Based on the well-known discrete definitions we introduce a continuous framework for percentile rank scores and integrated impact indicators (I3). This is done by taking the integral of a scoring function multiplied by a distribution function. Examples are provided by considering several distribution functions and two scoring functions, where the distribution function can take any form and the scoring function is non-decreasing.

With experience as a librarian, adjunct professor and Internet trainer, and as a leading authority on Internet searching, Randolph Hock is well qualified as author of the Extreme Searcher’s Internet Handbook, now in its fourth edition. My interest in reviewing this book was that of a MLIS instructor revising a course in expert searching for clients, as well as that of an information-services manager expanding an information search policy into a search standard of practice. For both of these activities, I needed a current overview of the Internet generally and an update on searching social media, open access and grey literature, and content relevant to Canadian contexts. This book focuses on searching the Internet and complements Suzanne Bell’s Librarian’s Guide to Online Searching, third edition (2012), which focuses on databases. Extreme Searcher’s layout will be familiar to readers of the third edition, as it has evolved slightly from the first two editions. Each of the 10 chapters addresses a broad topic with background information, resource guides in the form of collections of links to “metasites” (major sites), and sites chosen for high value or as typical of their topic. The chapters emphasize Internet content and structure and are rich in detail, and thus of great value to search instructors as few of us know the scope of the Internet as well as the author does. In chapter 1, I marked as course content or readings the following: the Web versus the Internet (p. 1), the Internet timeline (p. 3–6), the Deep Web (p. 23–25) and content evaluation criteria (p. 18–21). This book will also benefit an independent information professional offering expert search services. This book does not claim to be a source for Canadian content; there are few Canadian sources described and included in the URL list (p. 279–96) or on the book’s accompanying Web page (http://www.extremesearcher.com/handbook links.html). However, this is not a deterrent for Canadian readers; discussion of Internet history and Web features is universally relevant. Instructors and others who specifically want to identify Canadian sources can use details of the sites given to help them search for Canadian counterparts. The book met my needs as an LIS instructor and department manager generally and with respect to searching for social media.

More references would help course instructors who will want to compare this book’s concepts and approaches—for example steps in a search (p. 15–17)—with those in other leading works. This book will contribute to the search success of Internet users at any level. It will be of interest to LIS students, independent information professionals, and others developing search expertise. With its regular updating and revision, Randolph Hock’s Extreme Searcher’s Internet Handbook stands alone as the essential work for Internet users and expert searchers.

Public libraries play an important role in the provision of free, interactive, community-based learning opportunities that build the capacity of parents/care-givers to support the development of their children’s early literacy skills. Despite public library practice of delivering early literacy programs, questions about program impact on how parents/caregivers support the development of early literacy for their children are largely under-researched in library and evaluation literature. This article presents the research design, analysis, and results of a quasi-experimental approach to evaluating the Regina Public Library’s Mainly Mother Goose program for children under 24 months and their parents/caregivers. Key lessons about the research approach are discussed and future research directions for early literacy programs in public libraries are identified.

This study reports a survey of information literacy instruction practices in Canadian academic libraries. Results indicate that formal instruction is offered by 89% of respondents, a minority of which articulate formal instructional objectives or work in libraries with full-time instructional librarians. Evaluation is mostly informal. Teaching students to find information is the highest priority of instruction, and database instruction is given the strongest focus. Changes in information technology continue to influence instructional content and delivery. Instructional work receives less support than previously, and complex relationships with teaching faculty continue to challenge librarian instructors. Trends are consistent with national surveys conducted globally.

The objective of this paper is to report on a comparative user evaluation of two multilingual thesaurus-enhanced visual user interfaces—namely, T-saurus and Searchling, designed and developed for digital libraries. The study used 25 academic users carrying out three search tasks on both user interfaces. It applied usability and affordance strength questionnaires, interviews, think-alouds, and direct observation to investigate users’ evaluation of the key components of both user interfaces—namely, multilingual features, thesaurus and search functions, and visualization and visual appeal. Results of the study show that users were able to successfully carry out the search tasks using thesaurus-enhanced search interfaces. However, they preferred Searchling, a faceted search user interface, for its flexible language option, thesaurus browsing, and visualization. Users preferred the interface to show the thesaural relationships along with the selected term without interacting with the interface. The empirical data gathered and the design ideas implemented within the two user interfaces will be useful for designers of search interfaces that make use of thesaurus and multilingual features. The design and methodological framework of the developed user interfaces and the study could be used to create more information-rich multilingual academic search user interfaces for teaching and learning purposes. The design and representation of thesaural terms and structures in these two interfaces are designed using novel visualization techniques.
