ABSTRACT:Toxins lurk in the soy fields around a small Argentine town in Samanta Schweblin’s 2014 novel Distancia de rescate. On the surface, Schweblin’s novel appears to use supernatural phenomena to criticize industrial soy production and its use of toxic herbicides. Current criticism, in turn, sees the novel as an extension of the Latin American fantastic, filtered through an ecocritical or Anthropocene lens. However, I argue that Schweblin’s novel, read alongside her short story “Conservas,” portrays a more complex relationship between flesh and the environment. Drawing on the ideas of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, I argue that the chiasm, or crossing over, of flesh mimics the structure of transgenic organisms so that the characters resemble genetically modified soy. I show how Schweblin portrays flesh as reversible, interconnected, and increasingly intoxicated. Following Julia Kristeva and Jacques Derrida, she uses an abject counteraesthetic to blend nature and artifice and to question traditional distinctions between human and environment, subject and object that emerge from Kantian philosophy and continue into the aesthetic tradition of the sublime. In their place, Schweblin suggests an already intoxicated flesh that forms the basis of the categories of subject and object and an abject, toxic sublime, present in flesh and fiction.

RESUMEN:La obra novelística de Emilia Pardo Bazán nos permite un acercamiento a la relación de la sociedad decimonónica con la muerte y a algunos cambios paulatinos que esta experimentó dentro de su representación literaria a lo largo del siglo XIX, cuando se produjo la evolución desde la estética romántica hacia el concepto de “muerte vedada” que se afianzará en el siglo XX.Abstract (Lang: English):Emilia Pardo Bazán’s novel allows us an approach to the relationship of nineteenth-century society with death and the gradual changes that it experienced within its literary representation throughout the nineteenth century, when an evolution of death-writing developed into the concept of “forbidden death” that would become established during the 20th century.

Abstract (Lang: English):This essay examines two understudied documents from eighteenth-century Lima: the 1715 and 1716 Oraciones delivered by Pedro de Peralta Barnuevo about his rectorship at San Marcos University. In their construction, both speeches capture colonial bureaucratism, transatlantic self-imagination, and baroque academicism at a mature stage in the development of colonial criollo identity. I examine these dynamics through the analysis of three rhetorical gestures: the use of classical panegyrists to establish critical similarities and differences between ancient academic institutions and San Marcos, the strategic manipulation of Latin citations, and the characterization of the history of San Marcos as a new yet deep archive. Through these strategies, I propose, Peralta suggests two different types of past: a “classical” antiquity rooted in Rome, and an “archival” antiquity that belongs to Lima. The coordination of these two pasts dramatizes the positioning of the criollo intellectual community in the transatlantic Republic of Letters.

Abstract (Lang: English):This article examines the politics and erotics of Catalan nationalism in the 2004 novel Lluny de l’horitzó perfumat (Far from the Perfumed Horizon), written in Catalan by the Palestinian-Catalan writer Salah Jamal and set in Barcelona during the Transition to Democracy. The article argues that the narrator’s ability to “pass”—across ethnoracial, religious, linguistic, socioeconomic, and political lines—is not only an individual’s tactic for securing social mobility, but also a gauge of shifting national narratives in the Transition. The article shows how socioeconomic class played into racial constructs that, in turn, supported the nationalist reimagining of Catalonia as a space apart during the Transition. By way of conclusion, the article proposes one of the novel’s many satirical monikers, “Moroland,” as a keyword for conceptualizing Catalonia as a transnational space of passing. “Moroland” offers a theory for rethinking Transition-era Catalonia in terms of the instability and performativity of identity.

Abstract (Lang: English):This article proposes a comparative analysis of the novels Montaña adentro, by Marta Brunet, and O Quinze, by Rachel de Queiroz, with emphasis on the presentation of a difficult nature and eccentric and rural territories, linked to the main female characters. Abstract (Lang: English):From the middle of the 15th century, various literary groups, collectively called "literary academies," appeared in Spain, due to the growing interest in the argumentative text preceding the literary debate that most of them generated. This work aims to study the “Discurso en alabanza a las mujeres” (“Speech in praise of women,” read during the forty-eighth session), presented in one of the most important Valencian groups of the late sixteenth century, the Academia de los Nocturnos de Valencia (1591–1594). It is a brief plea, riddled with classical references, that sought to offer enough arguments for the very likely heated debate that followed. This singular discourse sought to enter—very timidly—in the still-dark territory of the defense of women as an intellectual and literary concept.

Abstract (Lang: English):The lives that inhabit Roberto Bolaño's fiction serve as a contestation to the tenets of the Enlightenment. In this respect, water plays a key role in the author's poetics: a metaphor for defeat and madness which both reflects and muddies the horrors of Reason. By examining Bolaño's ability to create complex fictional biographies, this article identifies how these characters’ encounters with watery metaphors reveal the depths of Bolaño’s critique of the Enlightenment belief in an all-knowing and all-seeing Reason. To achieve our goal, we explore the lives of characters from four of his novels: 2666, Monsieur Pain, Amulet, and By Night in Chile. This article demonstrates how Bolaño conceives characters who are asked to take a stand in a world of diminishing certainties and changing tides. In doing so, he superimposes characters with minimal variations on the same backdrop of an ethically compromised world, like a scientist trying to pinpoint the exact moment that got us to where we now are.
