”. Champions of a successful recruiting policy, jurists from Pavia employed by the University of Basel transferred books and knowledge, their experience contributing to the lively debates revolving around the rising Faculty of Law. The active transfer of institutional models, books and lecturers from Pavia and Turin, is a tile of the cultural and “geopolitical” mosaic of the post-conciliar period that still needs to be explored from multiple angles.
