What remains of the Soviet identity for those who grew up in an empire that started in the Baltic sea and ended in Kamchatka? What kind of post-Soviet cultural combos have been produced afterwards? Was it bizarre to listen to Led Zeppelin and Nirvana while being targeted with nuclear missiles from the West? In a retrospective way and engaging with the collective memory of his home country, Estonia, the author reflects on different narratives of Europeanisation, shame and peripherality and the way local people embodied them.

This article discusses the impact of skin colour inequality in the individual aspirations and prospects of social inclusion and success, social mobility aspirations, professional ambitions and career opportunities. Ethnographically, it studies specific forms of cosmetic investments and self-optimisation in Portugal and its effects on the micropolitics of bodies, correlating the agency of individuals (how they empower themselves maximising certain aspects and minimising others) with the ways in which a European white appearance circulates as a form of capital and commodity, creating body narratives that are very much racialised. By inquiring the actual European understanding of value in bodies, we can also understand the colonial legacy and how it is reproduced through the mutation of bodies.

This is a brief reflection on the consequences of the commodification of dance cultures from the former colonised world and the ways they are consumed in Europe. Inspired from ten years of fieldwork, the ethnic structuring of postcolonial dance floors in European cities proves an empirical basis to start this line of thought. Instead of promoting respect and interest in the dance forms and the cultural contexts in which these dance forms developed, aficionados tend to consider that these are less evolved, beautiful and interesting than the appropriations they develop in their home countries. As a result, commodification leads to reinforcing previous stereotypes and emic hierarchies of value. The kinetic metaphor of the bodies that scream but cannot listen structures the text and its arguments.

Women’s Uprising in Poland

In 2016 a legislative proposal introducing an abortion ban resulted in female mass mobilisations. The protests went along with frequent claims of Polish as well as European belonging. Next to this, creative appropriations of patriotic symbols related to national movements, fights and uprisings for independence and their transformation into a sign of female bodily sovereignty could be observed all over the country. The appearance of bodies needs to be looked at in relation to the concrete political context and conditions in which bodies materialise (Butler 2015). Bodies are in this sense always relational, but they also depend. The article argues that the constitution of ‘European bodies’ can serve to empower people exposed to and oppressed by nationalist biopolitics. In such cases a ‘European body’ might be constituted in distinction to the nation/nationalism and its claim of ownership on female bodies (the ‘national body’) and by performing multiple belongings extending national belonging.

The success of an academic journal depends on many factors. Let us, however, only mention two of them: its high-quality editing and its continuity. The Anthropological Journal of European Cultures is prosperous because it fulfils both of these criteria. This means it has been published periodically, nonstop for nearly three decades under the supervision of editors with significant dedication to the journal.

The article studies the emergence of the transgender phenomenon within LGB activism in contemporary Ukraine in relation to an ongoing geopolitical process of Europeanisation, which involves negotiations over the country’s belonging to Europe. The article is based on PhD research (2013–2018) and has borrowed from governmentality studies and also from literature about the Europeanisation process. It pays particular attention to the instrumentalisation of sexual diversity and the transfer of ideas from Western to Eastern Europe. Using data from field research, the article brings to light the discrepancies between the globalised frameworks for LGBT activism and localisedmeanings and practices.

‘Fight Abortion, Not Women’ “反对堕胎,而不是反对妇女”

This article traces the conceptual emergence and development offeminist-oriented abortion politics in urban Russia between 2011and 2015. Examined as an example of local adaptions of globalreproductive rights movements, Russians’ advocacy for abortionaccess reflects commitments and tensions characterising post-Sovietfeminism. Specifically, I show how calls to preserve women’s accessto legal abortion have drawn on both socialist-inspired ideals of statesupport for families and liberal-oriented ideas of individual autonomy.Attention to the logics underlying abortion activists’ rhetoricreveals the specific historical sensibilities and shifting cultural valuesat stake in the ways progressive Russian activists construe justice. The analytic concept of ‘moral economy’ brings into relief how theiradvocacy evokes ideal visions of reciprocal obligations and uncertaintiesin both state-citizen relations and intimate relations. I arguethat contextualised analyses of local feminist abortion politics mayenrich global debates for reproductive rights and justice.

How are politics generated by grief actually lived, and how do theyendure? By exploring long-term repercussions of Europe’s lethalborders, I show what shape shared grief takes in the minute encountersbetween ‘ordinary people’ across borders and how alternativepolitics are lived as a vivid critique of the moral economy of the EUborder regime. Therefore, I explore intimate uncertainties that ariseboth in the confrontation with death and in the unexpected affectionbetween strangers. The analysis of a single shipwreck in 2003indicates the need for more ethnographically nuanced, historicallyinformed and translocal approaches to death during migration inanthropology.

This article explores how the notion of happiness is employed inorder to obscure the moral ambiguity and intimate uncertainties ofcommercial surrogacy. My ethnographic data elucidate the ways inwhich surrogacy agents and other intermediaries operating in Russiaand Ukraine evoke happiness. I discuss three forms of their affectivelabour: a discourse of fear and hope, the attempt to make surrogacya joyous and happy process and the claim that there is a right to happiness.I contend that ‘happiness’ serves as the ultimate argument,an argument that has the affective power to override moral concernsand delegitimise critique.

The Relational Ethics of ‘Never . . .
IF 0.4 Q1 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2018-09-01 DOI: 10.3167/AJEC.2018.270207
J. Tosic
This article explores how a specific pattern of relational ethics– referred to as ‘never . . . too much’ – figures as a way of copingwith intimate uncertainties in close relationships. The concept ofrelational ethics refers to the historically embedded ways in whichpeople live and cultivate ethical values through relations and, assuch, also represents an ethnographically grounded conceptual contributionto ongoing anthropological debates on moral economy. Myresearch unfolds ethnographic insights into three variations of therelational ethics of ‘never . . . too much’, three respective sets of socialactors and relational scales: ‘never feel too much’/local women andtheir relationship to their marital partner; ‘never own too much’/localmen and their relationship to property; ‘never settle too much’/femalemigrants from Russia and their relationship to the place of settlement. The article’s analysis is developed against the background ofa particular spatial and temporal location – a border minority townwith a history of (forced) migration, and is a contemporary focalpoint of migration, marginalisation by the state and patriarchy.
