abstract:This article focuses on Christoph Schlingensief's Wagner-Rallye (2004), a work described as a counterpart to his staging of Wagner's Parsifal in Bayreuth. Inspired by Kluge's short story "Götterdämmerung in Wien," the Rallye radically reworks Wagner's Gesamtkunstwerk concept by dispersing the sound of his operas in the public space. With Rancière, I describe the becoming-material of Wagner as "aesthetics of the torso" and discuss its emancipatory potential while simultaneously examining it withing the specific context of the Ruhrfestspiele; a festival founded as counterpart to established cultural institutions in an attempt to bring culture to the working class.

abstract:As a form of documentary literature, Feridun Zaimoglu's and Günter Senkel's Schwarze Jungfrauen introduces perspectives from Muslim German women who do not otherwise appear in the public sphere. In doing so, the text affects the public representation of German identity and challenges readers to evaluate the differences in ideology and perspective that are represented. Rather than simply acknowledging the diversity and agency of these women, the preservation of liberal values requires a differentiation between the forms of conservatism that are compatible with such values and the extremist positions that threaten them.

bution perspicaciously argues for the importance of thinking through philosophical and literary developments from the standpoint of machines and technology, which he argues determine both diegetic and extra-diegetic elements of works of literature. In doing so he sheds an illuminating media theoretical light on the philosophical stakes of Wilhelm Meister. Overall, the volume is accessible despite what may be treated as dense subject matter, and it executes very well what the editors promise in the introduction. Each contribution reflects in different ways, implicitly or explicitly, on the tension between the particularity of Wilhelm himself and the universal lessons, concepts, and practices this particularity offers. The volume makes for an excellent contribution to the disciplines of philosophy and literary studies, with Müller-Sievers’ contribution expanding its reach to media studies, and would also be a very useful accompaniment to courses on Goethe and German literature.
