Library savings through student labor 通过学生劳动节省图书馆费用
IF 4.1 Q1 INFORMATION SCIENCE & LIBRARY SCIENCE Pub Date : 2015-08-26 DOI: 10.1108/BL-05-2015-0006
T. Cottrell, B. Bell
Purpose – The purpose of this article is to briefly present current research and insight into the subject of student labor as a sharp cost-saving measure in the management of today’s library personnel budgets. Design/methodology/approach – Drawing from a recent empirical study on the subject, this article adds commentary from other researchers on the pitfalls and benefits of student library labor versus paraprofessionals and librarians. Findings – Although library student workers are commonly not seen as “ideal” employees, their demonstrated performance on many library tasks is compelling enough to consider hiring more of them in place of existing staff. Originality/value – This subject can be provocative for managers to simply mention to their staff or professional colleagues. There is little research in this area, and this article helps to broach the subject in a candid manor to spark more discussion among library staff looking to improve their bottom line.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Libraries’ experience and success in the creation of a fundraising Communications Plan. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on observational experiences at EKU Libraries over the course of two years, before and after the implementation of a Communications Plan. Findings – Feedback from Friends of EKU Libraries advised that donors appreciate communications from EKU Libraries, especially on a monthly basis. As a result of implementing a Communications Plan, donations to EKU Libraries became more consistent throughout the year and increased in number. Practical implications – EKU Libraries found that a meaningful Communications Plan can help strengthen the connection between an organization and its donors. As a result, the Plan will be refined annually and utilized for the foreseeable future. Originality/value – This paper provides guidance for libraries and other organizations on the creation and implementation of a fundraising Communications Plan, based on the experience of EKU Libraries.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare the traditional librarian positions with intelligence analyst positions. Design/methodology/approach – Opinion. Findings – Similarities outnumber differences, and borrowing vocabulary and skills could benefit both, especially regarding long-term planning and spending in academic libraries. Research limitations/implications – Comparing salaries, management structure and possibilities for advancement would be interesting points of study. Originality/value – A literature search for comparing librarians with intelligence analysts revealed, in part, a 2013 lecture at the annual Special Libraries Association conference by Edna Reid, and a 2012 article from the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science on incorporating aspects of intelligence analysis into library school curricula.

Purpose – The purpose of this column is to explain the importance of succession planning. Departures of retiring employees and colleagues moving to another workplace can have significant consequences on the organization. A well-designed and coordinated succession plan that is integrated with leadership development can enable the library administrator to avoid reliance on a replacement process that is narrowly focused on finding a new version of the departed colleague. Selecting the most qualified and well-prepared candidate for a leadership position is a critical decision because of its paramount impact on current and future activities. The library or information center benefits when transitions and professional development become opportunities to embed succession planning into the organizational culture. Design/methodology/approach – The column is an opinion piece based on literature review. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to consider the changes that have taken place in Interlending & Document Supply over the past 12 years. Design/methodology/approach – Research of the past 48 literature reviews published in Interlending & Document Supply. Findings – Over the past 12 years, Interlending & Document Supply has declined dramatically in much of the world, although less so in the US. It is likely to increase in the developing world but not as much as to compensate for the decline elsewhere. Originality/value – This is the only study that has been made of the changes in document supply in this century.

An economic case for a UK collective collection 英国实行集体征税的经济理由

Purpose – This paper is a thought experiment that investigates the possibilities of moving from the typical “just-in-case” model of managing legacy collections of printed monographs to a centralised “just-in-time” model. Design/methodology/approach – Reliable published statistical data have been used; the core of these are the annual library statistics for UK research libraries collected by SCONUL. From these and other sources, the costs of monograph storage across UK research libraries have been determined. Findings – Establishing a centralised collective collection would bring a large return on investment. Research limitations/implications – This is not an empirical study. Originality/value – The value of this study is high.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between different aspects of public library use with elements of economic growth and development. Design/methodology/approach – Statistical correlations were performed to uncover statistically significant relationships. Findings – Relationships are not uniform: strongly positive relationships exist between education and visits, circulation and library programmes, savings and visits and circulation and programmes, and a strongly negative relationship exists between health and circulation. Research limitations/implications – Only one proxy variable for each of the economic development indicators was used, including the fact that others might have revealed other information. Social implications – The revealed relationships should be kept in mind by librarians and policymakers as decisions to change library services that might trickle down to citizens through economic growth and development. Originality/value – This paper brings together a var...
