This paper proposes teaching strategies and techniques for library instruction in academic libraries to achieve the intended goals. The recommendations are based on insights from previous research in library instruction with the intention to identify possible strategies and techniques for different user groups. This study applied a systematic literature review method, using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) protocol to examine the use of teaching strategies and techniques in library instruction programs. The Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases were searched for relevant literature using specific keywords. Applying the inclusion criteria, a total of 27 articles out of the 1380 documents extracted, were deemed relevant to the study. The results show that library instruction is usually conducted in the form of individual sessions. Teaching strategies used by librarians include flipped classroom, faux flip, classroom teaching, research clinic, consultation, asynchronous learning, and online synchronous learning, among others. These teaching strategies improved engagement and relationships between students and librarians, while impacting critical thinking, confidence and self-directed learning. It is concluded that librarians should consider adopting and combining teaching strategies based on individual needs and use technology to improve teaching effectiveness and increase student learning. This study shows that most studies on library instruction have only partially addressed instructional strategies. A critical review of the literature revealed that a strategic shift in the management of library instruction is necessary to achieve the intended outcomes. In this study, three teaching strategies for library education are proposed, namely Embracing for freshman, Encouraging for sophomore, and Leveraging for postgraduates.

The study aims to investigate the number of journals de-indexed by Scopus during the last two decades, specifically, from 2000 through 2019. Data for the study were retrieved from SCImago, a Scopus database. The scope of the study is global, covering all the 27 major subject disciplines categorized in Scopus. A total of 6059 research journals were found to be de-indexed from Scopus up until 2019, accounting for 18.61 percent of the total journals indexed in Scopus till date. Among the total de-indexed journals, 2311 (38.14%) journals were de-indexed from the period between 2000 and 2019. A steady decline in the de-indexing of journals has been observed after the year 2010. Among the top 20 countries with the highest number of de-indexed journals, it was found that 90.11 percent of journals have been de-indexed from these countries altogether. The United States stands out as the leading country, contributing to nearly one-third of the total de-indexed journals worldwide, with Medicine (44%) being the leading subject area in the de-indexed journals. On a national level, Sweden takes the lead, recording the highest de-indexing rate of 40.70 percent of journals. Following standard publishing parameters in publishing research results is of utmost importance for several reasons, with the primary one being dissemination of genuine and authentic research for the larger benefit of society. Any compromise with the quality of published research must be addressed seriously, and if necessary de-indexing a journal as a punitive measure should be considered appropriate and welcomed.

Most of past researches on successful scientist groups focused on the winners of international top-renowned awards. ACM Fellow as an academic honor of Computing Machinery field was rarely investigated. This article focuses on the research of the relationship between Fellows’ success and their co-authorship characteristics with previous Fellows. We selected a list of ACM Advanced Member Grades from 2015 to 2020 in 4 sub-domains as the empirical object, then set relevant indicators to indicate the cooperative relationship to analyze the relationship between their cooperation with previous Fellows and whether they can successfully be awarded as Fellows according to the correlation analysis and binary logistic regression method. The results show that the existence of a cooperative relationship with the previous Fellow is indeed beneficial to the Fellow candidate's selection. The more previous Fellows a candidate works with, the better chance they have of being elected as a Fellow, but the co-growth fellows are the main factor. Moreover, during the cooperation period, the total amount of the candidates’ own publications and the more their own contributions in the cooperation, the more conducive to success. Our results reflect a possible closing of the Fellowship circle, but also correct for biases about honorary award opportunism.

The paper aims to understand the context and drivers of researchers' decision to submit a manuscript to a journal with questionable practices. Using OMICS as a case study and asking authors for their views, the paper presents their profile, motivations and publishing experiences. The methodology is based on a questionnaire sent by e-mail to all authors of articles in journals published by OMICS (+2200). The authors were asked about (a) the factors that influenced their decision to submit their article; (b) their publishing experience with OMICS; (c) their level of satisfaction; and (d) whether or not they would repeat the experience. A total of 86 responses were collected and 18 e-mails were received. The analysis made it possible to add details to the profiles of authors already identified in the literature, but also allowed new and more nuanced profiles. This research extends our knowledge on the phenomenon of predatory publishing from the authors' feedback and provides a better understanding of the socio-economic, psychosocial and geo-political conditions that drive researchers' decisions to submit their work to a possible, potential, or probable predatory journal. At the same time, it reveals some of the strategies used by OMICS to persuade authors to submit their papers. The findings will help to inform institutional policies that seek to put in place efficient measures to combat predatory publishing.

Public libraries reflect the contemporary way of life. In the era of the digital data age, actions carried out through libraries can be traced and analyzed to monitor the demand for library services. This study presents the development and utilization of Korea's National Library Big Data Platform (NLBDP), which was constructed to collect operational data from public libraries in the country and to build national open data platform for the participating libraries and for public use. This study analyzed 17 application cases that utilized NLBDP in order to understand the way the platform has been used. The findings showed that the types of data analyzed so far have been somewhat limited. It suggests needs for further enhancing the data quality and for diversifying data sources, such as individual local library operational data, surveys, demographics, news, and social media. The results also revealed that NLBDP has been utilized for seven distinct purposes: library operations and strategic planning; social trend analysis; collection management; redesigning library space; recruiting new patrons; library marketing; and non-library applications. Building an infrastructure for networked data analysis not only enables evidence-based decision-making in public libraries, but also extracts timely topics that can be developed as useful services for their community. The findings of this study highlighted the necessity to formulate national library data policies and gather data capable of measuring the social impact of libraries.

Information needs and information seeking processes depend on contextual factors. Identifying and paying attention to contextual factors such as work tasks can be helpful for personalization of information retrieval. This study aimed to determine the relationship between work task difficulty and interactive health information searching behaviour (HISB). The study was performed through an analysis of transaction logs to identify relation between the work task difficulty and HISB of postgraduate student health ambassadors (PSHB). Thirty participants were purposefully sampled and invited to complete four simulated work tasks. User perception of work task difficulty, satisfaction, and success of search process were measured using questionnaires. A total of 120 log files were analysed. The results showed that with increasing tasks difficulty, PSHB see more results pages, review more information items and finally save more documents. Also, with increasing difficulty, PSHB enter more and longer queries in information retrieval systems and, in addition to changing the query more, they use more keywords and longer queries to search. As the task difficulty increases, the rate of satisfaction and success, as well as the navigational speed decrease. Understanding how work task attributes affect HISB can be effective for designers of interactive information retrieval systems, and developers of personalized health information retrieval systems and recommendation systems based on contextual information.

Also, with increasing difficulty, PSHB enter more and longer queries in information retrieval systems and, in addition to changing the query more, they use more keywords and longer queries to search. As the task difficulty increases, the rate of satisfaction and success, as well as the navigational speed decrease. Understanding how work task attributes affect HISB can be effective for designers of interactive information retrieval systems, and developers of personalized health information retrieval systems and recommendation systems based on contextual information.","PeriodicalId":45072,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Library & Information Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135527748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An increasing number of academic libraries are providing techno-savvy spaces, generally regarded as makerspace, that plays a significant role to serve the learning needs of university students. Yet, the underutilization of these makerspaces among learners in Nigerian universities is a growing concern. This study suggests a model using the Self-Determination Theory and the Tinkering Learning Dimensions Framework to investigate the influence of intrinsic motivation and learning dimensions (learning engagement and social scaffolding) on the perceived usefulness of library makerspace among Nigerian university students. Using a quantitative approach, four hypotheses were developed to examine the relationship between the constructs. Data from 323 valid respondents were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The findings reveal that intrinsic motivational factors have no direct statistically significant influence on the perceived usefulness of library makerspace. However, the relationship is mediated by an indirect influence of learning engagement. Social scaffolding and learning engagement were both found to have a direct significant influence on the perceived usefulness of makerspace. This study contributes to understanding the factors that influence the perceived usefulness of makerspace which would then lead to the increased use of this collaborative workspace. Contribution to the literature of the utilization of makerspace is discussed based on the presented framework.

This study investigates the quality of metadata records in institutional repositories for Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) in three Malaysian research universities. The study employs metrics derived from Bruce and Hillmann (2004) to evaluate the completeness, accuracy, and consistency of 1138 metadata records from the three institutional repositories, and utilizes quantitative content analysis to identify variants of Dublin Core metadata elements used to describe ETDs. The study uncovers a range of issues with metadata completeness, accuracy, and consistency, emphasizing the need for standardized systems to ensure quality metadata. By highlighting the importance of quality metadata for ETD collections, the study provides valuable insights for academic libraries in designing and describing ETD collections. Overall, this study sheds light on the current metadata practices and elements used in ETD collections, and underscores the significance of effective metadata management for the dissemination and discoverability of scholarly works.

This study examined the types of data that receive formal scholarly credit within and across the science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM) fields. The topics of whether data types are used in a way that encourages data reuse has not been actively studied. This study applied an exploratory method because formal data citation is a relatively new area. The Data Citation Index (DCI) of the Web of Science (WoS) was selected because the DCI provides a single access point to 400 data repositories worldwide across multiple disciplines. Nearly all citations were of quantitative data. The types that received the most credit were, in descending order, ribonucleic acid (RNA), crystal structure, protein sequence data, crystallographic data, Sequence Read Archive (SRA), genomic, images, nucleotide sequencing information, molecular structure, and crystallographic information, though citation was diverse across the various disciplines within these fields. In particular, qualitative data received no scholarly credit. This study contributes to better understanding of data types for data reuse.
