Only a few years ago, a copy of the Middle Low German translation of the first german report on Brazil was found in the collection of the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp. The focus of this study is on the function of the text printed by Joachim Löw in Hamburg in 1564 and the extent to which it, as well as the Middle Dutch translations printed at the same time in Amsterdam and Antwerp, are related to the geographic, cartographic and nautical use of the seafaring cities in the 16th century.

The contribution ties in with Joachim Bumke’s research on the ‘Nibelungenklage’. It attempts to make plausible that the ‘Nibelungenlied’ and the ‘Nibelungenklage’ were written as a genuine composite text (‘Nibelungenbuch’) within the framework of a project with which Bishop Wolfger of Passau wanted to provide his diocese with a prestigious heredity. The contribution also examines the significance of orality and writing in the initial phase of transmission.

The term mixtûre, adopted from the Latin mixtura and used to describe Petitcreiu’s blend of colours, provides a key to the lovers’ interpretative engagement with this enigmatic dog. If the dog is also understood as an allegory for the poem, mixtûre is to be related to medieval music theory and to the concepts of harmony and order which are an essential part of Gottfried’s poetics.
