On the use of metaphors in designing educational interfaces 论隐喻在教育界面设计中的运用

Metaphors are present in a wide range of everyday activities. They usually work by understanding or explaining complex subjects by terms from more familiar domains. Metaphors in everyday context are often used unconsciously, as their sources are basic entities and perceptual experiences. They can, however, be used deliberately in educational discourse to explain difficult concepts and introduce new ideas in an intelligible manner. This approach falls under constructivism, which claims that an effective learning strategy is to scaffold on the previous knowledge and conceptual representations. However, there are some limitations of introducing a new concept indirectly via a metaphor. We consider these issues here in the domains of physics education, human-computer interfaces and human-robot interactions. We argue that metaphors are most effective for novices, when one needs to grasp a general idea about a concept and understand its functions without a detailed analysis. In this respect, metaphor can be a powerful tool for bridging gaps in understanding between familiar terms and abstract ideas that are yet to be learned.

Multipath strategies and solutions in multihomed mobile environments 多用户移动环境中的多路径策略和解决方案

Cognitive infocommunications research has been on the rise in recent years and it is becoming more and more prevalent. The underlying network infrastructure needs to be able to satisfy the new requirements set forth by these systems that also include 3D video and audio delivery. Now more than ever, it is also inevitable to take mobile devices into consideration when talking about the development and use cases of new technologies. These also need to be prepared to provide an experience as seamless as possible. This means utilizing the available network resources with a high efficiency both in mobile and desktop environments. In our paper we briefly summarize the solutions available today for using multiple network interfaces simultaneously, providing throughput aggregation and failover capabilities. We discuss a couple of already implemented multi-interface mobile environments, their operating principles, their advantages and drawbacks. We review the difficulties of operating multiple interfaces in a mobile environment, and the solutions provided in different implementations. We present our own results in the topic, achieved with the MPT Library developed at the University of Debrecen, Faculty of Informatics. We also touch on the software's Android implementation, describe the differences to other implementations and examine possibilities for further development.

Can we detect speakers' empathy?: A real-life case study 我们能检测说话者的同理心吗?现实生活中的案例研究

In the context of automatic behavioral analysis, we aim to classify empathy in human-human spoken conversations. Empathy underlies to the human ability to recognize, understand and to react to emotions, attitudes, and beliefs of others. While empathy and its different manifestations (e.g., sympathy, compassion) have been widely studied in psychology, very little has been done in the computational research literature. In this paper, we present a case study where we investigate the occurrences of empathy in call-centers human-human conversations. In order to propose an operational definition of empathy, we adopt the modal model of emotions, where the appraisal processes of the unfolding of emotional states are modeled sequentially. We have designed a binary classification system to detect the presence of empathic manifestations in spoken conversations. The automatic classification system has been evaluated using spoken conversations by exploiting and comparing performances of the lexical, acoustic and psycholinguistic features.

Topical unit classification using deep neural nets and probabilistic sampling 基于深度神经网络和概率抽样的局部单元分类

Understanding topical units is important for improved human-computer interaction (HCI) as well as for a better understanding of human-human interaction. Here, we take the first steps towards topical unit recognition by creating a topical unit classifier based on the HuComTech multimodal database. We create this classifier by means of Deep Rectifier Neural Nets (DRN) and the Unweighted Average Recall (UAR) metric, applying the technique of probabilistic sampling. We demonstrate in several experiments that our proposed method attains a convincingly better performance than that using a support vector machine or a deep neural net by itself. We also experiment with the number of topical unit labels, and examine whether distinguishing between different types of topic changes based on the level of motivatedness is feasible in this framework.

Smartphoneless context-aware indoor navigation 无智能手机的环境感知室内导航

Indoor environments like hospitals are typically very complex and hard to navigate even for healthy individuals. Factors like bad health status, higher stress level, and possible impairments can make the orientation in hospitals even more challenging. We describe the evolution of context-sensitive navigation system that provides adaptive indoor navigation without forcing users to use sophisticated smartphones or other specialized personal navigation devices. Instead, various networked navigation terminal installed at appropriate spots in the indoor environment are used to guide users to their destination. User study (N=10) and on-site study in a big hospital have been conducted. Prototypes including hospital visit preparation website, smart kiosk and waiting room kiosk, were developed and evaluated. These prototypes have been evaluated with target user audience, LoFi prototype (N=6) and HiFi prototype (N=12). The results suggest usability and utility of our navigation systems for the target user audience.

There are different theories to estimate cognitive abilities. Gardner proposed a model, where intelligence is defined by multiple fields instead of using one specific number. However, the characterization and automated evaluation of these fields are still open issues. If we can make standalone measurements in separate intelligence fields, the numerical modeling of the competencies is possible. Observing the cognitive abilities of children can lead us to an optimized learning experience in performance and engagement. Our aim is to automatically match problem sets and intelligence fields in order to achieve a faster and deeper learning experience. The amount of data to be collected makes the automation of this process a focus point of these studies. In this paper we present an automatic cognitive profiling system with the help of smart devices and AdaptEd - an adaptive educational gaming framework. Effects of a chance task outcome on the offers in the ultimatum game: The mediation role of emotions 最后通牒博弈中机会任务结果对出价的影响:情绪的中介作用

This study investigated the effect of a chance task outcome on the offers made at the Ultimatum Game (UG). In addition, the putative mediation role of incidental (unrelated to UG) and integral (elicited by UG) emotions and beliefs was examined. The incidental emotions were induced by manipulating the task outcome in a positive or negative direction. As concerns integral emotions and beliefs, we took into account those supposed to underlie the offers amount, such as empathy, sense of fairness, fear of rejection etc. Results showed that a negative outcome led proposers to decrease the offers amount and that this effect was mediated by integral emotions and beliefs. Instead, positive incidental emotions produced suppression effects.
