Improved current-temperature-density (C-T-D) sondes for oceanographic measurements are described. The sensors all have a very short time constant. For T, the time constant is 0.5 ms, the accuracy is 0.3 mK, and the resolution is 0.12 mK, and the measurements can all be repeated in 2-ms periods. The spatial resolution for C is 0.5 cm, the precision 0.001, and the resolution 0.0005. At present, the pressure sensor can reach a precision of about +or-1.5 m between 0-600 bar with a resolution of +or-30 cm.<>

The application of linear programming to the problem of designing an environmental observing network consisting of multiple sensor and platform systems in light of budget and other limitations is documented. A numerical model for the optimization of the network is described, and its strengths and limitations are discussed. A case study is described and evaluated. The value of the planner of the model and its output is assessed.<>

Micro-computer based design of recirculating systems for the production of soft-shell blue crabs (callinectes sapidus) 基于微机的蓝蟹生产循环系统设计

Use of recirculating shedding systems in the soft-shell blue crab industry continues to increase as the capabilities of existing in-shore production facilities expand. Water treatment capabilities based on fluidized bed and upflow sand filters are used to support growth of desirable waste-consuming bacteria and to remove solids. A microcomputer program has been written to assist crab fishermen with sizing filters, reducing flow requirements, and selecting pumps. The distribution of the software is expected to accelerate the adoption of filter technology and strengthen the blue crab shedding industry.<>

Underway marine geophysical data (navigation, depth, Sea Beam, magnetics and gravity) collected on Scripps cruises are processed and displayed at sea or on shore on Vax computers under the Unix BSD 4.3 operating system. An online master abstracts file allows users to search a database containing more than 1300 cruise legs from Scripps and other sources by geographic region or data type. A description is given of data management under Unix, single-cruise-leg processing, multicruise data management, Sea Beam data processing and archiving, and plotting displays.<>

Steadfast Oceaneering, Inc. recently performed a successful search operation for a South African Airways 747 aircraft that had crashed in the Indian Ocean. Using a special deep ocean sonar system, the Steadfast search team located the aircraft in less than 14 hours of sonar search in water depths of over 4400 meters. Steadfast is the prime contractor for search operations for the U.S. Navy's Supervisor of Salvage office. The tiny island of Mauritius served as the base of operations for mobilization and deployment o f all search assets. This is believed to be the deepest successful search operation on record-deeper even than the TITANIC operation of 1986.

Accumulation and fate of tributyltin species in microbial biofilms 三丁基锡在微生物生物膜中的积累和命运

Microbial biofilms, composed of microorganisms originally obtained from estuarine harbor-exposed commercial organotin-painted panels, accumulated tributyltin (TBT) spiked into estuarine water. Algal or bacterial-dominated biofilms were grown by varying nutrient conditions. Both types of microbial communities accumulated TBT in excess of 300 ng/mg biomass (dry weight basis) from estuarine water solutions containing 50 ,ug/L TBT, corresponding to bioconcentration factors of over 7000. No degradation of TBT to dibutyltin (DBT) species was detected, either in the biofilm material or in the surrounding solution. Thus, the microbial biofilms concentrated but did not degrade TBT. These results suggest that microbial films on TBT-painted structures in marine environments concentrate TBT at materials surfaces, thereby acting as "capacitors". Such effects might make practical the use of paints with extremely low TBT release rates delivering antifouling service with reduced environmental hazard.

-In-situ video-sediment-profile camera (VSPC) images will be displayed , llcapturedll using a combination of manned submersible sampling techniques, and innovative chargecoupled-display technology. These live images provide an intimate perspective of benthic sedimentary structures, processes, and dynamics from two very different benthic regimes. Imagery from 350m in the Caribou Island Basin of Lake Superior (1986 dives) will be compared to that from 750m depths on the upper continental slope off southern New England. Details of the mesotopographic relief (mms-cms) at the sediment-water interface (SWI), epiand infaunal organisms, their densities and spatial distributions may be addressed through this technique. Megabenthic burrow structures were easily identified from the sub, and the physical and biogenic sedimentary microstratigraphy were then examined in detail with the VSPC system down to 15-20cm within the sediments.

The depth capability of the entire Gemini ROV (remotely operated vehicle) system has been upgraded for 10000 feet, bringing the Gemini into the vanguard of deep-ocean commercial ROV systems. The Gemini development used advanced submersible-technology designs, including a fiber-optic umbilical cable, dual spatially correspondent heave-duty manipulators, and an air-transportable aluminium handling system. The authors describe the engineering development and systems integration. Specific areas of discussion include telemetry system design and integration for this great depth, cable design, power system engineering, vehicle sensor and manipulators/tools specification and integration, and handling system design. The depth capability of the entire Gemini ROV (remotely operated vehicle) system has been upgraded for 10000 feet, bringing the Gemini into the vanguard of deep-ocean commercial ROV systems. The Gemini development used advanced submersible-technology designs, including a fiber-optic umbilical cable, dual spatially correspondent heave-duty manipulators, and an air-transportable aluminium handling system. The authors describe the engineering development and systems integration. Specific areas of discussion include telemetry system design and integration for this great depth, cable design, power system engineering, vehicle sensor and manipulators/tools specification and integration, and handling system design.
